PC FPS games with active online multiplayer

Hey all,

Just got my new PC up and running recently, and am looking to expand my FPS roster beyond TF2.

I bought MW2 off Steam, but the matchmaking takes forever - I don't know if it's because I'm low-rank or what, but I can't seem to find any games.

What FPS games out there for PC have the most active online multiplayer communities?

Bad Company 2 and Black Ops both use dedicated servers. It's easier to find a game.

It's easier to find a game in MW2 if you have people in your lobby. It can be hard when you're all alone.

Battlefield 2 (about 8000 online)
+
Quake Live
+
Call of Duty 4 (about 15,000 online)
+

+
Unreal Tournament 2k4 (about 1000 online) -scratch that lol.
+
Halo 1 (about 2000people online)
+
Call of Duty 2 (about 4000 online)

Gathered this from game-monitor.com and steam stats.

MW2's online community isn't limited to just the one you get when you launch the game, although I'm not certain how much I'm allowed to post about them here.

Most major FPSes that haven't been made redundant by a sequel still have a playerbase of some size. As well, you can still find games of both UT99 and 2k4, and basically any version of Quake or Doom 2. CoD4 has an extremely large amount of players on at any given time and is (in my opinion) a better game than MW2 and BLOPs. There is also no excuse not to play Quake Live.

Hahaha. Great game, but I'd guess half of these people are practicing for the Giantbomb UT2k4 TNT tomorrow night.
Doh just realized that myself, I was playing last month and there was no where near that amount. my bad :lol

Unreal 2k4 still normally has a few hundred people on at any given time.

Battlefield Bad Company 2. So much fun, and tons of awesome situations that just happen without any planning.

anyway to see how many people are playing borderlands still? been wanting to play that.

Should be alot, especially after the recent sale. I still need to finish up the game in co-op and the expansions.

That's disgusting, I can't even look at you!
Me neither, I'm too scared.

Yeah, I jumped online one afternoon and was most likely a burden more than anything else, not knowing what the fuck I was doing. I then figured I'd practice with bots to learn the layout of the maps and some basic strategies, much like I did with CS all those years ago, but they're even more useless than me.

I've been telling myself since 2007 that I'll get into TF2, but it just hasn't happened. I haven't even played CS/CS:S since June. MP on consoles has never interested me and it seems as though my penchant for MP on the PC is waning too.

Jesus! people still play CS? amazing :O

Before TF2 went F2P, the two games constantly fought over the top spot.

Steam says I've played thirteen hours of it. I liked it when I played it, but the longer I'm away the more crazy it seems. More than anything really though, I just don't think there is a class for me, I don't really care for any of them. I liked Medic more than the others, but I'd still much rather play CS:S.

Honestly, TF2 is one of the last shooters you need to worry about like that, especially now that its F2P. Boot it up, do the training missions, play on the Valve Servers for a bit, then jump on the GAF server with us.

I'm pretty sure those BFBC2 stats in Steam are only for copies bought on Steam. The majority would be either physical copies or Origin copies, neither of which feature in the Steam stats.

Not criticising you or anything, just wanted to point that out :)

I've been playing a ton of War Inc. lately. It's a new free to play shooter just released on Steam, and although not first-person, still kicks ass with deep customisation and well honed SOCOM-ish gameplay. And unlike other free to play games, everything you can buy with real money you can also buy with points earned through just playing the game.

Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike still have a huge amount of players playing.

Bad Company 2 has some people playing as well but it will probably drop sharply after BF3 comes out.

TF2 is an amazing game to start playing now. Loads of content and variety, amazing art and gameplay. Also a lot of people are really bad at the game right now since it went F2P, hell I went 23-0 the other day, so it shouldn't be too hard to pick up.
Other than that, CS/CSS are always fun, Left4Dead is pretty good for a co-op FPS experience.
Edit: Just realized you said you want to expand beyond tf2, oops.
