Path of Exile (F2P Loot Hack 'n Slash) Open beta later this year

I sold this one:

For Chain (I needed this), 5 Chaos Orbs and 3 gcp. Did I get ripped off or was it a good deal? Everyone PMed me for the gem :/

5 chaos is not that bad deal with chain amd 3gcp.

Quality on skill/support gems are really valuable. You got 18% which is very high.

This game has taken way too long to come out/go into open beta. I've followed the thread this entire time. The hype was there a few months after D3 since that was a disappointment, but now D3 is actually a good game with the patches and loot balancing. This has taken too long, I honestly think GGG blew it. The revenue model is going to be a challenge for them as well. Character and bank slots aren't needed, they give you plenty right off the bat. So all that's left is cosmetics, which is a weak base if that's your foundation for your F2P model. Take into account the character models are fairly small/thin, so seeing the detail on them isn't that easy unless you zoom in but nobody plays zoomed in.

Here's my prediction: GGG will add something controversial to the game that will help them get revenue. It won't happen right away but it'll happen a little down the line once they realize there's no steady income stream. I'm thinking a RMAH could be added in the future, which would be funny since their community is so against it, but it may be the only way PoE can survive in the long run. Literally the entire game is free in its current state.

You did fine. Bear in mind however the prices on orbs fluctuates wildly, often from day to day. If you're unsure, ask in chat for a price check, or say "listening to offers on ____" and pick the best from the offers you get.

The Ledge is godly for leveling and farming.

Yeah it is. Fellshrine Ruins is ok too, more slow moving zombies and a bigger area than legde, but its not as concentrated and a bit spread out. Not sure which is the most efficient, probably the ledge.

There's going to be special ladder events and leagues you have to pay for to enter. I'd imagine they'll sell certain unique maps in their store, as well as the expected flashy armor, spell effects and extra tabs, nameable tabs etc. Other stuff too is no doubt planned, hopefully it won't be detrimental to the game.

Kripparian and Kungen have both been extremely competitive, and you can bet the race will be on for the first hardcore clears of merciless. They've been streaming the game and its getting a lot of grass roots support, though places like IGN would really be the exposure the game needs.

You paint a pretty bleak picture, and I hope you don't end up being right. But even if you are, I've had more fun in 3 days in this game than all the time I spent on TL2 and D3 combined. It's the best this genre has produced since D2, and I had my moneys worth already. Anything else is just icing on the cake. I think adding a RMAH would do more harm than good, people would be disgusted and the backlash would be insane.

God damn it, how hard can it be to find a x3 green 1x red-linked item? Used 9 stupid fusions or whatever they're called and it failed miserably :( I'm so sad

I'm not usually the overly pessimistic type, I'm just trying to be a realist here. I loved the game, played over 10 days worth of it and I want it to be successful, but it's going to be a challenge based on the stuff I'm hearing they're banking their revenue stream on. I hope I'm wrong.

Of those items you listed, only the spell effects and flashy armor would interest me, personally. I'm not sure that many people care about leagues, especially not enough to pay for them. Most will just stay in the general server.

I think the Guild Wars 2 model would have been perfect for PoE. Give it a $29.99 starting price and then put those cosmetic items and accessories in the cash shop, along with some boosts and maybe some sort of lottery ticket/random treasure chest that has a chance for rare cosmetic items. As it is now, we're just getting too way too much for free... literally the entire game.

Vendors stock changes with every level up and its sometimes pretty good base for searching sockets and links.

You are assuming that people play PoE because D3 is mediacore game. That is simply not the case here. D3 main problem is that it's not Diablo game like people wanted where PoE is spiritual sequel to D2/D1.

Frankly balancing never was Diablo3 issue since there was no PvP. No proper leveling, shit loot, RMAH, int/dex/str stats/, shitty story, No PvP, no ladders, spellcasting with hammers, DPS fest, junk affixes for items and many more things makes this game mediacore at best.

They can't fix most of those problems because it is how games is created. Sure fighting animation/physic is fun but this alone don't make a good game.

This points that people will stay with PoE and they will play it.

As of money it's 20 people studion they don't need xxx milions like diablo3 to recup their credits. From their backer program they earned 5mln$ which Chris stated that is a lot of cash for them. And you clearly have no idea how much people want to buy things that will give them opportunity to change their look (look > HOME)

Also if you look into their forum and various interview you will see that they are bunch of devs which know what to do with their game and game quality is 1st priority above all things. They changed release date from december to january because they didn't want D3 premiere thing (meaning errors)

As of GW2 model i will ask you this way:

Which generated more income ?

1. LoL
2. GW2

Now consider that PoE is awesome game (which really is) and you will see that this game will be played by ton of people.

Diablo 1/2 would not be hit classic if they were not good.

I don't think they've missed the boat. It just comes down to publicity. The community size has more than doubled over the past month thanks to streamers like Kripp and the increased beta key giveaways. I used to get 500-700 online players using the /online command, now I always get 1200-1800.

That being said, there need to be a huge range of cosmetic purchases for players to want to buy. No point in wanting to make your character feel unique if everyone is buying the same things.

More granularity in purchase options would be good too. Right now you have to buy 100 points at once which is $10, way more than a simple impulse buy.

Publicity is coming, for example with announcement of Open Beta Eurogamer posted news about PoE for a first time. GGG devs have also planned flight to USA week before Open Beta for some press events. They also have trailer in the works for launch and just being able to play OB will spawn many reviews and previews from media.

I have 2 problems with PoE, the combat feedback isn't there yet. Diablo 3 does this perfectly (and the 1 thing in Diablo 3 they have nailed imo). And the camera in POE is...weird its like between overhead and iso, is there a technical reason for this? It makes things coming from the bottom of the screen more difficult to anticipate than the top.

Other than those 2 things I like it.

I need to PM Chris with two questions, about:
- microtransaction coins gifting, i would love to have this function or even just buying them as a gift
- folders for stash tabs, for example it would look like that
armors | weapons | gems | all and when You click armors, You get 1,2,3,4 or whatever You have them called, for weapons 5,6,7 You get the idea. It would so ease the whole stash management.

good idea. Post in in Feedback forum. It is really read by devs.

Screw this. I'm buying tons of stash-space.

I do lol.

Well that was stupid question but my point is that PoE is fucking good game. It don't need to be used as D3 killer or anything. Games is crazy good because it changes much in arpg gengre in good way. It is direct evolution of D2 where D3 is new game

What peope tend to forget about this game is that its still a work in progress. I thinks its surprising that the game is this good and its still missing somethings.

Gotta say, the folders for stash tabs would be an awesome addition to this. I would ALMOST pay for that as an unlock, because I get a bit OCD about organising my stash. Though, I'm quite sure they've already added naming tabs in so it'd be more like gems with red|blue|green|support under it. They'd also have to think about if you'd want multi-level foldering of tabs. Like you could have armor folder, with head|chest|feet|hands under it with tabs under those folders...in case you ended up with too much gear... Now I'm going overboard haha.

UPDATE: and scorpion as pet !

scorpiondock.png

The Open Beta patch (0.10.0) includes a variety of new cosmetic pets. Here's a screenshot of one of the variations of the Scorpion Pet. My Q&A session with Kripparrian over the weekend went well! There's a link to the stream of it here and a summary (kindly transcribed by mrpetrov) here.

We've also posted three more race events for the rest of the week:
19 Dec (NZ time): Two-hour solo hardcore race
20 Dec (NZ time): Three-hour party hardcore race
21 Dec (NZ time): Three-hour turbo solo hardcore race

More events will be posted once we've planned what they'll be.

If you're artistically inclined, the Fan Art Competition still has plenty of time left before it ends. We're very keen to see what you can come up with.

And again (only a few days of this left!), if you haven't yet voted for Path of Exile in the 2012 IndieDB "Indie of the Year" competition, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I started playing last night. I'm having fun but there's so much to learn!

So quick question, I get pop-ups saying that a gem is ready to level up. Is there any reasons why I wouldn't want to level it? Why do I have to actually click on it to level?

Oh and the skill tree is scary as shit lol....fuck...

It raises the requirements, (probably) making it unusable for your other characters.

Eg, Phase Run is an excellent utility gem that makes you run faster for a few seconds. Leveling it up raises its Dex requirement making it unusable to everyone else who has base Dex.

So, I'm looking to hop back in. Haven't played in several months. Have they added Act 3 yet?

january 23.

Oh ok, so it's going to coincide with the open beta. I might as well hop in and futz around with my marauder, then, because he's going to be wiped when the open beta starts.

They really need to hire some better artists if they get enough money when the game ships.
They couldn't even be bothered to line the textures up on the boards there so the edges aren't on the tops of the board. This isn't a low resolution texture problem, just lazy texture artist.

Scorpion isn't good either.

Don't get me started on the human skin.

I like the way the game looks. Those are some minor (albeit valid) complaints overall.

I agree that the f2p system is a little iffy, but at least it's not pay to win. In fact it's pretty much the opposite...I really just hope people pay for the aesthetic additions. I've said a few times on the PoE forums that I don't think the model is that great for making money, but I hope to be proven wrong as GGG is absolutely fantastic with the community support.

I'm actually glad they're taking their time to perfect things, they have come a loooong way in the last year; they keep on refining things rather than just throwing everything in all at once. Be patient and I think you'll be rewarded. We're incredibly close now.

edit: oh and does anyone know if they've cleaned up the combat? I haven't played in a few months and know that you couldn't move mid swing before. I know they said they would fix stuff like that. They also said they were going to work on making the animations better so things felt more fluid.
