PAL Charts - Week 44, 2016

Watch Dogs 2 will probably "bomb" as well.

2016 truly is the worst year.

I'm honestly a little worried and I'm normally never that kind of person. There is a disturbing amount of AAA bombs / disappointments this year, in a generation already low on output. People should be really embracing these games.

Honestly I'm kind of intrigued by it because I've been thinking for a long time that the AAA model is unsustainable and this gen is when things have basically been coming to a head, what with the longer dev times, more frequent delays, and "all-or-nothing" approach to expectations, player response, etc. I've kind of been hoping this is the kick in the butt publishers need to maybe re-evaluate things. I guess we'll see if anything actually changes though.

As a gamer for me this year has been pretty great. Enjoyed/enjoying alot of them.

Battlefield 1
Gears 4
Overwatch
Quantum Break
Forza Horizon
Doom

No. Other way around; the pubs need to embrace our needs, cos clearly going by sales figures, they're not.

Well if anything that means pubs doubling down on games as a service online games as what is failing is your traditional single player focused and big online shooters.

On the other hand, I'd argue several games did better than expected or outperformed their predecessors significantly, or at the very least, impressive numbers. I feel the more recent bombs have more to do with the holiday lineup being extremely stacked and really bad release date decisions from the publishers. I wouldn't take Microsoft's first party games (hell, even any XB1 exclusive) into consideration when discussing this matter, though. Those games have been "bombing" throughout the generation, or at least much worse than their predecessors. It's no surprise seeing QB and GoW4 perform the way they did, really.

This has nothing to do with Brexit, come on.

Lots of people have lost faith in CoD after recent years, then there's the fact that BF1 will have significantly eaten in to its share. CoD has been on the decline for a while now.

I was talking about the UK industry in general, not (just) CoD. Brexit might not be to blame for the state things are currently in, but once it happens, things are only going to get much worse on this front is what I meant.

Europe sure likes their shootballs.

That's really a crazy difference.

Oh it's certainly not all doom, and there has been some damn good success stories this year. I'm just a little worried a bit at some of these games adoption rates when looking how bleak the schedule has really been this generation. This holiday is the first time it feels like game releases are keeping up with the generation, and yet consumers aren't. I'm curious to see how some of these games leg out over the Holiday. Maybe sales will just be more spread out due to the number of titles

I think the flip side of the service model is that people are actually more than happy to keep playing their existing games and spending more money on them unless a really different or really compelling product comes along.

I don't see why or how this could be what people should do. If consumers don't respond to a product, its not their fault. Either the the product wasn't good or they're tired of it, went unnoticed due to conflicts or lack of presence, or the product is too similar to other products at market... some of which are highly effective Skinner's Boxes already and have the audience "committed".

This is like saying that its Japan's consumer base's fault that the console industry has collapsed in that market. No, the audience simply found what they liked on mobile/handheld and moved on en-masse when publishers failed to produce products of interest (circa failing to support the Wii's audience long-term, and like all markets, collapsing in on the same demographic).

Yup. Eventhough I have bought other games this year, if I was being better with my money I could have easily gotten by with Overwatch, Hitman and Hearthstone. Basically 99% of my gaming time has been on one of those three games this past year.

I'm definitely buying less and less games thanks to games as a service. I don't think I'm even buying anything else until Switch comes out besides card packs for HS.

All the constant sales aren't helping either.
There are just to many games lately and I barely managed to catch up.
It is pretty weird though, due the Brexit the prices are so damn low, it would be vastly cheaper to purchase my games currently getting them from Amazon UK or different places. Despite that, I haven't really the urge to get them all. We're speaking about a 10-30€ difference, which is pretty high.

Yet, we had so many delays and just imagine all those titles that were delayed, would be releasing this year.

I also wonder, what kind of role those hardware releases had on the current market.
X1 S, PSVR and the Pro will certainly tighten the budget for alot of people, while you can obviously argue that those people will also buy games.

ok, let me rephrase; massive success i.e. selling more than 1m units at launch

So FIFA, maybe RDR and GTA will be the only succesful games this gen then?

I think the flip side of the service model is that people are actually more than happy to keep playing their existing games and spending more money on them unless a really different or really compelling product comes along.

That's actually a really good way to look at it, never thought of it that way

Man sequels are not doing to hot year.

After failing so miserably with my predictions for Gears of War 4, Titanfall 2 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare I don't think I will ever make another prediction for the UK market lol

‘Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’ (-65%) remains at No1 for a second week.

‘Fifa 17’ (+6%) moves back up to No2 pushing ‘Battlefield 1’ (-39%) down to No3. It means the sole new entry in this weeks’ Top 10 is Bethesda’s ‘Dishonored 2’. The sequel is down 38% on the original ‘Dishonored’, which launched on 360, PS3 and PC in 2012. Its arrival pushes another Bethesda title ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition’ (-64%) down to No5. Several titles are boosted by retailer promotions this week with ‘Forza Horizon 3’ (+60%) climbing four places to No6 and ‘Overwatch’ (+144%) jumping eleven places to No7. However it’s ‘Lego Dimensions’ (+556%) who is the chief beneficiary with a huge sales increase propelling it from No37 back into the Top 10 at No9. EA’s ‘Star Wars Battlefront’ (+30%) continues its week on week climb up two places to No10.
Two other titles make their debuts in the Top 40 this week. The first is ‘Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization’ at No33. Finally Ubisoft’s VR title ‘Eagle Flight’ for PS4 lands at No39.

Week 45 blurb is up.

EDIT: Looks like they tweaked some numbers:

Bad Dishonored numbers...maybe they should have gone with those early copies as the reviews are stellar ;), and a fairly sizeable drop for a Friday release for COD.

A question: I see Dishonored released on tuesday, while Dishonored 2 released on friday. Does that have a large impact on first week sales or is it not enough to account for (a significant part of) the drop?

Games are so front loaded that it would probably have to be a smaller drop than that. Maybe that + digital is we accounted for the worldwide average of digital sales, but I still don't believe that 30% applies to us in the UK due to it being at least another tenner more expensive for the privilege of having less ownership.

It'll have some, sure, but nothing that will account for the drop, being down nearly 40% will not be made up by a few extra days sales, especially when day one is were the majority of sales are.

With no early reviews, I think it releasing on a Friday did have an impact on weekly sale charts. I bet allot of people were waiting for impressions before purchase.

Okay, thanks guys. Interesting sales, not a disaster like Titanfall 2, but stil not very good. Maybe it got drowned between the huge games (COD, Titanfall, Battlefield, Skyrim and Watch Dogs 2 upcoming)? I also heard some people felt a bit down on the original game after playing it, so maybe that had some impact?

Yeah, this may have impacted it as well. That would be a good thing, maybe it teaches Bethesda they should not try to bypass reviews.

not a disaster like Titanfall 2, but stil not very good..

I think its a disaster, companies do not green light sequels with the intention of selling less then the predecessor, let alone 38% less.

Be interesting if Bruno has week 1 sales for dishonored, so we can have a precise number.

In the U.K. apparently it launched 12th Oct '12. Which was a Friday.

Saw it coming though.

It does seem like they are making a tactial error in witholding review copies. It's like they realised everyone twigged that only bad games got embargoes, so they started doing with good games too. There was very little buzz about Dishonored 2, IMHO.
I guess they are giving it to Youtubers? But the only thing I saw from that was someone who made a video about the realistic poop in the toilets, lol.

I just think they assume their IP's are big enough to sell without the risk of a bad review or two making people cancel their pre -orders. With Skyrim, Fallout and now Doom i think thats probably right. But with Dishonored, and you have to think Prery next year they're not established enough names to sell without the positive buzz of Reviews.

I've stopped buying any bethesda games on launch due to their inherent bugginess, that goes double now they won't get any pre release impression. That said i loved the first dishonored. a positive, bug free review might have made me a buyer...

The first Dishonored released on a Friday my man, only a handful of big franchises don't release on a Friday in the UK, Dishonored isn't one of them.

Edit: Beaten

lots of new entries.
in my opinion shows the niche market of PSVR

I remember that there were talks about if Dishonored 2 could at least debut selling 35,000 units and that those numbers would be embarrassing.

Well, I have Dishonored 2 in that range of sales (~ 40,000).

Are my numbers correct, Kyonashi?

New thread will be up soon.

By the way, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare second week drop is horrible considering that pathetic opening last week, without massive promotions and discounts this year Call of Duty will lose the battle against Battlefield.

Edit: I just realized that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare sales fell by 55%, not 65% as GfK previously mentioned.

Yeah, I knew Dishonored 2 would under-perform. Another victim of the November mad rush.

What mad rush? This has been the quietest November in years IMO, September and October were far crazier.

I knew Dishonored 2 would under-perform too but I wouldn't blame it on November, it just didn't have any buzz after that bad E3 showing and their decision to hold back review copies certainly didn't help (especially since it's reviewed really well).
