PC : Grand Theft Auto IV, Who's playing it ? And how?

thinking about buying this.

Lowering graphics detail wouldn't bother me much, so I might give it a shot. I heard you need to install Rockstar Social Club and Securom, though. How annoying are these programs?

How intrusive is Securom?

1. For those who've already played this on 360 or PS3, do you think playing it on PC adds anything at all? ...IE: the mouse and keyboard support or enhanced visuals?

2. How would my system fair?

8800gt
E6600
4gig Ram
Vista32

Thanks again

I believe that there are more people per multiplayer match.

Can anybody tell me how the game would run on my computer after the new patches?

- Athlon 64 X2 2.41Ghz
- 3.25 GBs DDR2 800 RAM
- 8600GT
- XP 32.

I hope someone can tell me what kind of framerate I can expect with this setup before Steam deal ends.

For the love of God can anyone please tell me if the PC version of GTA IV supports any kind of quick save/quick load function? I DREAD the thought of having no mid-mission save points again.

If not, any word on whether a mod is coming that'll patch it in?

Like ass. Don't bother, your CPU just isn't up to it, sorry.

No it doesn't and, yes, it sucks hairy balls.

The graphics aren't the problem, its the load it places on your CPU that is taxing and none of the sliders affect that. For example, moving between 720p and 1080p has close to no affect for me, and I'm only using a 4850.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The game needs a quad core or a 3gz Core 2 Duo to get decent framerates. Anything lower and its just not worth the bother.

:( Not buying it for PC then! :lol

Fuuuck, I bought a relatively new pc end of 2007 and it's already outdated..

Edit: Forgot it was sooo long ago. August 2007 :lol

Bought it yesterday via Steam (30% off discount). The whole day to download the game, the whole night to download the patch. The whole morning to understand to be... guess what.

- Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50GHz / 2.50GHz [generic C2Duo @ 1.8GHz required]
- 3GB Ram [1.5GB required]
- NV 9500M GS @ 512mb [NV7900 @ 256MB required]
- Vista 32

DirectX and drivers updated to latest released stable versions.

I got bad framerate, and MAJOR issues, even with the lowest settings both in 800x600 / 1280x720, and yes, it's unplayable.

Alt-Tabbing gets graphics back, but as soon as I move few meters I get the same result.

For comparisons, Bioshock runs good with the same configuration in 1280x720 with everything set mid/high.

At what resolution? I have no problem playing at 1024x768 if Ican get around 30fps. I've tried the game in the past, without oatches, And with everything at max I'd get 18-20fps. I was wondering if the two patches had a 10fps boost, but I see it's not the case.

I hate when PC games are unoptimized.

Not saying that GTA4 is built right...but your system is pretty weak. Any laptops that are reasonably priced aren't going to perform well on most games.

Resolution makes very little difference, its the CPU that's the bottlenck. Anything from a 9600GT upwards is fine for the graphics side, but your framerates are going to be awful without a 3ghz Core or a quad of some description.

Sure is a lot of FUD being spread around here. I play on a 1.8ghz Core Duo just fine.

Well "just fine"" is a very vague statement. Given what I've experienced with a 3.5ghz dual core, I sure as hell would hate to play it with anything less. I'm a PC gamer, so I'm use to decent framerates, I don't want to go back to the days of an inconsistent 30fps, thankyou very much.

Bah, right around now is when I wish I didnt own a Mac. My quad 2.66 xeons just arent meant for this game apparently (not that they are gaming processors anyway). 5 gigs of ram and 8800gt just dont cut it with those processors :\

I was running on a 6400+ @ 3.4 and I was getting sub 30 fps outside constantly.
I just ordered a Phenom 2 940 BE just to get this game to run well.

Sorry, I have not explained myself correctly.

1920x1200 res + default settings = bad framerate and major issues > unplayable
1280x720/800x600 + lowering settings = major issues > unplayable
Other games in 1280x720 with max/med sets = much better performances than gta4

It seems the patch is causing these issues to several hardware configs. I'm downloading it again without patching, hoping it works.

---

I usually play recent games at 1280x720 / 1280x800 with everything maxed out or in mid/high combo in the worst scenarios, and I raise the resolution to 1920x1080 / 1920x1200 with older or not-so-demanding games.

Maybe your definition of "pretty weak" is "pretty different" from mine! :D

Um no, they'll run the game really well. If you have more than 2 processors, you're good to go.

Has oneone else been having problems with the opening credit sequence? The first time through, it didn't show the boat. Then, when the game started, all I could see were the streets. I screwed around in the settings which fixed the second issue but when I went back in and tried to start from the beginning, it straightup froze during the credit sequence....

So today I thought I'd start playing again and finally finish the game.

So I've installed the .2 patch and i have the 9.1 drivers for my hd4870 and now for some reason as soon as I leave the safehouse the shadows turn to solid black, everything is black and messed up.

gta4.jpg

Fun :/

the game runs pretty good for me at 1280x720 pretty much everything on high including textures. (q6600@2.8 hd4870 1gb)

When switching to 1920x1080 (monitors native reso) the pop-in is horrible!!...back to windowed 1280x720 for me!!

Super Sunshine Theft 4! :lol

From various trips to this thread, I've seen the main opinion go from horrible, to good, to horrible again.

Did one patch fix the game, then another screwed it up again?

I'd love to buy this, and there are video caps of the game running on PC and it appears to run very well. However, if it will be unplayable and buggy then obviously I wouldn't want to waste my money.

So, is ANYONE playing this without any problems and having a fun time with it?

Arghh, I am pretty sure my PC would destroy this game, but I don't want to support a game that provides horrible performance on other people's decent rigs. I am never giving my money to lazy port jobs.

Buy used.

Unfortunately, it's probably not worth it to purchase a used PC game. The online stuff is probably linked to a specific username that will have already been used. I'm not completely sure how it works with GTA4 though.

The expanded multiplayer in the PC version is garbage. I can never find a full server. Completely fucking missed oppurtunity on Rockstar's part. Would recommend any sort of no-GFW patch that is probably illegal and likely doesn't exist yet.

So basically it's the same as the console version then. I was thinking about getting the PC version just for the multiplayer but since Rockstar screwed that up too, I'll pass. It's really a shame too b/c when you do get a full game going, the multiplayer is actually very good (Cops N Crooks and Team Mafiya ). The funny thing is that implimenting a server list would've gone a long way into making the multiplayer experience more stream lined (at least in the console end)

you can't?? plenty of full/almost full 32 player servers when i've been playing, this is in europe. i wish they got rid of the cap though sa-mp is 200 player! even 64 would be good

online stuff would be inked to R* social club account wouldn't it? I've haven't touched multiplayer but I don't remember having to do anything unique.

I've tried to get a game half a dozen times. Nobody is playing anything besides deathmatch for me. Even then it is abysmal, I have been playing off peak you could argue, but that's not an excuse in my opinion.

Get a grey market import copy off ebay. Save a bit of cash, still get the new game, and Rockstar gets a good chunk less from your purchase as a penalty for the rocky port job.

You need more than 2 cores.

well i've never had a problem getting a game myself, not sure if its region locked or what? but at peak euro time its very busy

i do agree with the performance complaints to an extent, in that it shouldn't really require quad core or 512mb+ of vram. but having said that it doesn't require a powerful graphics card at all and once you do have those two it runs very well indeed or at least for me anyway which is all i care about :) 1080p, practically max except view distance and it NEVER drops below 30fps

one of the best games i've ever played

I must say that playing this game on its own default settings and being greeted by a framerate of around 5 - 10 fps, my heart sank quite a bit. :lol

After some minor tweaking, the game runs and looks brilliant. I haven't benchmarked it but it plays really well. At a guess I'd say between 35 - 40 FPS.

My specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
8GB DDR2
GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB

Admittedly things could be better, hopefully Rockstar release a patch sometime in the future to tidy things up a bit - in particular the game seems to be a bit too crash happy a times, although since changing the settings I haven't had as many problems.

With shadows turned off, the game flies. I get about 15 FPS boost witnout them and the game still looks great.

The second patch screwed up my game and doubled the loading times (and yes I know it reset the grapgics options when you install it). After that i just deleted the entire game. Fuck that shit.

with the exact same settings as before the game needs a bit more vram and looks better but it is bit worse in performance. I can handle this because the shadows now look great. And popups are minimized now too.

Have they got rid of the ugly ass dithering on the shadows then?

Since when has this game analog brakes and acceleration while using the Xbox Pad. I can remember you were not able to do this earlier. There was only GO or Stop.

that shadows off switch sure helps, average around 50fps @ 1080p all settings maxed except draw distance. still nowhere near bored of this game, one of the finest i've ever played
