PC Gamer: "PC Master Race" makes people uncomfortable

Not sure if this has been posted already but:

I'm offended by this.

24 pages of this shit. Really? I thought the most confusing part of the PC master race meme was whether Yahtzee was mocking PC gamers or not. It seems he was making fun of elitist PC gamers and they just reappropriated it.

I meant it as a dig. Some PC gamers I think have been using it unironically, but that's not what matters. What matters is that elitism was what turned me off to PC gaming, just a few short years ago. And that's what amazes me, in retrospect. I started leaning more towards console gaming because they were approachable, easier to use, and you didn't have to wade through as much bullshit to get to the point of actually playing the fucking games. That was where I perceived the future of gaming lay. There cannot possibly be a future, I thought, in a gaming platform that deliberately reduces and alienates its potential audience.

It has been posted and it is still intelectually lazy and really pointless. Maybe stop letting C rate celebrities think for you instead of coming up with an original contribution to the discussion.
What a useless quip.
Like if anybody else had said that it would carry more or less weight.

i agree with the general sentiment, though.

How on earth do people like you keep equating criticism to the systematic silencing of opinions?

If people bring to attention that a line of thought is repugnant, and a dialogue occurs which results in general opinion that said thought is wrong, that's not censorship, that's free speech in action.
I think there's a weird sort of idea in some people, like Brendan O'Neill, that by "The Freedom of Speech" it's "The Freedom of my Speech". And that any criticism or complaint about their speech is a violation of it, never taking into consideration that what they are also doing is a part of free speech. Either way, it's a phrase I'm growing sick of. Either completely misunderstood or claimed that it's threatened in order to scare people into supporting bigots.

It's just amazing how they all insisted it was just self-deprecating irony and the next moment get super excited about a T-Shirt unironically brandishing the "Master Race" moniker. There are a few people saying that it may be a bad idea to wear that in public, but way more (and more upvoted) posts asking where to get shirts like that and how they would wear them proudly in public.

But wait, there's more! The OP is a woman. The top comment is: "Congrats on your purchase of a woman, sentient t-shirt." I know it's the old reddit swaggadazzle, but it is still uncomfortably close to being sexist (esp. with so many awkward "you are really beautiful" posts on there). Oh, and the photograph is mimicking a pose very similar to Leni Riefenstahl's aesthetics. Might still be irony, but it is not really marked as ironic. But they are wondering how people could think that they are seriously identifying with the "master race" name.

now that there is a controversy, any chance /r/pcmasterrace loses their recommended steam curated page? Or does Steam usually not give in to this stuff?

I have a gaming pC and the Sony consoles, but I coin the phrase when joking around with people who understand the backstory of it. As for just saying it to refer to what I do, I don't because it's kinda dumb.

But as a black male, does the term offend me? No, I work in the media and I've heard and witnessed so much that I don't get bothered by it.

Let me give a very real example of a PC gaming issue.

I buy Grand Theft Auto IV from steam, my PC could run this literally without breaking a sweat, but first I've got to get past GFWL which is now a dead platform, meaning it rejects the product key, so I cannot save my progress.

Also despite the fact my PC vastly exceeds the recommended specs, performance is still weak even in quiet moments.

So "Master Race" and "superior in every way", not a hope in hell, it's a bad joke which gets worse the more I hear it.

Kappa

I have a really great gaming PC, but prefer to only use Big Picture Mode and actively avoid games with a KB/M interface.

So I guess I'm like the little brother who still needs to wear a child leash.

OK and we miss out on games like Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted, Forza, Heavy Rain and Super Mario Galaxy?

I think I know where I stand and I actually own a gaming PC.

The exclusive argument is so moot. Both consoles and the PC has exclusives, just because someone doesn't like the exclusives on one platform doesn't make the exclusives of another platform disappear.

Wait, because of this PC Gamer article now I'm going to see fedoras walking around in public with t-shirts that say "MASTER RACE"?

This fucking culture... jesus christ.

I would be quite surprised if Valve did something to piss off a subreddit that has hundreds of thousands of followers that basically worship them

Original system of release>>>>>>>>>>>Emulation

Also the PS3 architecture will be difficult to emulate due to the processor design.

You realize there is already a PS3 emulator that runs quite a few indie titles already at near full speed right? It's not 1080p MGS4 yet, but this is only a few years away.

Nonsense...pc gaming is as easy as console gaming.

And I say that from a 980gtx/ps4/XO/Wii U owner's point of view.

This is the flip side of the PC master race thing. The console warrior. Equally vapid, just as quick to come to idiotic conclusions, and prone to hyperbole.

Hey, why don't you give running GTA IV on your Xbone a shot, see how far you get.

The greedy, incompetent bullshit that a developer and a publisher do to screw over their customers has NOTHING whatever to do with the validity of an entire platform. This no more means that PC gaming sucks than the fact that Skyrim runs likes like camel ass on your PS3, and crashes and borks saves, etc means that the PS3 sucks.

GTFO with that shit, seriously.

BTW, I own an xbone but I don't play games on it, as I'm primarily a PC gamer. My friend sconvinced to buy ONE game - amster chief's ocllection on it so we cna play multi-player.

GREAT, QUALITY console experience that was!

i always picture a hippy from SF area sipping on his extra large mug with ironic statements written on it, a neck scarf even though its 80 degrees, with ear gauges, large rimmed glasses, skinny jeans, and with 3 tabs open to his favorite tumblr sites, writing on his macbook in a starbucks shop about he is triggered by the word "master race"

Create an offline profile and enter your key. GFWL is only an issue if you want to play online, but it doesn't block you from saving or anything else if you legitimately bought a game with it.

I picture this guy when I run into a console warrior on GAF:

Chanel Earrings - Good for turning guys on
Yes yes, he is really fucking wearing lip gloss. Good for sucking dick.

Well, it's good to see that you always imagine one of those horrible, sinful homosexuals everyone talks about whenever you see a "console warrior." Gosh, I can't imagine why anyone would give the PC Gaming Community the stink-eye for using Nazi terms now.

Original system of release>>>>>>>>>>>Emulation

Playing Smash at 4k60fps/1080p120fps is pretty bangin'. Got a Raphnet GC controller adapter too.

On topic: I can see why it would turn loads of people off, but the meme's been going on for so long that I would imagine that most people associate the phrase with annoying, outspoken PC fanboys on the internet, rather than Nazi stuff. Especially when the original source comes from satire like ZP.

Hmm, actually I linked to the wrong guido pic!

It more about douchebaggery and less about gay jokes. :(

But good on you, to continue that time honored tradition fo painting everyone with the same brush. Are you wearing the $500 sunglasses right now?

You've also missed my point.

This thread has turned into a pile on PC gamers now, by the likes of the guy I originally responded to. And all simply because a subset of our community decided to say F-you to imbeciles like Yahtzee, who critizise anything PC gaming related because it doesn't appeal to them personally, and so have taken on the moniker in a jokey fashion. And because an even SMALLER subseciton of the community uses it to be obnoxious.

Like the same doesn't happen in console gaming communities.
