Huh, some effort put into the store page and game package. Really drives home how much more content there is over the vanilla 360 version.

Was that PDF guidebook ever previously available in any form?

Runs great for me. It's a straight forward port, so don't expect resolution options or anything like that. Haven't had a chance to play any further than Stage 1. I had to rush off to work.

Is there a tutorial for the game?

Yes, it has how-to-play videos for every mode and every ship.

To get started off in Caladrius:

Your goal in each stage is to get as many chips as possible (the purple gauge in the bottom middle of the screen) to upgrade your elemental weapons. You're going to have a lot of trouble in the later stages without upgraded firepower. Focus primarily on the offensive weapon, which is the first in the list.

Each stage has chips hidden in specific locations, like destructible objects, destructible boss parts, and secrets. You earn chips by filling up your gauge in the lower left, which is done by killing enemies with elemental weapons (not the regular shot) and then collecting the pickups they drop.

In other words, don't conserve your elemental weapons. Use them every chance you get. Also, collect green crystals as soon as they show up on screen - they recharge your elemental weapons, but they get weaker as they gradually change color to yellow.

Edit: I got confused about the gauge in the bottom middle. It lets you collect orange fragments to earn extra lives.

Man... I've been playing this opposite to what you suggested lol.

On another note, currently updating the first page for the New Year.

Finally got a gaming PC that can play any shmup. What are some underrated shooters on steam that I should look into? I have Crimzon Clover, Eschatos, Mushihimesama, Dodonpachi, Deathsmiles and Dariusburst but I've played most of these on consoles.

Probably the exact opposite of "underrated" but Ikaruga.

Also grab Strania and Raiden IV.

Mecha Ritz and Battle Traverse.

Mecha Ritz and Battle Traverse.

Well, Battle Traverse is not on Steam...

My recommendations for underrated:
- RefRain. Clean, slick visuals, standout soundtrack, and more complex than usual gameplay loop.
- Revolver360. Unique presentation and rotation mechanic, with a fully 3D world and many branching paths. Shorter than usual, but packed full of mini challenge missions.
- The Hurricane of the Varstray. Fast-paced score attack game where you ram packs of enemies over and over again, which never gets old. Six playable characters and twelve stages.
- Kamui. RayForce clone that perfectly captures the spirit of the original. Still visually impressive despite playing at 640 x 480.

Vector Strain is awesome. Get it. It's one of my favourite shmups on Steam.

Great news! I thought it looked quite good from the videos but wondered if I should get it since there seems to be almost nobody talking about the game in shmup circles so I was a bit skeptical.

If you like Eschatos, you will probably like Judgment Silversword.

edit: eXceed 2nd and 3rd are good too. You will most likely have to follow these steps to make them work properly tho. The former has the same polarity system Ikaruga has and the latter is closer to a CAVE game. I wouldn't bother with the first shmup in the series unless it is being sold in a 3-pack in a Steam sale, which happens semi-regularly.

Here are some more that I feel deserve more attention.

Danmaku Unlimited 2
RefRain
Mecha Ritz
Battle Crust
Sora
Valkyrius Prime

Thanks again everyone.

Space Moth DX is on sale for $.50 cents on Steam right now. Fun game, very colorful and reminiscent of Mushihimesama. Definitely worth that price!

Ghost Blade HD announced for Steam/XO/PS4/WiiU

Never played the original, but from what I read its been criticized for being laggy and too easy.

The aesthetic and visuals are very appealing to me so I hope they've responded to the criticisms for this port. It could be quite good.

Also, don't see many shmups coming brought over to all consoles these days!

Oh yeah, this game. Looking pretty oddball, especially those bosses! I like it!

Seems like the shots in different directions may be separate buttons?
