PC Gamer: "PC Master Race" makes people uncomfortable

I wasn't aware. What happened? What do you mean by "it hasn't been welcome"?

It is frown upon calling people Master Race, its a silly way to dismiss other people arguments just as calling them PC fanboys and making straw-men .

And has been mentioned since 2011-2012 that calling yourself Master Race is a banneable offense too.

I love PC gaming. But I really dislike the "PC MASTER RACE" bullshit. Most of the people that I've seen using 'pc master' act like they are better than everyone else, they have such an elitist and toxic attitude. It all started as a joke by zero punctuation but so many people hide behind that badge and act like elitists. They take it so seriously and act so insecure. No matter where on the internet, whenever someone throws around those words in in a conversation/discussion it becomes such a toxic environment. In those pictures you also see the console gamers depicted as poor and dirty people with filth all over them. Absolutely pathetic.
I also can't stand the fact that one of the biggest PC communities on reddit is named after it. I want to join a PC community that isn't childish like that and brands people as PEASANTS for enjoying other platforms, it's just ridiculous.

No worries, Evolve's "PC Monster Race" edition ensures that the phrase will die. Any time a meme is officially recognized (especially in such an obnoxious manner), it's on its last legs.

Then you seem to be agreeing there is a line in certain circumstances. That was Fredescu's point, not for or against censorship in general.

If a comedian is known for Holocaust jokes and people know that and go to listen, that's their business. The same comedian probably does not walk down the street and randomly tell people Holocaust jokes.

For another example, in videogame chat and internet forums, certain slurs are well-known, common, and offensive to certain people. They are almost entirely absent on NeoGAF, because this community has chosen not to accept those slurs. Evilore could have told people to be offended and deal with it, but he didn't.

Um, of course private things can set their own rules. Evillore could ban all mentions of christianity that mock jesus.

The point is that, he seems to be advocating self censorship based only on the fact that people may be offended. Being offended isnt a big deal.

One thing's certain: not enough WWI games come out for me to call Germans the PC Mauser Race. Not going to give that distinction to just Nazis in WWII games.

I'm fine with PC Master Race when used in a joke-y way, but more often than is healthy people misinterpret posts using it. Also counts as a Yahtzee reference, which usually isn't funny (nor unfunny).

What? The Nazis coined the term "master race".

Would you be happy if PC gamers started joking about a "final solution" in regards to consoles?

The word has geen used for years and,as i said, i haven't seen direct nazi references.weird.

I'd argue that using the term in a lighthearted way actually takes the power away from its original meaning. The same way that the n-word was reclaimed by blacks as a term of endearment.

I feel like, if PC Master Race didn't exist, there wouldn't be all of that awesomely hilarious Gaben/PC-MR art. And that is a world I don't want to live in.

I'm sorry easily offended people's, I can't do it.

The Gaben thing is interesting though. Without a company behind PC gaming and supporting them in an official capacity and no mascot or promotion, a large amount of people have escalated Gaben to that position, simply due to being a great influence for the platform

This all well and good, but this does nothing about the unchecked privilege of PC owners.

We're not gonna see any PC Gamer editorials about that, and that my friends is a problem.

I don't use straw men, this is why I haven't noticed anything.
Is it banneable if it's used as a joke?

Yeah, you see, I have many friends online (and some of them I do plan to meet eventually). I'm the same person in the real and online worlds. When I said I knew people who don't like the term, I meant people I know online. Actually, none of my local friends would know the joke. So me not using it online anywhere has a valid reason in this case.

I think you missed my point, perhaps I wasn't clear. What I meant is that offending people is easier to avoid if you know your audience. If you are posting something for the world to see it is an impossible thing to do.

Well the hobbyist culture guarantees it. You are also never going to see many photography enthusiast treat phone cameras on the vein of DSLR.

Meh. People who tend to get offended by it seem to be console fanboys. Pcs have greater flexibility and you can build powerful gaming rigs... get over it.

It doesn't mean someone is better as a human than someone else.

Honestly the expression itself doesn't bother me that much, it's the attitude that comes with it I have a problem with.

I kinda learned about it in my high school history class 20-odd years ago, along with the irony that Hitler himself didn't have the genetic qualifications to be part of the "master race".

I don't actually know if it's bannable as a joke, but I can see why they wouldn't want people using it at all: Joke usage still makes some people mad, and a few shitbirds might take note of this and start using it on purpose just to provoke that reaction. Nothing good comes of it, IMO.

I agree. But my point is, of course you don't know what can be offensive to people and it's impossible to refrain from it, but, in the case of the PC joke, I already know it can be offensive to a lot of people, including some of who I personally know. In this specific case, I won't use it. But yeah, it's different if you don't know if something can be offensive.

Well said.
Believe it or not, I'm actually stating my honest opinions. I thought that the original and use of "master race" was pretty well known and not someone anyone could really argue.

Your profile mentions you're in Germany -- I'm not sure if I offended you or not. I am not criticizing Germany NOW, but I would certainly criticize the Holocaust.

Believe it or not we in Germany discuss too often if it's allowed to make fun about Nazis.
I'm sick of this people who think they're the morality in person and want to stop other people to make fun about/with something with a "dark" context.
While it's allowed to make fun about Nazis in movies and series (in Germany), games were censored with ANY relations with Nazis at all.
That's censorship and the recent South Park game was a really good example that this censorship doesn't work at all.
PC master race is something I really can laugh about because they're objectivity right with their arguments and are against lying devs/publishers/manufacturers/reporters and want to help others as good as they can.
PC's are open, modifiable, cheaper, better and better than everything else in the market while consoles are restricted, overpriced, cheaply build and expensive because the company who owns the console set the rules for it and can not be broken.
Does it remind you of something?
If you see it with this context it makes more sense that it is PC master race and not console master race.
I would be offended with a "console of your choice" master race.
Consoles are the opposite of freedom, individuality and choice.
Nobody right in their mind can explain why it's ok as a tv show but not as a game showing Nazi symbolic and themes in it.
And for the 99,99% of all the stuff that's censored they're AGAINST Nazis or at least didn't glorified them.
But why can't we just joke about Nazis or even do something funny without bringing up the morality mace?

As an example this is totally ok as a regular tv show while the other one was criticized for it's insensitive touch of the subject.
At the end it's a choice if you're offended or not.

You cant choose your race.

A hardware joke is not in any way similar.

However, I do think it's a stupid term because most people who use it are morons. It's Youtube comments level drivel at this point.

To put it in plain language - I associate its use with obnoxious wankers at this point. Like an in-joke which everyone else is thoroughly tired of.

It does a disservice to PC gamers who aren't like that and causes friction. It's time it was retired and left to live out the remainder of its days in the darkness of Reddit and 4chan.

I don't use it, but i do find it hilarious on how people get mad over the satire. Video game epeen measuring should not even register on peoples radar as things to get pissed off at, it's quite telling of ones character when they do.

It was funny for me at first but the more it has been used the more it reminded me of some of the thinking espoused when PCs started being adopted by the masses.

Hmm. I've never made any sort of Nazi or Aryan race connection when I see it since I doubt most people are even thinking about it in that way. At least I hope.

I just find it annoying because PC elitism is annoying. I don't believe for a second that a lot of these douches that throw the term around on the internet are actually joking. They actually feel inherently superior to people who play games on non-PC platforms. Which is hilariously dumb at best.

Luckily GAF feels like an exception in that regard. Those people described above exist on here, but they seem to be a pretty small minority.

I mean the thing is that every time the word comes up it is mentioned that it is a bannable offense, but the person who used it is fanboy amd ussually gets banned for something else soon after, so I am still not sure of any real examples. It is more of a thing that people don't really use, and every time someone uses is because that person just doesn't care what others say.

It's rarely funny in any conversation and often toxic. I wouldn't miss the term, but it's probably not going away.

The PC master race is akin to being an atheist in the sense that both represent a very loud and annoying minority.

I kid I kid ;)

It's not even that far ahead these days, comparing some PC ports to some PS4 titles. (Especially if you're an AMD person for some reason)

Pretty much. I'm guaranteed to respect the opinion of someone who feels the need to use the term 100x less than if they don't.

Consider that system wars garbage is banworthy anyway, and "PC master race" is used for precisely that, it didn't even have to be offensive to anyone for it to be unwelcome. But the combination of these two things seals the deal completely.

Claims His or Her PC is better than consoles.
Cries about 65GB install and two year delay of GTAV for PC.

I love my PC and my Consoles and realize both offer different experiences and games.

doesn't bother me. what does bother me is having to be so damn 'politically correct' about everything these days. just gets worse with each passing day.

I completely agree with you.

This is just a different way of saying that you're tired of having to be respectful to other people.

I haven't come across many people who have used it seriously, but even as a joke past the original context in the Yahtzee video isn't really funny. It's especially not funny after 6 or 7 years of running into the ground.

I don't use it, but i do find it hilarious on how people get mad over the satire. Video game epeen measuring should not even register on peoples radar as things to get pissed off at, it's quite telling of ones character when they do.

It started out as satire, then was adopted by some PC gamers ironically, but eventually ended up being used unironically.

PC Gamer's review of Dragon Age 2 makes me uncomfortable.

What's funny is that the shitty Bioware writers unironically, explicitly and directly evoked the holocaust in that piece of garbage in one of those crappy sidequests with the DLC character. It's holocausts all the way down

No. It means he wants people to grow up and not take everything personally. Your feelings do not entitle you to censor the speech of others.

Saying that something someone said upset you is not censoring anyone. Those are, in fact, the consequences of free speech. You are perfectly welcome to say whatever you wish, but you have to deal with the responses from people who do not like what you've said. Free speech does not mean you can just spew hateful garbage and not hear from anyone who doesn't like it.

It's supposed to imply something about the attitude of PC only gamers. It's a joke, and like most jokes it isn't funny once someone explains it to you.
