I believe the portal will disappear if the zone you used it from has reset, which according to the loading screens happens after 8-15 minutes of being empty.

(downloading the client now)

Nearly every impression I've read still says combat is slow/unresponsive, in part due to attack animations. I guess I'll see in a few minutes.

I lost interest in D3 due to the ridiculous drop rates, but in terms of gameplay it's very good. Combat just feels right, and very polished.

It's not like that later though. There is a high level guy streaming right now if you want to check it out while you wait http://www.twitch.tv/thearioc

edit: I guess he's done now

I didn't feel that it was slow, but I only played for a bit as a Ranger, maybe melee is worse? I saw just a bit of that unresponsiveness, but it at the point I got to it was only a bit annoying.

It can be slow to start, but really opens up after you get some skills and buffs, especially attack and movement speed.

The devs have acknowledged this and they are working on ways to make the combat more fluid and responsive.

I'm watching as I download the client.

Combat actually looks good, from what I can see; I plan on playing a melee class though. Kripp did say to him, the end game seems amazing whereas the control is average - whereas D3's engame is non-existent and the control is amazing.

Love the graphical style; environments look great, enemies look great, etc.

Which class?

I plan on playing the Marauder first. Seems the closest to my main D3 class (Barbarian) plus I've always been more into strength based melee classes in general

Be prepared for a fight. Melee is considerably harder to play than ranged in this game. There's still major balance issues with melee vs. ranged. You simply take much more damage and can't really kite like ranged since you've got to be in melee range (duh) for most of your skills. They do fine in late game with good gear but the early goings will be tough, just a warning.

True, but I find that spending your gems and what not to upgrade your gear early on helps a bit in regards to melee. Sure saving them for the late game is preferred, but as of now, melee fighters need every edge they can get.

Makes trading a bitch because damn it, gotta get that early protection!

Yeah for people like us who know the ins & outs of the game already, creating a melee char would be no prob. Try to imagine what it's like for those who are brand new to the game. GGG needs to address this more than they have so far otherwise the frustration of getting stomped so early on is going to be too much for a new melee player to handle. They'll just log out, uninstall, and go play some other clone.

That sounds quite appealing to me actually lol. While I like feeling like playing the Hulk with my D3 Barbarian, the overall lack of challenge made the game a bit boring at times before inferno; and even in inferno, Act I is a breeze.

Get Resolute Technique as soon as possible. Nothing is worse than having your attacks miss half the time, including your heavy hitting skills.

Because dexterity and accuracy stuff is required to hit things, that Keystone let's you ignore accuracy and crit altogether. I felt like a god when I got it.

Played for a little more than an hour. The game has lots of potential but has to overcome some control issues.

things I like:
-The level of depth and itemization is amazing. You can customize so much shit, it feels like your character just got dumped into a deep pool of awesome. The skill gem system is awesome and feels far more liberating than just having the typical strength/stamina/etc D3 has. I got a blue gem that gave me an awesome aoe lightning attack. Plus your gems level up the more you use them, which rocks.

-On that note, the passive skill tree offers a sprawling array of possible builds. It might be too sprawling in fact. Right now I'm stacking life and strength while looking for a path towards better defense.

-Attack abilities are pretty cool.

-Difficulty is pretty good too. It's real easy to get swarmed by enemies, and the ranged mobs do some decent damage. I haven't died yet, but the game's normal mode is already far more challenging than D3's. I haven't run into any big bosses though, but I hope they are mechanics based and punish you for being bad

-The loot is nice, and I love the bartering system. Instead of selling shit items for small amounts of gold you recycle into repair costs and an AH, you can sell them for useful mats which you can then trade to players.

-Each act seems to have a hub area where you can get quests, sell items, find groups, and trade with players. It feels a bit like Guild Wars 1's town system.

-Graphics look great; art, monster design, etc are all cool and set a nice atmosphere

things I don't like

-Control feels...very odd. At times it can be almost unresponsive, and more often than not it just feels weak. I'm playing a Marauder, which is basically like a Barbarian, but the combat never gives me the "oomph" I feel when clicking as a Barb in D3. Kripp was streaming earlier today and mentioned the combat feels more like D3 once you start getting haste stats, and I hope that's true.

-Attack animations are rather slow as well, leading to a floaty feel.

-The game drops a shit ton of loot but your inventory space is quite small; just picking up a handful of items will fill your inventory up. This wouldn't be too much of an issue if you could simply port back to towns like in D3, but instead you have to find portal scrolls in order to head back.

-------

Obviously this is just a beta and therefore an unfinished product but I feel confident saying that if this game controlled like D3, it would be the superior game. The level of customization and rewarding loot system are more interesting, and this game actually has an end game. Plus I'm quite intrigued by what I've read about the various game modes (a hardcore mode, an open world mode where you can kill players and take their loot, etc).

Don't pick up stuff you don't need or will sell for shit. You will have more than enough scrolls for everything.

D3 treats players like babies with baby-style inventory space. You have to look back at D2 for comparison.

Also, D3's A-button for Awesome isn't that great for gameplay. They focused all on presentation that the gameplay is shit. Long cooldown skills is anti-hack&slash, and skill progression is terrible because you end up with many "high level" skills being absolutely useless that it's not even viable to use.

Player choice is gameplay, and there's a million times more choices in this game than D3.

As for the "oomph" or whatever crap that means, when you get higher level and your choices in the build and choosing skills, you'll start clearing out mobs and one-two shotting rare mobs that it feels more satisfying than some loud sound effect going off with bodies flying all over place when you cleave.

I'm not talking about seeing bodies fly though, I'm talking about every click feeling like it did something. So far with PoE, it often feels like nothing is happening. That "oomph" isn't really about the presentation or satisfaction of effects, it's about actually feeling like you hit a mob when you click on it. It's weird to explain, but gameplay wise you can just tell when a game has it. I have more than a few qualms about D3, but the controls and basic gameplay aren't on the list.

As I said I think PoE is solid, and will be playing more tonight. But it has some control problems that seem baked in, so to speak.

By the time I hit 20 I wasn't even looking at most of the loot. It's too much of a pain in the ass to try and barter with people, so you're best off just ignoring all equipment you won't use that isn't rare (yellow). That should let you just filter out a good 70% or so of the drops.

There's definitely some input lag from clicking an attack until it goes off. I think it has to do with how their network code works. The floaty feeling gets particularly bad any time my latency goes above 100ms or so. Press F1 to check FPS/latency information, by the way.

I dunno. When I hit a mob, I hear a big massive smack and the mob dies.

It feels good.

What i love about this game is even white items have value as you can turn them into 'currency' Wisdom scrolls. Failing that you can even use an Orb to turn a white into into something good.

Sphere Grid passive skill tree is just asweome. Also Marauder is my favorite so far, it has alot of weight to the attacks. I hope the add some female skins to the characters, i don't care if paid (developers gotta eat!)

Samantha was on 2 Week Hardcore league before. Apprently we are alowed to swear but not swear at people (eg. bulling).

I agree with this, I don't know where people are getting the lack of oomph from. I hit something, hear a smack or slice, screen might shake a little depending, or if I crit it shakes a lot, when you freeze something and kill it they shatter. Overall I find the combat pretty satisfying.

Also, just got into Ruthless on my Shadow, (A little behind level, I'm 41) and found my first ever unique!... level 21 Deerskin Gloves, bit of a let down, but I guess they'll just go into my stash for another character for the moment.

This game is just great. Part of me wants to keep playing with their packages and part of me just wants to wait until release and start fresh.

Is there any eta on when the beta will end or is it all still "later this year"?

I want that level 8 shield that's like 48% chance to block.

Open beta should come within a few months. They'll do a character wipe from closed beta to open beta, but I hear there won't be a wipe from open beta to release.

I imagine it will be like lots of "open betas" for other f2p games where the game is pretty much up and running and ready to go, but they don't want to declare it as "released" yet.

Anyway, it might be a good idea to start investing time once open beta begins.

Finally got some good items and skill nodes and my Templar just came to life. Before he felt sluggish, he missed a lot, but now I'm slaying mobs with Lightning Strike + Added Elemental Damage, and Glacial Hammer.

I ended up going with two-handed staves, so I got some good accuracy and speed skill nodes for that. I'm trying to use more magic but I don't know how to incorporate it into my build, running up to mobs and wiping them out seems to be working fine for now.

The freeze-and-shatter is phenomenal. It makes me grin every single time I do it, and I always go for cold damage now because of it.

If I buy one of the packs that allows closed-beta access, does that mean you basically play the game up until it releases or are there allotted (excluding maintenance) times to play?

(I'm aware that the game is f2p and that there is an open beta right now)

You can play it whenever you want outside maintenance if you buy a closed beta pack.

It means you can play at any time during the closed beta. So when this open weekend finishes you can keep playing.

is there an easy way to identify items?
my scroll of wisdoms are never enough :(
by the way where do you buy scrolls of wisdom?

I'm new, so you probably have a different town or NPCs, but instead of gold or whatever, when I trade with one of the first NPCs, he gives identify scrolls and some weird blue balls. Depending on the item.

Lol i didnt know that. I'm watching Kungen stream right now where he was talking to Chris Wilson and Chris told him that unique that Kripparian dropped was designed by Brother Laz and he is helping them with designing uniques!

every diamond supporter can design a Unique.

Notch from Minecraft e.g. is a diamond supporter.

But only a handfull of Diamond Supporter Uniques are already in the game.

So I finally got into the beta over the weekend after creating my character a month or so after the first beta invites went out and I was struggling like crazy. Got to the act 1 end boss and just couldn't do anything as a lightning witch. Saw that I was in legacy league and remade in default and now the game is so much more playable. Before I was struggling with what little spells I found, and even then they were extremely weak. Now I'm finding so much more spell variety and I'm still 7-9 levels behind.

This game is incredible, aside from some sloppy combat mechanics which I'm sure will get ironed out.

The depth to the customization is insane! This whole materia/sphere grid tree is driving me madd with possibilities.

I've been immersed in this game all weekend, and I can hardly await the full release.

I only got to level 20 or so, (only have access to this weekends stress test) but I'm thoroughly looking forward to spend more time with it when it finally comes out.

I'm totally amazed with it.

The difference is Brother Laz is actually working with the design team to make Uniques. He's not a diamond supporter. Which makes your comment weird.

I turn on the stream, see him finish 1 boss and then this:

i have to play this
