PC+console gamers: Upgrade to a high end gpu or next gen?

I'll probably get a PS4 before I upgrade my GPU.
It all depends on how things go over the next year. Don't count on getting either before fall 2014.

I'm running a i5 2500k,7950 and 4gb ram atm, so decided to go for a PS4 for the exclusives (namely Killzone, Infamous and hopefully Knack turns out great). With the ram requirements jumping up, I'll likely grab another 4gb to tide me over at Chrismas, and get an SSD in the new year. May also look into an aftermarket fan to oc the country, and that should hopefully see me through until summer 2015 and do a full system upgrade then if need be.

urrrrgh. and i use my 1440p monitor for console gaming too and playing through gta5 was a pickle to my eyes indeed.

I think ill just hold off everything this year and wait for more exclusives in 2014 and maxwell...

maybe get an ipad instead lol.

I just bought a nee PC at the begining of the year so I won't be upgrading it anytime soon. I will invest in a next gen console because I know there will be several exclusives I want to play.

Bought an i5/GTX670 rig last Christmas, will likely save money for next gen consoles down the line. As much as I'd prefer to be able to max out settings again and again, I'm fine with 720p medium settings if it comes to that in time.

I'm not sure yet. I think I will upgrade my graphics card and stay with my PC for a while (although it is not really necessary for me to upgrade yet), and buy a console when it is cheaper and there are better and cheaper games for it. I bought a PS3 only a few months ago and I loved the decision since I could play all kinds of cheap great games.

Neither, im holding onto my gtx 670, i need to invest in a monitor above all else. Currently use a tv. I'm waiting/hoping for an ips monitor that is g sync enabled.

I only play games @ 1080p so my current 2 year old set up with 6950 and 2500k should do fine until next year when next gen GPU are cheap. As for console gaming I always play 1 gen behind so my plan is to find a cheap ps3 during november for all those japanese exclusive.

Well, the two strongest PS4 exclusives aren't out till 2014... but on the other hand, neither are the g-sync monitors/8 series NV GPUs (and whatever AMD answers with)...

So, yeah, I'd postpone all purchases until 2014.

Upgrade your PC.

Or do you want to pay 399$ for 1 or 2 Indie Games? What must-have exclusives are coming out on PS4 this year? I don't see JACK.

Come on now. The choice is clear.

Let everyone else be PS4 Guinea Pigs.

I'll get a PS4 maybe in 2016 when there are games worth a damn. And if you're deciding to get a PC or upgrade your PC vs getting a ps4, then think about the possible issues the first batch of ps4's might have. Hell when I decide to upgrade my gpu I'll wait at least 3 to 4 months after the initial release so all defects are taken care of.

So any change of plans now that next gen cross gen game specs are coming about and now that nvidia has dropped prices on their top end cards?

During the time since i made this thread, i did cancel my console preorders (was planning on flipping, but i feel a bit bad for random strangers)... but i'm hesitant on my next move. I might just end up getting a ps4 if launch impulse or w/e hits.

Maybe i should get a ps4 and play it on my old 42" 720p lcd thats in the guest room :3

but gtx 780 for $500 D:

I'm seriously considering canceling my PS4 pre-order now. Problem is, I ordered it on Amazon and paid off the order by buying gift cards. So if I cancel it, I'll only get Amazon gift card credit back. I don't need $400 in Xbox One games so I could buy a new graphics card.

The 770 is only $330 now and comes with Splinter Cell blacklist, AC4 and Batman AO. But...my dell XPS 8100 only has a 350w psu.

I have a core i7 870, would it be worth it to upgrade the PSU and GPU? Or is my CPU gonna limit me?
Also, if there is a better thread to ask this in, I would really appreciate a link. Thanks!

Edit: Just looked up my specs. i7 870 is LGA 1156. Meaning it isn't compatible with any newer processors. So basically, I'd have to replace my GPU, PSU, motherboard, and CPU....basically known as a new computer :)

I guess it's PS4 and Xbox One for a couple of years for me, unless Steam Box turns out to be a competitor.

The hype for me is exclusive games and mainly RPGs and has nothing to do with resolution and frame rates

My top anticipated games are Bravely Default on 3DS and Dark Souls on PS3

I cant say there is a single next gen game i am very hyped about, besides maybe Witcher 3, which i will play on console

Plus some kickstarter titles, like the Torment etc RPGs, if they turn out good

Generally i have zero reason to keep anything other than my non gaming work PC to play a few kickstarter titles, everything else i will play on PS4 on my HDTV

I just got a 7970 earlier this year. If Battlefield 4 is any indication, I should be just fine with this generation's ports. I'll probably upgrade again in 2015 or whenever I can get a vastly superior card for around $300-$400

If you plan on dabbling in games programming then go with PC first. If not go with a console and then PC in late 2014 or early 2015. People who are building a new pc just to play games right now are setting themselves up for anger in the future when their top rig is quickly midtier.

ive decided to just ultimately wait for the steam machine to be released. i havent seen anything thats exclusive to next-gen that i absolutely need. So a high end steam machine and a Wii U will get me through the next generation!

Based on the fact that next gen consoles aren't really behaving as next gen, I'm gonna say skip them until there is games and go PC instead.

There's no games out right now I'd be willing to buy a console for when I can have more or less the same thing on my PC or my PS3 or 3DS. Plus they can look better even on a 2 year old rig and will still look good 5 years from now.

Here's what I'm doing. I'm going to hang in there with my gtx 670 and hold out to see Mantle mature some more and how good Maxwell/GTX 800 series will be. I'll be getting the PS4 and Xbox One. I realize that in some cases, I might have to settle for high settings instead of Ultra. It will still be prettier and smoother than the consoles most likely.

I'll wait till my 7970 can't run at 60fps, 1920x1080 with AA/SSAO turned off. Once that happens, I'll gladly grab a GPU. But for now, that PS3 is looking a bit ancient.

I wish it could be such a simple choice for me.
I can't "upgrade my GPU" because my system is almost ancient at this point and it would bottleneck it.
I need to change my entire PC right now. The fact is that I already delayed for a while ("You know what? I'm still doing just fine, I can wait" etc) and now I'm in a very bad spot where I'm *craving* to buy the new system as soon as possible, but at the same time everything seems to suggest that it would be wise to wait few more months for the true cool stuff to reach the market (20 nm, DDR4, etc).

Neither, but PC first next year.

- You can get a good view of the video card landscape.
- These console launches have been exposed as being rushed and poorly planned with nothing of note on the gaming side of things. None of the games offered on either system are worth the price of admission. With word of networking and Os problems for both, stay away and let them sort it out.

So, upgrade PC next year and wait on the next gen consoles for either this time next year or hardware revision. They will need time to mature.

Hype or functionality? - unless you really want the launch ... window ... exclusives.

I'm currently set to do both, but leaning towards bailing/selling off PS4 if money becomes too tight. If wipeout was there I wouldn't even consider it.

BF4 MP framerate issues reported by digital foundry smashed optimism pretty quickly after the recent delays.

My pc is very old and gpu is dead though :P

My GPU is more than fine for the time being and these new consoles have fuck all for software, I'll be sitting on the sidelines just clearing out better libraries on PC and older platforms for now.

Considering my 1.5 year old PC is already stomping on the 'next gen' I don't have to worry about anything. I'll take another look at my components in a couple years. When I can get a good deal on a 4K 144hz gsync type monitor I'll build my PC around it and at that point likely be ahead of next-next gen as well.

With next gen systems out quite soon I was pretty dead set on getting 1 or both earlier this year, but a bit of the hype has died with devs backing out of their original 1080p 60fps. But then i realized my current rig is having a bit of a hard time getting stuff maxed at 60fps (3570k 16gb ram 7870 xt)
Dude, that is my exact same set-up and its running bf4 like a champ on Ultra (50-65 fps), but im guessing thats because i have a 1680x1050 monitor. I have no reason to upgrade at all as of yet. Im very pleased with the 7870xt.

Edit: To answer your question I would rather upgrade than buy another console.

i've been a console + pc gamer since the first time i seen an NES and the first time I played a game on our PC.

I always roll with the consoles for the first couple years of it's life and then i switch back to PC for multiplatform titles mid gen when GPU's are even stronger than they were at launch.

Considering next-Gen consoles will be the min PC specs soon for multi-platform games, I'd get a console. Wait until hardware that has at least double next-Gen specs to be affordable. Saying that I'm probably going for AMD's FX-6xxx CPU too, considering I'm on a 2.2ghz pantheon II. That upgrade, the HD 6700 I have, and a next-gen console will keep me a float for years.

This.

I got a decent computer right now, but I'm also getting a PS4.

I may actually want to take a break from the PC considering how close PS4 games are getting to looking like PC games.

But when the 800 series comes out, I'm going all in, and building an insane, overpriced ($~3000) machine.

Afraid so.

Hoping for a bone to tide me over until 880 series is out. 1440 gaming was pushing it on 680 at decent settings, and expecting things to get a lot worse performance wise when developers flex their ports to take advantage of new engines.

If you buy a console now or you buy a console in year 5 of the gen, the console will be exactly the same (spec-wise) and will play all the games exactly the same. If you buy a monster GPU now or you buy a monster GPU in a year or so, it will play games drastically different.

So based on that, get the console now since day 1 or day 1000 it will perform the same, then get a GPU later when you can blow away PS4 performance on the cheap.

To put it another way, buying the GPU now and the console 2 years from now will leave you with 2 platforms with similar performance with neither one feeling like amazing graphics and performance. Buying the console now and the GPU 1-2 years from now will leave you with 2 platforms with drastically different performance and will leave you with noticeably better graphics and framerates on PC that put this next gen of consoles to shame.

So do you want 2 next gen platforms, or do you want 1 next gen platform and 1 next-next gen platform?
