PC+console gamers: Upgrade to a high end gpu or next gen?

Might upgrade to a 760 GTX in a couple of months. I'd rather get an Oculus Rift than any of the new consoles. I'm pretty bored of incremental updates. I want new tech, truly new.

Going with PS4, and may never get an Xbox ONE, until maybe a year after launch if it's worth it, and they clean up their mess. PS4 is already bought and paid for.

PC-wise, I may be looking into a new card coming up, but with all the new cards, and changes happening, I'm afraid to because I might miss the next best deal on a great card that's what I'm looking for.. So I dunno... My 670 is doing great right now, but with games starting to require more than 2GB of VRAM, it's starting to get winded..

3570k 16gb ram 7870 xt

While its fine for most linear style games, its never that great for open world games and thats increasingly more popular, and its even more apparent now that i got a 1440p monitor.

Just game @ 1080p and High settings until next years cards come out.

GPU now for the best experience, next-gen consoles later when there are enough exclusives to play so that they're not collecting dust for long stretches.

I'm getting a PS4 on the 15th. As for my PC, I'm gonna wait for the 900 series cards. I think my two 560s will hold out for a little while longer. If not, I will cave and jump on the 800 series, next year. Everything else is more than enough for the years ahead.

As a console only gamer I could tell you why I only play on consoles.

1. Console exclusives

2. Convenience

If these are not too important to you then upgrade your GPU.

Seeing as how most of the games I want are coming to PC, and I have a 660ti, I'd hold off on both but I'd get a console the second I see an exclusive I must have, until then I'm gonna chill with my PC.

I'm console first, PC second. So I'll be going for a next-gen system first.

I'll upgrade probably next year, I'm in no rush because I have a GTX660 and it'll last me a while.

My 2009 rig has a single GTX 580. A 780 would be literally double the performance for a single slot. In your case though, you aren't really that far behind at all, so there's not really any reason for you to upgrade unless Vram becomes an issue. Not everyone really wants to mess around with SLI though for various reasons.

Point number one is why many play on consoles. Right now though there simply aren't enough to warrant a purchase (to me).

I bought the PS4, I have a good rig so I update it when I cant play on high settings anymore.

wow, didn't know this was gonna be so one sided. A bit surprised. I guess i just realized all the games i'm sorta caring about are also on pc. Heck there are enough hints that mgs5 and ff15 might hit pc too.

But that new console smell is quite alluring too lol.

upgrade your GPU now. forget next gen consoles for a few years. You'll be able to play most all those games on your PC at a higher fidelity than on the console. Unless you're in love with Forza, Halo, or Infamous (lol) then stick with a GPU upgrade.

This is the first gen that I'm holding out on buying a "next gen" system within the first week. I own a WiiU, and bought that day one, but...

I'm definitely waiting for those to come down in price.

And heat, and noise. People that refer to the fact that the card was "built" to run at those temps are forgetting that there's more inside a case than just the graphics card.

$400 + $50PA is a lot of money for a license to buy sony games. especially when there are none.

$200 when there's a whole generation's worth of them makes more sense to me.

getting both consoles.
pc is capable, but always ready to overhaul.

if one has to choose, it certainly comes down to personal preference.

Consoles now, PC later. the difference between games won't be huge right now, just like it wasn't in 2005. wait a few years and then PCs will really start to look better than consoles.

This is sound logic right here. The closer to PS4/X1 release the lesser advantage PC is going go to have.

I upgraded my GPU to one actually made for gaming this summer (for around $120 if 10 SEK = USD 1 which it isn't but a lot of companies make that conversion. Just like $ = €.). First real decent card I've had actually, have only had OK or bad cards before.

I made this choice three months ago OP, and I don't regret it.

Buy the high end GPU first. Then get a console when they get the games you enjoy (or the mid-life price drop/re-model).

Go ahead and spring for something absolutely crazy, like 290X or 780 level. DON'T settle for mid tier/high tier stuff like the 760/770 or the 7870/7950 if you don't want them.

I thought I would regret spending that much money, but I got over that REALLY quickly. Enthusiast teir cards eat through absolutely everything, and allow for insane AA and near perfect image quality. It's a wonderful feeling to never have to worry about compromise when playing your games.

EDIT: Also, you won't have to deal with shenanigans like this very often, because the PC will always have games you can play.

Post I agree with the most. And it's not like you can't sell your GPU once a better one you want comes out.

What's the best bang for your buck card coming out for Christmas going from a 560Ti anyway? It would be the 770 or 780 right?

Never a wrong time to upgrade.

You want to jump in now and be fairly future proofed you can by grabbing a 780, R90x, or 780ti. 3gb Vram should be good for 1080p for a while yet. Then if the heavy hitters like Witcher 3 come in and you get low frames, just go SLI or crossfire.

In addition to this, if you want to go green, G-Sync will make lower framerates infinitely more tolerable than they currently are.

PS4 will be a great option to start with as well.

Wonderful time to game.

PC is a must eventually though. Steam OS, G-Sync, Mantle, Steam Controller, and Oculus Rift are going to melt brains.

Spend money on GPU upgrades soon, Buy a PS4 when The Last Guardian comes out and by then the PS5 will have launched and you'll be able to pick up a PS4 for $20.

The only problem with this plan is that Mario 3D World might end up being really good.

Neither. The good stuff for Xbox One and PS4 is about another year off so...

my 560Ti (1GB overclocked) will have to do for now till next year when the 800 series launches.

When i snag me a 870 or 880 i will be golden for a good couple of years. After that in say a 2 years the PS4 and Xbox One library of games should be alot more mature and that is when i will grab me a next gen console.

New GPU next year. Next gen console in 2 years.

You want to stick to just Nvidia? If so wait for 780 Ti to come out and snatch up a 780 when the price drops, or get the 290x. Both excellent cards.

I'll only buy a console when Bungie/Activision stops teasing about Destiny on PC and confirm that it won't be released for it at all. Or whenever a game that I think is worth the $450/$550 admission fee is released. So far, Destiny is the only console game that looks good. I love Forza as well but not enough to get a new console to play it. So GPU + CPU first, hopefully before year end.

Console exclusives is a reason to play on consoles, but not a reason to only play on consoles. I love Zelda more than any other franchise, but I can't do without any multiplats, let alone PC rpgs.

But SLI and Crossfire are hit and miss and from what i hear they give problems.

No sense to upgrade GPU now when Nvidia's 800 series is around the corner. By the time that launches the 700 series should drop in price. Hell, the 600 series should be a steal by then.

Shopping for GPU's in the window after new series launches makes more sense and not before.

My old rig is finally winding down and with some perfect timing to boot. Requirements for some games are past its spec sheet and its time to build a new one. Because I HAVE to have a PS4 despite reasonable reasons to wait a bit I'll have to postpone the PC until spring of '14.

I will pick up a few choice components on sale this November on Newegg despite that. Can't wait for this black friday deals.

I bought a 770 GTX a few months ago using my PS4 preorder money. I regret nothing, specially with the somewhat weak PS4 line-up (I know it's going to get much better).

I would recommend at least waiting for an inevitable 760~770 price drop then bask in the glory of Steam's holiday sales. Wait until PS4 library matures.

after seeing this thread, contemplating on just cancelling my ps4 amazon order, and just saving money.

dark souls 2 next year is still one of my last gen games that I'll get day 1, and a couple other rpgs.

and my backlog too....

I'm going console this year. I've lost a lot of the excitement for the launches in the past couple of months but I still don't feel like doing a build. I've been using a 5770 this whole gen. It has lasted well the whole time. I feel like this is going to be another long cycle. If I were to do a build now, it would a R9 290 or 280x but I'll just wait until something like an R9 290 is $300. That would probably last all gen better than my 5770 did last gen. I'm really interested in that true audio stuff. I want to see how Steamroller performs as well.

I'd personally do neither just yet. While the 7870 isn't the most powerful card, I'd rather just wait to upgrade until it really wasn't good enough to play games at a high framerate at all. Even if I can't play games at max settings, I feel like upgrading so soon would be a waste. I don't plan on upgrading my 660Ti for maybe two years.

At the same time, buying any console at launch is probably not the best idea for me. I'd wait a couple months to a year, when more exclusives are out and announced.

I got a PC with a GTX 680 4GB and one with a GTX 670 2GB and will be getting a PS4 in November since I'm more of a console gamer really. Hopefully, both PCs will be able to handle console ports at better than console settings for about a year or two. Then when new graphics cards are released for around $500 that dwarfs the performance I can get with my GTX 680 and are also power efficient and quiet, I'll upgrade my PC. Hopefully I don't have to upgrade my CPU since Intel did a socket change from the 3770k I have to the 4770k so any new CPU I buy would probably require me to also upgrade my motherboard as well which I really don't want to.

I'll upgrade my GPU (gtx 560 atm) when I see the point to doing so. Most... bordering on ALL single player games that I want to play run fine on high or medium settings. I'd benefit more from a CPU/mobo/ram upgrade than a GPU upgrade atm as well.

These are some of the games I am interested in atm:
Hearthstone
Extraction (prob early 2014) - formerly known as Dirty Bomb
Titanfall (march 2014) <- prob 1 of the few games I'd need upgrades for to play at solid fps
XCOM enemy within

Although there are a few games on xbox one that are appealing to me. I would just prefer not to get sucked back into XBL gold membership subscription. Same reason why I don't play FFXIV atm since subscriptions can be draining.

Honestly, I don't see much reason to upgrade GPU atm other than to get better graphics or FPS on games that are out now. Watchdogs is a bit away, MGS5? Not sure if that has been officially announced for PC but they are looking to do it. FF15 heard same kinda talk.

I am almost curious as to why people are upgrading to crazy expensive rigs right now when the games aren't that compelling... BF4? meh... CoD ghosts? hmmm... I really don't see the point of upgrading yet other than for the hype.

PS4 at launch, 180 when KS:R launches and whole new PC late 2014. I can't even fathom how much of an upgrade I'm in for by then considering my rig is low-mid.
