Activision Blizzard’s colossal Call of Duty series returns with the Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games co-developed ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’, marking the eighth instalment in the franchise.

Launch week units puts it on an even footing with ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’, but higher by revenue. This makes it the highest grossing opening week of all time for any entertainment title, outselling the opening weekend box office of the last four Harry Potter films combined. The Xbox 360 version of ‘Modern Warfare 3’ is again the lead format taking 59% of units (compared to 55% for ‘Black Ops’) ahead of PS3’s 40% (‘Black Ops’ was 42%). We’ve got another new entry at No2, Bethesda’s ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ which is the publisher’s biggest ever opening week, more than twice ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ (Bethesda’s previous biggest launch week) and the 5th biggest launch week this year (after Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12, Battlefield 3 and only just behind Gears of War 3).

This means that last week’s No1, EA’s ‘Battlefield 3’ (-62%), is now at No3 followed by EA again at No4 with ‘FIFA 12’ (-3%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 3’ (+18%) refuses to budge with its fourth week at No5 and last week’s No2, Sony’s ‘Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception’ (-72%), is down four places to No6. The only other new entry to make the Top 40 is at No7 with Mind Candy/Activision’s ‘Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo’ followed by Warner Bros. Interactive’s ‘Batman: Arkham City’ (-41%) at No8. 505 Games’ ‘Zumba Fitness’ (+4%) is hanging in there at No9 and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Party’ (+485%) is back in the Top 10 after a 35 week absence thanks to the new hardware bundle ‘Nintendo Wii White Family Edition’.

I find it interesting that 360's share of COD has increased from last year.

Weren't there issues with the online portion on PS3 last year? Could be a factor.

We’ve got another new entry at No2, Bethesda’s ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ which is the publisher’s biggest ever opening week, more than twice ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ (Bethesda’s previous biggest launch week)
Remind me to pull this out in every thread where people say Elder Scrolls doesn't sell very well and that Fallout's success had nothing to do with the series.

*makes a note*

UC3 dropped heaps but it doesn't tell us anything as most of the games in front of it were new releases.

This week must have been an absolute monster for SW. The biggest single release of all time plus skyrim and there are plenty of other games there that would be selling alright.

The skyrim split is really unusually high for the 360.

Well, if they're crazy enough to say that now they'll say that Elder Scrolls is coasting on the Fallout name. hehehehe

It was a big week for Software.
The launch of two huge titles, plus a chart filled with numerous blockbusters, meant this week was the biggest ever for UK video games. Total take for the week was £120.8 million.

We actually did get numbers for that.

Last week Uncharted 3 was around ~116K, and it dropped 72%, meaning it did ~32.5K.

PC retail making up 15% of Skyrim is pretty solid, considering how many digital sales there might be.

It is totally reasonable that Skyrim PC could have made up 20%+ of sales, tying or beating the PS3 version like Oblivion did.

Who cares. It got outsold even by Uncharted, so it can't be that relevant.

From the OP:

The Xbox 360 version of ‘Modern Warfare 3’ is again the lead format taking 59% of units (compared to 55% for ‘Black Ops’) ahead of PS3’s 40% (‘Black Ops’ was 42%).

Gears of War 3 - 323,000
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Fallout: New Vegas - 154,000 x 2 = 308,000

It was a big week for Software.

Holy fuck that's incredible! COD really is a monster.

We actually did get numbers for that.

Last week Uncharted 3 was around ~116K, and it dropped 72%, meaning it did ~32.5K.

Gotta read the press release, always has good info

That's not good.

Damn missed that, pretty big drop there though not really surprising. To be honest i think if U3 doesn't improve on U2's sales by quite a bit than it is a massive disappointment. I feel like this one has been given a much bigger advertising push than the first 2 games. It also kinda means that we are starting to see the ceiling for the franchise.

Beyond that i'm interested in seeing the NPD numbers. Surely they must have sold big numbers there or i would think it will take a while to sell through that first big shipment.

Well if anything is likely to suck all the air out of the room, its the double-whammy of CoD and Skyrim.

Interesting that MW3 is apparently down 1.6% on BLOPS opening week, although Skyrim putting up unusually robust resistance most likely accounts for it, it'd be nice to hope that we're finally getting past this warmongering tosh... can't see it though ; ;

The beginning of the end for the COD series' growth? (granted that MW3 is still outperforming BLOPS on a WW basis so far)

Man, Sonic Generations is dropping like a rock!

So, from the platform splits: Xbox owners like shooters and WRPGs, PS3 owners like football and racing?
Highest selling racing game is on the 360 and the 2 highest selling games on each platform are the same.

I'd say owners of each console have the same tastes.

This is all that matters.
Launch week units puts it on an even footing with ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’, but higher by revenue. This makes it the highest grossing opening week of all time for any entertainment title, outselling the opening weekend box office of the last four Harry Potter films combined.

It's already by far the biggest franchise in gaming so it's not surprising. The real question for them is going to be if they can carry it over into next gen.

If anything if next gen has an even stronger focus on online and social features i could see COD continuing to be a juggernaught and maybe even dominating more than it is now.

It's going to be very tough for anybody to dethrone the series.

32k sales in a normal week is easily top 3. Skyrim and MW3 are making Uncharted 3 look a lot worse than it actually is.

i think GeOW3 and other games didnt drop that much.. mostly games drop between 40 - 60%... unless they sell block buster like COD.. i dont think even Battlefield dropped this much %age wise

Skyrim only just behind Gears of War 3 in launch sales and twice their previous best, congrats Bethesda, very well deserved.

Also:

05 (__) PC The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda Softworks)
12 (__) PC Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision Blizzard)

It's good to see some people have their priorities straight.

Gears 3 dropped 76% week two.

The amount of money Sony has budgeted for marketing U3 is what's making the sales look bad. They aren't even close to paying off the £5 million they are spending trying to sell the game.

It's kind of like a movie that makes $100 million, sounds good until your realize it cost $200 million to make.

I wanted a more accurate first week for CoD:BO than the "2 million" Chart-Track said last year. Turns out that 2m was just the unextrapolated 90% figure tracked by Chart-Track, which probably explains this;

UPDATE: The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment has been in touch to say the "just under two million units sales" and £83.1 million revenue figures for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are "unverified" and should be disregarded.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-11-14-uk-top-40-modern-warfare-3-sells-fewer-than-black-ops

Even with 1.6% drop it should still be well over 2m once extrapolated to 100%.

Not too late for the Uncharted 3 doomsayers I see, although personally I don't see anything out of the ordinary in terms of it's chart positioning, as Saiyar said Gears 3 also dropped 76% week to also, plus there was noway it wasn't dropping at least 4 places with MW3 and Skyrim in the mix.

So is Uncharted 3 a "normal" game?

Sony shipped numbers don't make it sounds like one.

It cant really be compared like that because Uncharted 3 isnt only sold in the UK. A game has one budget that goes for the whole world, so it is the worldwide sells that will tell if the game is profitable or not, not just one country. I'm pretty sure that Uncharted 3 will be quite profitable worldwide :)

That £5 million ad campaign is probably not over yet, and the game will contunie to sell as well.
