Do you think a lot of people are picking up GTA digitally?
I wouldn't be surprised to see GTA5 the top digital seller on PSN outside of FF7 or something. But we have no sense of scale for these kinds of day-one digital releases -- the industry continues to slit its own wrists keeping that data so close to its chest. It's mind-boggling.

So it seems 3DS lost momentum in the UK. It used to have so many games charting, now I only see Animal Crossing.

During the last three months, 3DS has been the best selling platform in UK, it's possible this didn't happen last month due to GTA5 and PS3 bundles (PS3 was the second best selling console in the last three months as well). However, the lack of important releases for two months is the biggest culript for having such a low amount of software in top 40. Actually, Animal Crossing increased (from 20 to 15) compared to last week, even with FIFA 14 for PS3 and 360 entering the chart, and many 3DS titles saw rises in the Value Chart; probably, the Pokémon 3DS XL had an effect on hardware sales.

Comparison

FIFA 14 (ELECTRONIC ARTS) - 836.000

360 - 509.960
PS3 - 317.680
PC + WII + PSV + 3DS + PSP + PS2 - 8.360

FIFA 13 (ELECTRONIC ARTS) - 1.100.000

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/gamesblog/2012/oct/01/top-20-video-games

360 - 616.000 (56%)
PS3 - 462.000 (42%)
PC + WII + PSV + 3DS + PSP + PS2 - 22.000

France week 38:

1 - GTA V PS3 - Take-Two
2 - GTA V Xbox 360 - Take-Two
3 - Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 PS3 - Konami
4 - GTA V Edition Collector PS3 - Take-Two
5 - GTA V Edition Collector Xbox 360 - Take-Two

They really had a great Q1 line-up. However, since Animal Crossing, 3DS has not received any memorable first-party games, hence the drop :( Though Animal Crossing was successful, I think Nintendo expected more from the title. On a side note, Pokemon is coming :D

I don't get it, are these people trying to catch up or are they just misinformed?

Also Colonial Marines still charting ;_;

Nintendo is basically the only one carrying the thing, so it heavily depends on how much they're able to support it. Since AC there hasn't been too much of note. I guess Pokemon will help in the next month and leading to the holidays. Nintendo really needs to start being more proactive with getting support. Western third party support is beyond terrible.

Pokémon will have a giant impact on 3DS in the next months, get ready :D

Depends if 3DS cats actually want to buy western 3rd party games. I wouldn't have said that was a safe gamble for Nintendo.

Will be interesting to see if it'll have any ripple effect on the other titles that used to chart. But basically no third party support is still terrible because how long can they hold the system on their own?

That's the thing, we barely have any evidence. Though it doesn't surprise me, since, well, even the DS had relatively lacklustre western third party support, but it certainly helped keep the load off Nintendo for a good while when they shifted resources to the Wii.

I don't know for FIFA, but Madden? That's because the game's not that good, again. Not because of next gen incoming.

Yeah I think we see some notable differences between the two:
-FIFA is down 24% while Madden is down 38%.
-Madden came out a few weeks before GTA instead of right after it.
-NCAA was also down which doesn't have a next gen version.
-FIFA comes for free with every pre-ordered Xbox One, giving a lot of people zero incentive to buy it early.

Madden shows a lot more decline in the core product that can't easily be pointed to as a periphery situation.

You mean increasing sales on other titles? I suppose Animal Crossing will be influenced the most among the titles released this year, since it's the most important one so far. Then Luigi's Mansion for sure. I don't know about the rest.

About Pokémon, its effect, coupled with 2DS, will surely last for the next 6 months: Holidays and the first three months of the year, which are always affected by the precedent Q4's momentum (look at how 3DS sales were different between Q1 2012 and Q2 2013, due to the titles released respectively in Q4 2011 and Q4 2012). 2DS could help Pokémon having a pretty long-standing effect (I mean, quite more than the next 6 months), due to its cheap price. And we also have Nintendo saying 2014's first party lineup will still be strong + major Japanese titles being helped overseas by Nintendo itself.

I'm not sure how people can't be surprised by the drop off for GTA. It's numbers last week were monsterous and no way could it keep up that level, but to be honest even with that drop off it's numbers this weeks are still giant and the kind of numbers most publishers dream off for their 1st weeks sales.

The charts would have looked pretty boring for a few months if GTA had been released back in the spring like it was supposed to, there was really nothing released until Last of Us with the kind of sales numbers to take a kick at GTA's dominance at the top.
We're just in crazy season now where spike are gonna happen a lot.

Yeah. Because selling on the back of just one game can't be all that healthy.

As for the 2014 lineup, I dunno, they've played most of their major cards by now. Will be interesting to see what they have.

Because the retail declines dominate the headlines with only vague "digital helps ameliorate the problem" assurances. This batters stocks over and over until they recover a little each quarter when public companies report some growth in digital with hard revenue figures.

So it seems 3DS lost momentum in the UK. It used to have so many games charting, now I only see Animal Crossing.

Much of the chart activity from the recent past can be attributed to the buy three get one download free promotion -- which has now expired. 3DS just isn't able to support a self sustaining software eco-system beyond the marquee Nintendo titles because as so many here on Gaf have commented, the software prices are just too high.

Many of the games worth playing are ÂŁ30 plus with only very time limited offers promoting the games at a discounted rate (such as at Xmas and Easter). 3DS is also in the uncomfortable position of being sandwiched by PS3 and 360 console hardware with a cheap library of quality games on the one hand and .99 cent games on smartphones on the other.

That promotion ended back in June, while 3DS showed great activity in UK charts till August, so 2 months well over the end of the promotion. Now, unless in England the promotion ended in August...

The (incorrect) thought process behind this is that the grand total of digital sales doesn't significantly affect the amount of total software sold.

So if we're talking about a 95% retail, 5% digital split, and retail is showing large YOY losses, digital figures end up being nebulous as they don't add much to the bottom line.

That's why I'm glad that NPD is starting a worldwide partnership to bring digital sales into the spotlight...with a major retail tracker putting real effort into it, maybe people will start to take it a bit more seriously.

I think we agree. :)

The problem is that we don't have a good handle on what the size of the digital market is, either in terms of units or value. The NPD Group puts out their estimates, but as I've said before, those figures slide around a lot. If you collect the monthly figures and then compare with the figures they give at the end of a quarter, you will see 1-2% change in the retail (good) but 20-40% changes in the rental/used and digital segments (not so good). Overall, the change isn't so bad (total market moves by like 15% when they restate figures) but that's still not ideal.

Finally, I personally haven't seen anyone but the NPD Group itself talking about those digital figures. Is there evidence that independent analysts are using them, and basing their modeling of future performance on the NPD Group's data? I haven't seen it, but naturally that's not a proof that it doesn't exist. I'd be curious to see such evidence.

I think ukie started a few month ago to publish digital download charts, but you probably have to be a member to get access.

In germany there is the biu who do a big market study twice a year - at least there estimates on retail sales were not far off from gfk numbers. They have full access to gfk/media control and all big publishers are members, so their estimates should be at least ok. But yeah it just doesn't feel as real as retail estimates.
Valve has another potential source of income there ...

Jesus Christ, didn't see an 83% drop for GTA happening. Stock shortages?

Pretty much, at least in Birmingham UK it seems very difficult to get a non preowned copy of it. That's why places such as CeX have bumped the price of a preowned copy to ÂŁ50 since they know people can't get it anywhere else in the city and are willing to pay

A 9 year old game. Impressive.

Wow, only Wii U game to chart is Rayman Legends. The system is pretty much dead in Europe.

Then again, what else would you expect to chart right now? Wii U is in a horrible shape in Europe, but the fact that the only medium or high profile game (that hasn't got a clearly superior version - i.e. wirth more content for example - on another platform) released for a month is the only one charting isn't too suprising, is it?

Holy shit, you weren't kidding. That's pretty disgusting of CEX, but not too surprising.

Don't know if it has been posted already, but this was in the Gamesmarkt 18 - Sep. 04. Interview with Bernd Fakesch, Managing Director Nintendo (no clarification if Gfk figures or Nintendo shipment, but probably Gfk).

Germany

Wii U: over 150k
New Super Mario Bros. U: over 100k

DS: over 8 million
3DS: 1.6 million (best selling console of 2013 so far)

----------------

GTAV first week sales in Italy were over 300k (over €20 million euros).

They call it "unprecedented", but I'm not sure it they want to say it's the biggest first week ever (since 2005, that is).

New charts.
‘FIFA 14’ remains at No1, holding off ‘GTA V’ for a second week as the gap between the two closes to around 31K units.

Sales of ‘FIFA 14’ are down by 68%, a slightly better drop than its predecessor ‘FIFA 13’ whose sales fell by 72% after launch. ‘GTA V’ (-34%) has to settle for No2, but can content itself with the knowledge that after just 3 weeks on sale it has already eclipsed GTA IV’s lifetime total to become the 12th biggest selling game of all time. It’s even more impressive in terms of revenue, as ‘GTA V’ now occupies the No5 spot behind 4 Call of Dutys, almost equalling the total of ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’.

Despite 4 new releases in the Top 10 there is still a large sales gap between the Top 2 and the rest of the chasing pack. Codemasters/Namco Bandai have this week’s highest new entry with the multi-format ‘F1 2013’ debuting one place ahead of Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’ which re-appears at No4 thanks to an enhanced HD version for Wii U. The other 2 newcomers are ‘NBA 2K14’ at No7 and ‘Just Dance 2014’ at No9. Half the Top 10 this week is made up of sequels to games that were in the Top 10 the same week last year. Two non-sequels, ‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’ (+4%) and ‘Disney Infinity’ (+22%) are the only Top 10 titles to increase in sales this week with the kid-friendly duo charting at No5 and No6 respectively. ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist’ (-23%) slips one place to No8, while ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2014’ (-45%) falls 6 places to No10.

WW at number 4 is a surprise, even if sales drop off steeply after number 2 in the charts.

FIFA 14 Vita held up better than the Wii & PC releases.

They probably don't want to write Wii numbers next to Wii U numbers ;). Seeing that Nintendo cites 150k for Wii U, it's definitely below 200k (otherwise they would have said 200k, I'm shure), so the attach ratio for NSMBU is well above 50%. That's amazing for the game, considering it was not a pack-in for any bundle yet. Also, it's a devastating sign for the console, because it bascially says that next to probably noone bought the console strictly for the other releases.Numbers like these at least explain why Rayman Legends performs well on Wii U and why it indeed is a good decision to put Sonic there. For me, as a platformer fan, it's at least a good sign that I will get a good amount of games in my favourite genre on this console.

Good debut by Wind Waker, although not sure if we can narrow down a number range for it.
And it hasn't even been properly discounted yet.

Sure shops have run a one-day deal or something, knocking the price down temporarily.

But it hasn't hit a permanent reduced price point like God of War: Ascension or Tomb Raider.
I think it's been bundled?
