PC : Grand Theft Auto IV, Who's playing it ? And how?

Come on, if they're actually working on it, you can't STILL give them shit. I mean, the interview is one thing, but if they actually patch the fuckups out, then that's what you want, right?

but most of the issues mentioned in their patch are irrelevant. they should patch that fucking social club bloatware out of existence.

God bless the piracy community.

Due to the retarded and broken SecuROM launcher I was unable to play my game for days and both Rockstar and SecuROM were hopeless and slow trying to fix my problem but the piracy community can actually get my legitamite retail copy working.

Now please lets forget about all this SecuROM BS in future so i don't have to go to such stupid lengths and risk getting a virus just to be able to play a game I payed £28 hard earned pound for.

News on the new Catalyst driver is great, looking forward to see what that does for my performance.

You know... Rockstar really needs to look into how internal QA is being done. Between this and the state Bully was released on the 360... they got issues.

Ha, I guess you didn't hear about the PC port then, apparently its even worse than the mess that was the 360 game, and won't even function if you've got more than 2 gigs of RAM.

After finally being able to spend time with the game, by God is it ugly, the jaggies and shimmering/dithering shadows make it the IQ look terrible, and enabling the filter gets rid of any small amount of texture definition there might have been. Whichever option you go with, you're sharply reminded why you got away from console gaming in the first place. Even with my CPU clocked to 3.65ghz I still can't hit 40fps, what a joke.

These drivers didn't give me any performance enhancement. I haven't seen any texture corruption, maybe that has been fixed

I wonder what went wrong, cause GTA 3, VC and SA are all brilliantly ported to PC, can't fault them really. Although SA was a bit dodgy until the patch came out.

those 2 games used renderware, which was also avaiable for the pc.

I think the problem is their own engine, because its so heavily multithreaded and not as optimized as it should.

I wonder what's taking the patch so long? If they got that retarded, "it's only 1% of users" logic out of their heads and are revising their list of things they planned to fix I'm all for it. Still, it's ridiculous that M$ has to be so involved, the patch could already be done but I'm waiting for their approval thanks to an integrated service from them I never even asked for.

The older games did have some annoying problems, but they were nothing like the latest game. I think the most annoying thing is the "Frame Limiter" feature. Why the hell would you need a frame limiter when the average pc out around that time had way better hardware than current consoles. On my AthlonXP 1700 with a Geforce 3 I could get like 40-50 fps playing the much better looking Mafia which was also a huge free-roaming game, GTA without the frame limiter turned off gave me all sorts of problems. Rockstar likes to release ports that aren't up to standard and then let either the consumers wallet, or time itself sort out their somewhat disappointing and now awful efforts.

I remember another problem with the old ports was sometimes bugs that had no business being in the consoles managed to make their way into the pc versions too. Even when they patched the games, the bugs still remained in some cases. Like Vice City has a bug where the revolver refuses to fire sometimes often getting you wasted on many missions. GTA3 had a messed up bug where if you saved over an old save file a certain gang would be missing so when you had to interact with the gang you couldn't because they were gone. This like the revolver gun doesn't always happen, but they are certainly there. I got the missing gang bug when I replayed 3 in anticipation of IV.

Only had one prob with it at the beginning. Their social club was down, so i had to go offline mode to start the game. But besides that, no probs whatsoever. I just used recommended settings and started the game

quadcore oc'ed at 3.6ghz
Radeon HD4870
4gb ram

kinda sad i can't run it on max...but pc ports of rockstar games were all had crud optimization, so w/e

I have Bully PC, and it works on my 32-bit Vista machine with 4GB RAM (3GB mapped). The only ridiculous thing about Bully PC is the performance...I can't even maintain 30FPS if I turn on 4xAA on my E6600 @ 3.0GHz, 8800GT @ 700/1025 machine.

The patch is out. The game feels smoother to me now.
I've been playing with traffic set to 100. Traffic jams in tolls, intersections, etc. Poor cops have no chance of catching me :D.

Ok, I'll start my game to download the patch. Hopefully it increases performance for me too.

erm, where to get the patch? ah, got it, fileplanet is the only source I found so far.

the new patch is mandatory if you want to play multiplayer. however it introduces a ton of bugs for anyone using a directinput device. also doesn't fix stuff like the memory leak.

Like, a wheel? Does GTAIVPC support wheels?? I forgot to ask that.

I hear ya dude..this is the problem with PC gaming lately.. lackluster ports.

I have a Qx9650 OC'd @ 4.6ghz via TT Cooler, 4GB DDR 3 ram, 9800 GX2 1gb videocard and i cant get a solid 60FPS at all... and this game does not even look anywhere as nice as Crysis does and GTAIV runs worse then Crysis!!! and Rockstar had a fucking grip of months to smooth shit out...looks to me the only thing they did was make the game harder to play on the PC when compared to the consoles.. ...this is uncalled for, i could see the game running like this if it were putting Crysis to shame at the same time..but come on now..

I took the chance and bit the bullet and bought GTAIV off steam..boy was that a mistake.

This is why i just about had it with PC gaming and all these high end PC's i use to love building for PC's aswesome cutting edge exclusives...now days, what do what got as PC's latest and greatest "cutting edge" exclusive game? Crysis and Crysis WarHead..thats it!!

Im sorry, as much as a PC enthusiasts i have been since my C64/Amiga 500 days... PC gaming is complete SHIT now days..i can honestly say without any doubt in side me that console gaming is much much better and flourishing waaaaaay more then PC is as a gaming platform

Its sad too because half the reason why i took so much pride in building high end PC's were for the performance results i could achive with the hardware i choose. Its like building your own Nascar Racer and taking it to the tracks to see how it performs and then tweaking the hell out of your system to get tip top benchmarks or to conquer a game like Crysis in getting over the 120FPS mark, etc *crysis is a bad example lol* but you get my point....thats part of the reason in why PC gamer enthusiasts spent the money they did..but when your only getting one fucking cutting edge pc exclusive game every two years... why the fuck does anyone want a high end gaming PC for when a 360 or PS3 is just cheaper, looks damn near as good if not better in some cases depending on teh game and developer and then we got the ease of use... things are quite fucked up right now for the PC as a gaming platform....sucks too.

But one good thing i can say is that im a "true gamer" i dont like fanboyism get in the way of avoiding other platforms..thats why i own them all..because they all offer somerthing the others dont..so if your a hard core gamer.. you gotta have the best of the best and from all platforums...correct me if im wrong :D

So I get the game running. I play a few hours and then try multiplayer- it's still broken. Playing peak time on weekend you expect to be able to find a deathmatch/team deathmatch game- but you'd be lucky. When I did get in I was disconnected because my PC was running too slowly several times, and then it crashed. Shouldn't do when you're playing with 3 germans out of a touted 32.

I lost my patience with the multiplayer considering I bought a 4850 to play it. What makes me laugh is that Microsoft are having an event this weekend where you can play some of the staff at Rockstar. I bet they can't even find a game themselves. I fear the multiplayer will never reach that critical mass because there are just too many hurdles to get into a multiplayer game. Number one being the current inability to self patch GFW in game, when it is a required component. If I worked at Rockstar I'd be really embarassed about the multiplayer.

Left4Dead, grumble.

why do you have a $1000 processor with an outdated graphics card?? 4.6ghz is a 24/7 overclock?? i don't know anyone who has one at that speed except for pure suicide runs/benchmarking and that's on custom water, TT cooler is an acronym for an air cooler?

How is a 9800GX2 outdated?

Also he is just being whiny. Happens in every PC thread.

TT = Tuniq Tower

9800gx2 is still a decent card in games that support sli and aren't vram limited i.e gta4 doesn't support sli at all and is massively vram limited

but it suffers greatly from microstuttering and 512mb is increasingly becoming inadequate for high res gaming

4.6ghz on an air cooler with a 130w cpu hahah, gimme a screen with hours of a cpu benchmark running alongside coretemp/realtemp

The patch is out and it's great! Fixed that missing texture problem and now I can get in some good play time in peace. People are also saying they got a minor boost in fps so you may want to give it a go.

It's not flawless, if you have a discussion with a character in public the textures might hop in and out as the camera swaps back and forward between the two. I'm running high rendering, medium textures. Could be why. It's acceptable anyway. I occasionally see the road texture hop in but yeah huge improvement to be quite honest.

The 9800x2 rocks pretty hard, especially for the games programmed to take advantage of multiple GPUs (like DMC4 and the upcoming RE5 and SFIV).

Indeed, this port is still built on top of a fine mess and it still shows, but at least they addressed some of the biggest issues with the port. They didn't even mention the patch actually did contain a texture fix. It's almost like they don't want to acknowledge they shipped the port with such a game halting bug.

just lower your settings to be in the yellow or even green area! That should fix the connection lost problems!

^^Nice!! As if the video wasn't awesome, that was one of the clearest videos I've ever seen on youtube. Felt like I was actually playing.

oh lord

Is the patch something you have to get from a site or is it like 360 games where the dashboard pops up and you download it from connected to Live?

Played the game finally for about 2-3 hours last night.. I'm not sure why everyone was so excited about the game in the first week after launch, since the start really hasn't captured my interest that much (but being a fan of the GTA series, i'll be continuing) and so far certainly nothing oscar worthy

Is it just me, or is the handbrake much less effective in this game than san andreas and vice city, and was that present in the 360 or ps3 version too?

One question I have though is why won't it let me choose my graphical settings? a few things are locked in place, despite being okay settings, i still wouldn't mind having a look at what the game would look like on future computers :P

If you expect anything oscar-worthy from a videogame, you'll be automatically disappointed.

The handbrake doesn't immediately throw your car into drift mode. You have to hold it for about 700ms if you're driving the Lamborghini clone, for instance.

I am playing the PC version for quite some time now and getting average 35FPS (1280*1024,16xAF, tried forcing 4xAA but it didnt work, 180.84 driver version. Superclocked 8800 640MB, E6600, 2GB). Strage things are happening though. Like, I set the rendering quality to highest and it did not affct my average FPS even a single bit. Textures are set at high (they take a total of about 600MB of video memory). I tried to find a sweet spot with distance visual settings but they make things werider. Like when I increase it, objects which are near become a little clear, but messed up objects appear far away. Its like they all are meshed and wired, a lot of aliased objects appear far away. So then I reduce it again and nearer objects start becoming meshed and alaised. Right now I am at a decent spot but still cant shed the feeling of alaised things. Shadows are totally messed up. The benchmark gave me about 39FPS at these settings and was super smooth.

Also, as noted through FRAPS, sometimes the FPS jump to a justified 60-70FPS (this is honestly the FPS I should be getting by seeing how bad the game looks) but it reverts back to 35-40 without me doing anything. I know this game has issuses, but did the consoles had the wired, alaised and meshed objects? Is there any plans by Nvidia or Rockstar to allow Anti-aliasing? Will these issuses be solved and are you people having these issues?

Also, even changing the resolution didnt have any effect on FPS. I tried settings it at 1024*768 just to check and my FPS didnt change even a single bit. What a messed up game.

Wow, is it really that bad for ATI cards?

I get better performance than that with my 8800GT.
Nah, you can get fine performance with an ATI card, just not on max settings like I'm assuming they're doing here. I can crank settings up quite a bit on my 4870 512MB and still get a steady ~40fps. I still prefer the look of the 360 version though, sure the textures, draw distance and AF are worse, but the PC version has no FSAA at all :/.
