EA win it in injury time as ‘FIFA 09’ tops a hugely successful year by scoring the Christmas No1 ahead of Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ which drops to No2 and Nintendo’s ‘Mario Kart Wii’ which falls from No2 to No3.

It is EA’s 6th All Formats Christmas No1 in the past 8 years. A perfectly timed retailer promotion saw sales of ‘FIFA 09’ soar past its rivals, up 89% on last week, while Call of Duty could only manage a 13% rise and sales of 'Mario Kart Wii' jumped 40% bringing it within 3,000 sales of Call of Duty. EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Undercover’ makes sure of holding on to the No4 position as retailer discounting helps sales climb 27%, while Nintendo’s Brain Training is the only All Formats Top 10 title to drop sales, a non-mover at No5 with sales down 1%. Nintendo can celebrate a successful Christmas period however, with half the All Formats Top 10 made up of Nintendo published games. Nintendo’s games have enjoyed a strong presence in the All Formats Top 10 throughout the year and this week is no exception. Mario Kart Wii has been out for 37 weeks with only 4 of those weeks spent outside the Top 10.

‘Wii Play’ moves up one place to No6 and ‘Wii Fit’ drops 2 places to No10, but it is ‘Professor Layton and the Curious Village’ which exceeds all expectations, re-entering the Top 40 at No8, proving to be a popular Christmas stocking filler, no doubt helped by strong demand and renewed stock. Activision Blizzard’s price promotion appears to have centred more around ‘Quantum of Solace’ than ‘Call of Duty’ as the Bond film tie-in is back in the Top 10, up from No13 to No7. ‘Tomb Raider: Underworld’ gets a well needed Christmas sales boost this week, up from No10 to No9 with sales climbing by 22%.

I'm ashamed of my Irish brethern. UK-ers 'got it' the last couple of weeks, but no LBP reappearance at all over here. For SHAME.

Oh well, it's nice to see it staying up in the UK for another week. Even went up in the 'by value' chart this week. Nice to see Norway 'getting it' too.

WiiFit and Mario Kart remain the 2 best selling games in Europe, months after their release. When will it stop?!?

It's like that in the U.S., too, and they're still holding up in Japan quite well (Mario Kart Wii will hit 2 million and Wii Fit will reach 3 million within a couple of weeks).

Woolworths going bust is divine retribution for Valkyria Chronicles bombing in the UK.

If Yakuza 3 gets localised and bombs, then WH Smith is next.

I'm glad Prof Layton is getting some purchases (except for you Norway, come on). Its been good in Australia too from what i've heard, hard to find though, people have been buying Sight Training too...i cant really explain that.
No Rock Band 2 love in Europe at the moment, which is weird, mine just arrived in Sydney, and we ripped it up last night with the AC/DC expansion, it was pretty fun.

Hopefully, Rise Of The Argonauts will see some sales, although it'll probably bomb or be a sleeper hit.

Bear in mind that LBP has been on promotion in UK @ £19.99

We usually get the same high street deals here, at least, as in the UK. They're the same retailers.

It also went up in the value chart this week, which suggests it was less discounted this week, perhaps, in the UK.

It's messed up that it hasn't even reappeared in top 20 here.

When Nintendo releases 'a new hotness'. If they keep constraining the 'potential hit' supply like they have this year, expect those same names to keep cropping up over and over, and for title churn to remain minimal.

I'll just quote myself from the other thread:

Gears 2 must have done some pretty decent numbers by now. It was only out of the top 10 for one week (it hit 11th that week), and has been out all through November and December.

Not too bad, as it hasn't had the price cuts a lot of other 'big' titles have had.

Nobody ever mentions Gears, and in a bumper year with price drops all over the shop, it has done phenomenally well over here.

Gears2 did awesome, nobody mentions it because it is taken for granted :D

Jeez, New Super Mario Bros. still in the top 40 as well. I wonder what its worldwide sales are NOW?

Professor Layton is a really good success story - it's the non-game that people seem to accept as an honorary hardcore title. I wonder how well the sequels will do when they're localised?

Where is Brawl then?

Mario Kart Wii as well, but somehow it was still number #1. Strange world we live in...

I dont see anything dethroning Mario Kart as best selling Wii game for quite a while...

Same as Wii Play. When the Wii stops selling, or sequels come out.

Holy shit at Layton. If NoE is going to wait another one and a half year to bring the sequel over, it would really show how lazy they are. D:<

Probably like 15 million something

I went into Game, Smyths (large indy toy store) HMV and Zavvi today and the cheapest I saw LBP was £36.91.

:(

New Super Mario Bros.: 15.890.000

Last week, we learned that CoD5 outsold MKWii by 27,000 units. This week, we know that CoD5 outsold MKWii by 3,000 units.

We also know that sales of MKWii are up 40%, while sales of COD5 are up 13%. Using this information, we can mathematically deduce the following:

This week:

CoD5 (360/PS3//PC/Wii/PS2/DS): ~145,500
MKWii (Wii): ~142,460

Last week:

CoD5 (360/PS3/PC/Wii/PS2/DS): ~128,761
MKWii (Wii): ~101,757

I was working with those numbers early to get the LTD of COD5. It should has passed the 1 million mark on week 49 so it's missing 63k somewhere at least.

Week 51 145,643 (+13%)
Week 50 128,888 (+2%)
Week 49 126,237 (-15%)
Week 48 151,632 (-30%)
Week 47 216,618 (-51%)
Week 46 442,078
Total 1,211,096

Layton would be number one if they actually had some stock, some places only sell it with a DS.

A lot! In spain it's one of the few wii games being advertised, the others are Wii Fit,Wii music and Animal Crossing.

0 marketing for Layton here, I'll be pretty surprising seeing that game, charting in the top 10.

Interesting how Lips has seemingly received a shitload of advertising in the UK while it's gotten next to no promotion at all in the U.S.

At least it seems to be paying off for MS in the UK, as Lips has now charted for the past three weeks, I believe.

Yeah, it's doing surprisingly well here. I was in a store the other day and they sold about 8 copies while I was in the store, plus it's being bundled with Premiums.

All promotion I've seen in US is for You're In The Movies... =/
