Pentiment - Reviews Thread

Right now, a PC can play everything an Xbox can + play some PlayStation exclusives + everything a PC can do. PlayStation is the only console in the business pushing gaming with big budget AAA.
Are you BryanK'S new account? Rofl. I don't understand the 'You can play Xbox games on PC' like it's a somehow a bad thing, or cheapens the console. What difference does it make to average Joe Gamer? I know tons of gaming friends who don't want / can't afford / don't have the space for a proper gaming PC or laptop. A good game is a good game, regardless of what platforms its available on.

Its also just not true. Microsoft is in fact making and publishing AAA games. Just cuz they're also on PC doesn't mean they're not Microsoft (and therefore Xbox) games.

On topic, really excited to play this. May be my 'slow day at work' game.

OT:

This game *looks* good, but I have been burned already this year from a heavy narrative/story focused "game" with Immortality (easily the worst thing I played this year). Going to wait to see what folks here think before I jump in. Still need to finish Sonic on PS5 and Signalis on my Xbox anyway.

It would be nice if MS would release a AAA title sometime soon. These are great, but they're filler. It's like Netflix trying to survive off of Sponge Bob re-runs. My patience is wearing thin.

Do not care about this game. Hopefully High on Life makes a splash.

I'm kind of glad I haven't started Ragnarok yet. Hoping they patch that nonsense.
The funny thing is that if you've played Tomb Raider, Horizon: FW, and Uncharted, you understand how the gameplay works. Why all of this wasn't handled in a tutorial section, I don't know. But it's annoying.
 
I fired this up but ended up shelving it for now. I have like 45 minutes till I gotta work and this game seems like it's gonna need more of my attention so I'll check it out after my shift. I'll tell ya what though, it gets bonus points off the rip for letting me select fonts and more importantly text size, thank you Obsidian 🙌
 
Just started this. It's beautifully animated with great ambience/music, and it's well written, but the sound effect as the text appears on screen is way too grating. Turned it off almost immediately. Otherwise, I'm enjoying it so far.

I am going to turn that off too. It was cool at first, but enough is enough. It's like nails on a chalkboard now.

Microsoft doesn't release too many one and done AAA games. There is tons of AAA development going on at Microsoft. Just this month; Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves and Microsoft Flight Simulator received large updates. Earlier this year, Flight Simulator (Top Gun) and Forza Horizon 5 (Hot Wheels) received large updates and Sea of Theives is near the end of a long adventure saga that has lasted for months.

We all know that Microsoft has new AAA games coming out in 2023, so complaining about no new AAA games in November of 2022 doesn't really change anything and is stating the obvious.

You already know MS plans for AAA release. Where's the sense in popping up in the review thread for a game to proclaim you have no interest in it and then complain about stuff you already have the answer for?

Also, a 15 hour game with tons of replayability can't really be described as 'filler'. Let's use words correctly.
 
This was the first game I downloaded after renewing Game Pass last week. I'm trying to stick with it and push on through the first hour so far, but man it's slow going during this part of the game. I forgot all about this game while plowing through High on Life, but I plan to put a lot more effort into it as a palate cleanser between intense Prodeus sessions.

I've made it as far as the church so far and have been talking to everybody I meet. I expect a lot of these discussions will start affecting gameplay some time soon, as I've already made 3 or 4 choices in regards to my education and specialties.
 
3 GOTY so far.

This was the first game I downloaded after renewing Game Pass last week. I'm trying to stick with it and push on through the first hour so far, but man it's slow going during this part of the game. I think if it ain't hitting after the big event then it just may be a wrong time/place/game sadly for you. The ending and themes are so on-point.

The choices of education/specialities do matter but they may actually not all the time which i find refreshing. there was a nice explanation where Sawyer said that the choice of response based on your choice of personality/skill shouldn't be the 'best' one all the time; something that you seen in other games.
 
start is bit off putting, stay for 2-3 hours and it gets real good.

this was a blast on atmosphere and story side.
gameplay is severely lacking though.
wish they would have just gone full on adventure-genre.
game is basically begging for it.
 
I dumped this game earlier today. I absolutely can not stand interactive stories that force my hand. What's the point in playing this like a game if I could have the same impact on a story by just reading a book? This title shouldn't be as on-rails as it is, and I should be allowed some modicum of choice or I just don't see the point in "playing" it.

One example: Early in the game the Drucker family invites me for dinner and I gladly accept. Later on some royal loser invites me to dinner and I say no, but he ignores me and says I will go eat with him anyway. When dinner time finally arrives I decide to blow off the royal loser's invite and go eat with the Druckers, to whom I've already given my word. So I scamper on over to their house at dinner time and lo and behold the stupid door is locked, with no signs of life. And apparently my only real option is to go eat dinner with the royal loser that has single-handedly turned Pentiment into a book instead of a game. Why are the Druckers not where they're supposed to be when they're supposed to be there? Why even bother pretending I have a choice in the matter when I don't? This game already offers so very little, how can it not even respect my choices?

I guess I'll wait for the movie to see how this one plays out.

You always get 1 dinner choice. You have to pick who to eat your meals with and there's always multiple possibilities. Sounds like you're still near the beginning. Im not surprised that the game isn't for everyone.

There are a couple of fixed story points (that dinner is one, and there is some later down the road) that you have to go through for the story but that's different to 'not having a modicum of choice', there is enough choices in my opinion to each experience unique but it's fine.

There is a ton of choice in the game. I keep hearing about stuff that I never saw in my playthrough.

That one point you are talking about is one of few instances where you have to do as game asks you to.

And it's well worth to go there for some exposition.
 
Just finished my first playthrough (works flawlessly on steam deck).

I really enjoyed my time with the game overall. It's obvious that a lot of research went into this but I found the writing to be sometimes inconsistent, with dialogue options or behaviors at odds with the setting (too modern). Just a nitpick though. I'll definitly play it at least a second time, just to see how different choices may affect the story.

Exactly, it's early in the game and even the game with the greatest freedom will have to take away your choice to go where it needs to sometimes.
I made the same choice as you to keep my word to the Druckers and got the same result. Didn't drop the game for this, it turned out to be a great game anyway. Your expectations are excessive and unfounded.
