Persona 4 |OT|

Thanks, SoL. These sorts of crafting mechanics and fusion things are the points in RPGs where I become like a helpless child. I don't know why it's so difficult for me to wrap my head around these types of play mechanics, but I've just never been good with them.

I just bugged my brother to print off two guides from GameFAQs for me to have on hand when playing, so hopefully that will help me out a little bit with these things and keep me from blowing all my SP when I'm in a crunch.

By "those types" you mean someone who has only played the JP version? Then yes, I am.

I'm not saying the English VA is bad. It's just too weird for me.

It's weird watching the anime in Japanese too after playing it in english. I guess its just whatever people get used to.

Atlus does have probably the best localization team next to the MGS series though.

Okay, so I'm in the first few days of Golden Week now (early May).

I'm still really liking the game so far, which is pretty significant since it's a JRPG. I don't know if it's the presentation, the characters, or what, but there's just something about this game that makes me want to play it.

I did the second run of Yukiko's castle, and I was amazed at how much easier it was with a fourth member and already knowing the weaknesses of everything. It helped that some of the later enemies never appeared, but the new boss gave me a run for my money. Really glad I have the ability to revisit locations, since I got a quest requiring stuff from enemies at Yukiko's castle.

While I still don't understand the Persona fusion stuff entirely, I think my grasp on it is getting somewhat better. That, and how the social link stuff ties into it more. This will probably be something I never fully overcome, but that's why I chose to play on Beginner when I did this.

The combat has really grown on me, since I have people that have abilities now, and our weapons/armor don't suck that badly. The new stuff with the Arcana Chance is a really nice addition too, and it always becomes a much bigger ordeal for me when it comes up, hahaha.
I just wish Teddie would shut up once in a while during the fights...

Also, I will never trust Teddie. There's just something really unsettling and suspicious about him that I will never let go of. I have a feeling he's going to tie into all of the events that have been going on at some point, but I won't let Atlus get the better of me! I DON'T TRUST STUFF WITH EYES THAT BIG.

The two things I hate about this game so far are-
1. I lose track of time playing it. This is my own fault, but I only meant to play 2 hours last night. I stopped after 4...
2. I hate how most of the social links or courage/expression/knowledge stuff forces you into a YES or NEVER situation, when you aren't even prepared to make a choice. I want to see what all is available to me, and it's annoying that some things become closed off to me afterwards because of it. Like when I had the option of eating the Miso in the fridge, I said no because I wanted to see what all else was available at home, but then option to eat the Miso was removed when I went back. Luckily, I had saved right before it, but it's just annoying.

Looking forward to my next viewing of the midnight channel.

Ack, time for the dreaded double-post!

Okay, so I'm on May 15th (or was it 16th?) now, and spent the last two in-game weeks doing social stuff.

I can't believe that just doing all the social stuff for nearly 2.5 hours kept me wanting to play. I basically just got done forcing myself to stop. I have also consumed so many dangerous sounding things from the fridge that I'm shocked my character hasn't died yet, hahaha.

Sort of exciting having to worry about whether or not my knowledge would be a high enough level to pass the midterm exams or not. I pulled off getting to level 3 on the saturday before the test. Whoo!
A little bummed that I lost out on an entire week's worth of things because of how they formatted the testing. It was kind of funny that all the random questions from before ended up being the test.

I worked on raising my social link with Chie, while I was at it. Yousuke and my clubs have suffered, as a result, but I think it has been worth it. She's like a level 5 now, and I've been pushing the game towards her as my character's romantic person. Seems to be working, so I'm glad in that regard. I was worried it was trying to force Yukiko on me because of how the game was playing out earlier.
Definitely going to show some TLC to Yousuke and the clubs next chance I get, though. I mean, I went to hang with the Fox (cool guy, by the way) before I met up with Yousuke again! Poor guy.

One of my biggest gripes, still, is how you get forced into some of these time-changing events. I've been saving way more often than I want to, in fear of accidentally initializing an event that I don't mean to. Luckily, most of them have played out for the best, but, every once in a while, it happens before I was finished talking with people/doing things.

The mystery of the Midnight Channel continues! So, we know it's Kanji, but the connection eludes my investigation team. Oh yeah, and Kanji seems like a nice addition to the cast. We've been a little short on crazy.
Personally, I'm starting to think the victims are entirely "random," in the sense there is no connection at all. They simply appear on tv, and that makes them the next in line. I really hope there is some connection that will play out later, but that's all I've reached so far in my own observations. Not much, but better than just repeating what everyone else said, like Chie did!

I'm "jonesing" for some combat next time I play (and maybe a riddle, c'mon funky student). Feels like an eternity since I saw Teddie or a shadow. I just hope I'm not going to regret my inventory stocking skills... I suppose the Fox selling me SP in the dungeon (yeah, I looked up what the heck that first encounter meant) is nice and all, but what a price!

Persona doesn't have the usual feel that most RPGs make me turn away from. I think if more RPGs were in the same vein as this, I would be a much more die-hard fan of the genre. Quickly becoming one of my biggest surprises in gaming, and I'm so glad I decided to take the plunge and buy this.
That theme song gets stuck in your head so badly... haha

Oh man, that sounds awesome. I really hope that becomes available over in the states.

So, I'm pretty sure I'm at very early JULY. Can't remember, as it's been several days since I had the real time to play.

Kanji's dungeon was rough for me. I had to try it twice because the enemies were dragging me over the coals. Luckily, after leaving from the first run, I was able to get some MUCH better weapons. I think that might be my tactic from now on- go as far as possible on the first mandatory entry, get tons of things to sell, leave, make some great weapons, and finish the dungeon at a later date.
Well, it also didn't help that I was collecting stuff for quests in the old place before investigating Kanji's dungeon and had an arcana card give me full HP, but give everyone 1SP. That pretty much wrecked any chance I had at real progress in Kanji's place. Definitely going to avoid arcana cards when possible now, haha.

The boss fight was a tough one too. It took me around 40 minutes to finish, and I didn't even fully figure out my tactic until nearly 20 minutes in. I ended up using my protagonist (with the Saravosita or something persona) to heal my entire party, use Chie and Yousuke as my attackers, and alternate Yukiko as a healer/attacker when the time presented itself. I didn't even realize that Yousuke had such a great stat nullifier for all of the boosting the boss got until like 15 minutes in. I was mad at myself because I gave Yukiko more SP before the battle than him, assuming she would be my healer, but I ended up primarily healing off my character. Oh well, I made it out alive, and I feel wiser!

I have to say, I'm a little disappointed that they brushed aside Kanji being gay for "I just wanted people to accept me." I mean, it's still an important issue, but I thought it would be pretty interesting to see a homosexual character portrayed as the rough, tough kid. Kanji is still very enjoyable, though, and he reminds me of a mix of Zoro and Luffy (from One Piece). Cracks me up how he is never paying attention during the talks.
And them taking Kanji to Teddie for the first time really got me, haha. Kanji wanting to pet him, and the thing with the glasses got hearty chuckles from me.

The camping trip has been one of my favorite parts of the game, from a humor standpoint. It was almost cringworthy at one or two points, but it was still very funny. Also, I'm pretty sure Yousuke is going to grow up to be a pedophile... That swimsuit part, haha. Just a little uncomfortable.

Every time a new character for the party is introduced I resent them, but the more I interact with them the more I want them on my team. I'm starting to feel that way toward Rise, and I really liked how they presented her disappearance. The chasing of the peeping tom guy was great, but I couldn't help yelling at them to leave someone there at the Tofu shop. Who would have guessed she's gone now?!

The investigation team is investigating stuff for Teddie to use to track down Rise at the moment, so I'm looking forward to the new dungeon. Time to keep refining my dungeon tactics!

I want this game to never end. : (

I really wish I could go through again what you're going through

Keep playing.

Also note which arcana do what. This is Megaten, everything has a use.

I'm trying my best, coach!
I've started to feel like I've kind of got a better grasp on the arcana stuff (at least fusions), but the arcana chance stuff has been harder to keep up with. Probably need to start writing it down or something.

I just remember that Chariot has been the least consequential (good or bad) so far, of what I've gotten. Pretty sure emporer was whether or not I have advantage more commonly or if enemy does... And death is the worst one ever. Never again. NEVER.

On a side note, what exactly does "megaten" mean? I assume it's terminology from the older SMT games.

Shin Megami Tensei means True Goddess Reincarnation.

I can't express how much I love the feeling of being, like, a real group of friends in Persona 4, so when the choir cut in I nearly broke down.

Just bought this album. So much better than BMD: Reincarnation. Super impressed.

That's not even the thing with me. It's not about getting used to it or anything. With MGS I first played the English version, and playing it in Japanese wasn't that much of an adjustment, it was about what I expected. Over the years though I started gravitating towards the JP VA because Akio Ohtsuka remained consistently awesome, while David Hayter was increasingly becoming a parody of himself. But I digress.

I speak Japanese and have lived in Japan for a time...I just can't so callously detach the dialect and mannerisms from the setting and culture that created them. It's not about acclimation, it's just the way I see things. It's the same with any form of localized media with strong cultural association.

I'm honestly just a little surprised by the aversion most people seem to be having to their exposure to the original VA, and having my viewpoint, which I think is pretty reasonable and rational, dismissed as me simply being "that type" of person, of which I assume implies meaning "weeaboo" as it usually does in these cases.

Atlus has a great localization team, but I find the cherrypicking of mannerisms and formalities in the NA script to be kind of strange and offputting.

As much as I appreciate whomever uploaded this music to Youtube, the titling is horrible. I have no idea what song I'm about to listen to until I actually start listening to it if I'm going by related/suggested videos, which is the fastest way to do it.

I'm liking the new music though!

I've think I've spent just as much time listening to and searching for Persona music on youtube than I have playing the games.. That's saying something.

This is great. I love P4 dearly, even more than P3, and back when they said they weren't going to do an enhanced version like P3:FES, I figured that was that, everyone would move on to P5 and these characters I love so much would slowly be forgotten.

Now theres a fighting game, an anime, an enhanced version coming, sweet new mixes of the music, it's like P4 will never die!

So glad I bought that CD now, those remixes really should be included in The Golden during a few specific scenes to add to the atmosphere. I'll Face Myself would be fantastic for a new secret boss if the game were to include one.

Who is selling it?

You could try Otaku.com or CDJapan. The former is my go to site for imports.

Anyways, I love the arrangement of "specialist ". 0_0 It might be my favorite track off of the album.

Thanks. Sadly, that's too rich for my blood. I'm surprised Atlus doesn't release OSTs through Amazon mp3 store. They have some kind of distribution deal for games already - selling me songs at the same place seems like a no-brainer.

Square releases all of their stuff on itunes, and I've bought a fair number of songs.
