Parasite Eve 2 Was Better Than the Original

Not even close. The original had better atmosphere, actually useful magic, MUCH better music, a fun storyline that celebrated its B-movie campiness, and a cool action take on ATB combat.

The sequel dropped all of that and gave us a lame Resident Evil knock-off complete with fucking tank controls instead. Plus, they replaced the awesome NYC setting and, instead of replacing it with LA like they should have, dropped the player off in a tiny dust bowl.

Lol PE2 worse im many ways. Still a great game. Gonna replay it soon.

Ew, one of these threads again. Stop declaring your awful taste to the world plz.

I actually do like PE2 for reference though.

I liked pe2 more.

Only for the simple fact that i couldnt stand aya's walking / running speed in pe1.

I can agree that part's a bit annoying. I said it in another thread, but the first time I played it, I thought it was an esthetic touch since she was running in high heels. Sadly, I was proven wrong when she changed her outfit.

OP is right on the money. Parasite Eve 2 is several times better than the original, no matter what people say to the contrary. More visually appealing, more content, more abilities, a more interesting plot, all of that good stuff. The controls were annoying but you got used to them.

PE1 was... decent at best. It did have the better soundtrack, though, I'll give it that much!

PE2 was complete garbage! The writing, the setting, the story (the little bit there was), the characterization, the enemy designs (all 3 of them), the pacing were all terrible. The drop in quality from the first game to the second was like none I have ever seen before. I also thought it was funny how the little bit of story there was goes out the window in the final quarter of the game or so and the game gets padded for the last 2 or 3 hours.

I loved the melancholic atmosphere of the original, aided by one of the ps1 era's best soundtracks. None of this is in the sequel. It's a nothing game caught in-between trying to rip off Resident Evil and retain PE1's RPG mechanics; it fails at both.

Nailed it.

PE2 is the better game in all respects but soundtrack.

They are quite different mechanically though, personally I love PE2's fusion of styles and extra gameplay modes over PE1's more traditional JRPG approach.

Its a badly underrated game in my opinion.

How anyone can like PE1's combat over PE2's boggles my mind. PE1's combat was horrendously bad.

Only decent thing about PE1 was the soundtrack and Daniel.

Because PE1's was unique. Still is. PE2 is basically an RE clone.

And I like PE2 as well, but I'd never put it above the original.

I still remember the first tine I played PE2 when it first came out....... the atmosphere KILLED ME!!! WOW till this moment I'm typing this post, once I remember PE2 I get the same good and amazing feelings I got playing it the first time.

I agree that 2 was a better experience overall, but I loved both of them. Still gotta get my grubby paws on 3rd Birthday...

Replayed PE1 a year back: it was still great.

Replayed PE2 after finishing T3B: was nigh unplayable.

:)

did pretty much the same thing (minus the t3b part). got about 8 hours into pe2 & haven't gone back...

Sorry for bumping, but I just found strange video on image of Disc 1. Havent saw it on YT before. Wonder where is it from and why it's on PE2 game

Well yes? I actually thought this was what most PE fans thought. Always seen PE2 praises and not so much for PE1.

PE2 was better in every respect apart from the soundtrack.

Thing about its combat system is that it evolves relatively slowly over the course of the game, as you get more options the depth of the system improves massively so that the whole "RE clone" argument becomes entirely inaccurate.

Try NG+ and Bounty Mode before you write it off, its a very clever hybrid of the ATB and a free combat system.

Ugh, there is no, no, no way anyone could think PE2 is better than the original. God damn, the music ALONE in PE1 is better than ANYTHING in PE2. PE2 was so incredibly lifeless. The atmosphere and charm of the original was completely missing. It's not a terrible game or anything, but it's almost as disappointing as 3rd Birthday in my books.

The original PE is a classic. It's a compact, short, and perfectly paced game with a cool and COHERENT new game+. I'd put it up there in that perfect Vagrant Story-kind-of-game category. PE2 seriously does not come close.

I think I was just about to beat PE2 when I went to buy a PS2 with my dad sometime in 2001.

Never saw my copy of the game after that and it really bothers me. How can a video game disappear just like that? It's a mystery.

Bought PE2 while in Japan when it launched Xmas '99.

It made the list of being one of the worst purchase decisions I made that trip.

No wonder this game needs 2 CDs. ;)

On topic. I just replayed PE1 a month ago and I'm playing PE2 right now. I like PE1 more, a lot more, but for what it is, PE2 is a good game.

hmmm... very interesting.

I wonder if PE2's team was already prototyping (is that a real word? :p) their next game during PE2's production? Regardless, definitely looks like early work on something pretty specific.
Wonder what happened? :/

Sorry, you simply do not best the setting of an abandoned New York city at Christmas time with a flawless Shimomura soundtrack accompanying it. You just don't.

Maybe. Personally I thought that's video from some mini game, like those pinball machines in Dryfield's bar.
There was also unused video in Xenogears disc with Star of Tears song, but at least it belongs to the game, while that PE2 vid is totally out of picture

I finished PE1, but I only made it to the beginning of PE2's second disc and then moved on to something else.

Therefore, PE1
