PAL Charts - Week 9, 2014

It launched at second position in Japan. But it didn't do so great.

I know :P I also know that despite the 4th position last week and the 21st this week, DK has not surpassed 40.000 sales in the UK so it's worse than Japan.

France is pretty much the only place in the world where the Wii U does ok outside of the holidays, and that's still stretching the definition of ok. It shouldn't be that surprising that it was first when it was the only notable release that week. In the UK it's done in line with other smaller games like Pikmin 3 or Wind Waker HD. US numbers next week will be more telling.

Do you know if Pikmin 3 is a million seller WW? US numbers will be interesting yeah (if we get them of course).

It seems that way. And you have to wonder about the future of the Wii U if even the usual evergreen Nintendo titles don't sell on the console.

Mario Kart will be the most interesting numbers for sure. Strongest brand vs strongest poison... brbrbr

Looks like a fairly good week for the Xbox One, with Titanfall out soon (with bundle/price drop) and the PS4 still in short supply it could have a couple of really good weeks coming up.

Next gen accounting for 75% of Thief sales. The market moved on fast. Silly people in a recent thread actually thought Destiny would sell best on 360. lol

Yeah that's not going to happen. A shame that publishers went very safe into this gen with so many cross gen titles.

The shock in some people's face when Titanfall sells more on the XBO than PC+360 combined.

Eh, that's fairly likely. Think new console adopters are most likely to embrace a new IP and obviously PC retail is non-existent anyway. We'll never know true numbers unless EA release some Origin numbers.

I don't think it's even shipped that many. It never got highlighted in either the Q2 or Q3 earning releases, and WWHD did when it was a little over a million.

But the same goes for the XB1 version as well, I´d assume a fair share of the early adopters went digital only/mainly.

True, but I think this chart shows the retail market is still there with Thief. With all the deals you can find on physical, I wouldn't be shocked if a large proportion of the digital adopters are just the ones that know the US store region trick.

A multiplayer-only game might have a bigger digital majority, however. I think chart-track is going to be increasingly irrelevant as this generation churns on.

I see it exactly like you. The picture will become more muddier, and it´ll be hard to gauge to what extent a conversion to digital happens.

Yep, another generation with Japan caught with their pants down and then left to play catch-up with the west over the next 2 years. Ironic that Square might be the most forward thinking out of all of them.

I think we can put to rest the user base argument for last gen. I cant see any 360/PS3 titles topping charts if there is a next gen version present this year. Gonna be the quickest transition yet.

Next-gen versions of games always chart the highest at launch for many of the launch titles as well, yet months in, it's the last-gen ones that are more consistently within the list compared to the current-gen ones.

Next-gen sales mix will be very healthy, but I wouldn't go so far to say that the market have moved. Maybe by end of the year we'll see numbers skew more towards current gen, but as it is? It's a hard tell without observing the LTD and legs.

glad to see Thief on top, a flawed gem, i really don't get all the hate and bashing, just play the damn thing without focus at master difficulty :-)

Nah. Im not seeing the titanfall bundle alone doing that. However, it does make the race somewhat more competitive.

It's worth considering that the PS4 solus is well ahead of the Titanfall Xbox One (and the in-stock + FIFA, for that matter) on Amazon already, despite stock not being expected for a further eleven days after that releases (March 25th). I'm not sure what Microsoft expect a March release to do for hardware sales, but it won't be incredible. They'd have done well to hold the game for another six months if a game-changing impact is desired.

Well, Honestly, I expect the price cut to create a snowball effect in the run up to fall, with the console easily being had for ÂŁ300 in some places. Ive already seen flash deals for ÂŁ330. Maybe thats what Microsoft wanted. Who knows.

Italy:
1) FIFA 14 (PS4)
2) FIFA 14 (PS3)
3) Inazuma Eleven 3: Ogre all'Attacco (3DS)
4) Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Wii U)
5) Just Dnce 2014 (Wii)
6) GTA V (PS3)
7) The Last Of Us (PS3)
8) Luigi's Mansion 2 (3DS)
9) Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4)
10) Mario Party Island Tour (3DS)

Recently, I've seen lots of commercials on specific channels (Nickelodeon, MTV, CN, Disney Channels) for several Nintendo games, including Inazuma Eleven 3 and Luigi's Mansion 2. That's probably the main reason why LM2 is in top 10. Such a continuous push reminds me of the Wii / DS era, and it's been definitively one of the strongest tools used by the company back then...strange to see it being really back only now, at least in Italy ( don't know what's the situation elsewhere).

Didn't save Wii U in first year.

Won't save Xbone without very strong exlusive library.

The availability issue was equally worse in USA. Probably due to japan launch.

This might give us a good idea about USA numbers. I expect xb1 to outsell ps4

What do you mean by "they made the wrong choice"?

Probably referring to Japan launch, leading to availability issues.

I disagree though. If Japan loses too much momentum and interest for the next-gen console, the longer it'll take for Japanese to start working on PS4 games... and they're already very late as it is.

PS4 availability in UK seems terrible right now.
Game, Amazon, Tesco, Argos, all out of stock.

I don't know, on amazon.co.uk sometime around February 22nd the PS4 got an expected stock date of March 25th, It's pretty tough to find here except for in CeX, which is selling it for ÂŁ370 pre-owned.

It is.

However, Xbox One demand is worse. This is exactly when Sony SHOULD be struggling for stock. In the US, January's NPD sales were fairly unremarkable, yet it almost doubled the demand of the easily available Xbox, and in the UK it's consistently topped Xbox sales since launch, and is currently ahead of it on Amazon (despite no stock until after the Titanfall bundle), which gives some idea as to the relative desirability of the respective devices.

Fewer people are willing to drop big money on a console at this time of year, and less still are going to find it impossible to wait for their first choice to come back into stock.

Who, and what choice?

thanks

Sorry went in robot mode while on the phone

Everyone who went for ps4

Very little decent titles to buy for it

Xbox on the other hand.... Blitzing it

Would expect for a 2;1 sell out like GAF has beern reporting playstation would have killed the charts in software sales

Lucky for Microsoft the money is in the software I guess

At this point nothing is going to get them back into gear. They already fucked up last generation. I really no longer care if they want to stay in the mobile and handheld ghetto.

What? Look at Thief sales between the two:

According to Mpl90's estimates, Thief sold between 53.500 and 62.400 units.

01 (NE) PS4 THIEF (SQUARE ENIX EUROPE) - Between 24.600 and 28.700
02 (NE) XBO THIEF (SQUARE ENIX EUROPE) - Between 15.500 and 18.100
<snip>

Sales ratio of 1.5:1, around the same as the hardware split.

XBO has 1 more game in the UK chart (PvZ, an exclusive), and has a FIFA bundle with the console.

So yeah, totally the 'wrong choice'. smh

No it won't. Stop making it seem like there's some competition between those two.

Who said I'm trying to do that? Stop assuming meaning where there is none.
