Paragon of Decency: So I found some pictures of my boss.....

Yo D&D GAF, what alignment is OP? I'm bouncing between these three ATM:

  • "'Chaotic Good'...act as their conscience directs, with little regard for what others expect."
  • "Lawful Evil'... methodically take what they want, within the limits of a code of tradition, loyalty, or order."
  • "'Neutral Evil'... those who do whatever they can get away with, without compassion or qualms."
I'm thinking Chaotic Good, since he didn't actually commit the blackmail (AFAIK) but he did access the files, which was indeed a breach of privacy?

If so, then according to my rulebook, OP is most likely a unicorn, elf or copper dragon.

hey, my girlfriend busts her ass at geek squad and never looks into anyone's pictures, I'm insulted.

Yeah, hey, I worked at Best Buy/in Geek Squad too, and I never even heard of anyone even considering anything like the OP here >.>

I probably could have worded it better. I've worked with chain store techs and they've all been able to not sink anywhere near OP's level, which was my point.

A corporately contracted IT couldn't rise to the standards of unvetted late teen/early 20 chain store techs.

I'd go with Neutral Evil.

Since, even having the thought of using the pictures for personal gain doesn't seem a fit for "Good"
The lack of using them for anything significant so far would tend away from "Chaos"
"Lawful" anything is definitely out though, since he's already accessed the pictures (and the pictures weren't illegal)

Ah, yeah, I'd say that's a fair assessment.

...hm, you may be right. Neutral Evil then.

Would you say he's a drow, a cloud giant or a yugoloth?

Dear lord this thread.

Just tell your CEO you've seen the photos but assure him you won't do anything with them....

... apart from that one time you fapped to them.

Then compliment him on his nice butt.

So... what do I do now? I make decent money so I don't feel like I should try and blackmail him into a raise or anything, but at the same time these definitely seem like they could possibly be useful some day.
I said ...
Dude, if you do shit like that you're an asshole..
Just the fact that you're rummaging through the folders of something you have been asked to delete is a breach of mutual trust between co workers..
But this much... Black mail...
Get a grip....

[...]I always respect their privacy and don't go snooping around in their folders [...] Naturally curiosity got the best of me and I couldn't help but click it [...] "nudee.jpg" to "nudee32.jpg". Then I see ton's of pictures of women's feet and even a folder full of photos of his wife in lingerie.

[...] blackmail him into a raise [...] these definitely seem like they could possibly be useful some day.

OP, I edited your post for clarity, because you don't seem to be aware enough of how your post comes off.

when he comes back make sure you have his wife's pictures open and are masturbating profusely.

he will initially be shocked but reveal his cuckold fetish, you will get to sleep with the boss' wife without consequence.

and then you will become boss. ascending the corporate ladder has never been so fun

I love this version of reality. Do make this happen, OP. Do it, don't be afraid.

The thing is, if you fix/service computers or work in the IT field, there's always the chance of seeing something you're not supposed to. That's why moral code and ethics play a huge part.

Yeah, hey, I worked at Best Buy/in Geek Squad too, and I never even heard of anyone even considering anything like the OP here >.>

I used to work at a cell phone shop for a couple of years and there were high level employees who liked to look at people's pictures from the phones they'd turn in. I never participated but I couldn't go to anyone because the manager was one of the people fixing the broken phones and pulling pics off of them.

Like I said, I've seen a lot of shit of people's computers, but I never dive in. I just back it up/clean the PC and go on with my life. I'll be seeing more nasty shit I'm sure.

I just caught up with the entirety of this thread... holy shit.

OP, perhaps you are still following, perhaps even anonymously. I would urge you read every post - the threatening ones, the joking ones, the 'understanding' ones. Then re-read them pretending you are your boss, or your boss' wife, or some complete stranger. Think about the conversation. Think about how your own posts could be interpreted.

I actually believe you would not seriously blackmail someone (though I tend to generally believe in the 'good' of people, and have been proven wrong many times), and were looking to make a 'funny' post about something 'funny' that happened. I even think there's a 'funny' version of this story, something like "so I was checking folders to ensure everything got copied, and on the new machine the 'thumbnails' view was on, and there were pictures of my boss and I think his wife naked! Holy crap, I closed it, but do I admit to my boss that I saw his shlong and his hot wife, or do I just pretend I never saw a thing? Help me GAF!" And, I think it could have been a pretty funny thread with a LOT of replies of advice that "you never saw a thing". Frankly, you can't work in IT and NOT accidentally come across things - how you deal with any of this is important.

Hopefully you sincerely did not mean anything here, and this all blows past, and you learn from it. If I can offer some unsolicited advice (for whatever it might mean coming from a complete stranger on a gaming forum website):
-Never snoop, never open files, basically do not do anything not requested or needed in the line of the task at hand.
-Never copy any content without permission or instruction to do so. Don't even use your own drive for transfer/storage, or if you have no choice but to do so, at least use a secure delete tool to remove it.
-"You don't want to know."... "Ignorance is bliss."... "It's none of your business."... "Discretion is the better part of valor."... apply all of these statements liberally and generously to aspects of your work.

I get to his pictures folder and everything is fine but then something catches my eye. A file named "nudeee.jpg". Naturally curiosity got the best of me and I couldn't help but click it.

Yes, you can help but click it. It's probably really interesting and really juicy and fuel for jokes and office gossip and and and and.... and "you don't want to know." Really.

Not at all. And again the pics were labeled nude. What young guy is going to see a picture named nude and not click on it?

Never at work. Go home and surf porn to your heart's content. Separation of Church and State.

Just got my first IT job a couple of weeks ago for a small health care staffing office.

Also, health care industry? HIPAA? Take the advice above "You don't want to know" and multiply by Infinity. You legally have NO reason to access ANY content you are not supposed to. Even if this was not a corporate machine. "You don't want to know."

I'm not making it up and I didn't go snooping either. I checked the folder to see if it was empty. I selected them all and drug them to the backup folder and when I did there they were. I had hoped they would just be some pics of some hot girls since he's told me many times about how hard he would party when he was younger. I was sadly mistaken.

No. You don't want to see them that way, if at all. Don't let your own curiosity get the better of you in the workplace. "You don't want to know."

I think it's weird if it's an authority figure. I mean no one gives a shit if you see the slutty secretary naked but when it's a CEO... it's a bit weird.

If I can be so bold as to speak on behalf of the 'slutty secretary', he or she probably DOES give a shit if this is seen without that person's knowledge, and under the guise of a trusted IT resource that will respect the privacy of others.

Pretty amazing rendition. Really, OP, look at this and see how this can all be (hopefully 'mis') interpretted.

TLDR; I think (hope?) this whole thread is a misunderstanding. OP: pretend you didn't see a thing, and DON'T keep any copies of anything. "You don't want to know."

"I opened it because I thought it might be a picture of some soda."

The thirst is real.

OP sounds like the anti-hero of a drama film. The fact that he actually admitted he might have use for the pics is shitty as hell, yet I can't admit that this isn't also amusing.

That's honestly what I had expected from this thread.
And it would be at least somewhat reasonable.

Not:
1) Looked inside a folder (alright, that's at least passably understandable)
2) Saw a file named "nude" (alright, an unavoidable consequence once having done the first thing)
3) Opened it (not alright)
4) Checked the rest of the pictures (not alright)
5) Did further inspection on them (crazy)
6) Even "jokingly" entertained the idea of blackmail (insane)
