Persona 5’s PS4 share features are permanently disabled

What does Atlus get for doing this? , i dont get it...

Control. They just don't get the internet in general and social media in particular. They are as bad as Nintendo at takedowns on youtube content. Never mind that the Network features of P5 could basically be used to piece together a round 1 full clear guide just by pressing the touchpad 2-3 times every calendar day, nobody else is allowed to create online guides to boss fights or social events. Atlus wants full ownership and control over all the media about their games that goes out over the internet. Nobody else gets to come along for the ride.

It would make a bit of sense if they were only blocking story elements, but left open side activities and dungeons. But blocking everything whole cloth comes of as either a lack of dev resources (didn't want to code/test all the flag triggers) or a clumsy business decision.

I would be legit astonished if the share functionality of the PS4 was any harder to enable than a few checkboxes in the SDK.

I can't stress this enough.

This is RIDICULOUS.

Essentially they're hurting people who aren't big enough to shell out the money for a "real" streaming setup (capture card, good PC, etc...). Those people are absolutely fine and can bypass this nonsense.

My brother watches me play games... this has been a thing for as long as I can remember. He and I were incredibly excited for P5, but now I don't know what to do.

I'm assuming Shareplay is also blocked?

In a practical, realistic sense, nothing. Companies don't make these decisions because there's a legitimate, well-considered benefit to them; they make them because human decision making is driven primarily by fear of loss and if you don't have a corporate culture that reigns in this kind of idiocy you get mid-level execs pushing self-destructive policies like this out of concern for imaginary problems.

Atlus to P5 fans: If you don't like it, suck on mah toe.

I have just as much right to complain about Atlus's decisions as they have to make them.

If you don't like it, take it up with a mod.
I never said people weren't allowed to complain, I'm simply saying that people act as if this is a morally wrong decision that is done to actively harm people, which is silly. If you are affected by this, don't buy the game. I'd highly encourage any one for this game or any other they take issue to, don't buy it. That's the purpose of the free market.

There are no words to describe how illogical this statment is. Final Fantasy 15 is the biggest current JRPG and it is "Solely a single-playthrough story" and SE did not block share features.

When you think NeoGAF spoiler tag lists is extreme here comes Atlus with this.

Edit: and what's worse is that the block will continue.. I don't get it.
lets be fair here...ffxv didnt have a story to spoil :kek:

Its easy to get though, even when it doesnt make sense. Youtube has scared a lot of developers into thinking tons of people are watching games that would buy them otherwise. Blocking share functionality is the same as PC developers implementing archaic DRM thinking that pirates will actually buy their game.

Atlus is completely blanked on the more likely reaction to allowing sharing, in that more exposure for your game will equal more sales, and those that are just going to watch it on youtube wont change.

Talk about using a nuke where a scalpel would do.

I'm suspect this has little to do with spoilers, than some executive at the top worried about sales.

FFXV even encouraged you to upload screenshots and it was fun.

Which is strange because Atlus has put in some interesting network features. For instance, I thought the online polls in Catherine were a fun addition and quite innovative for a Japanese company at the time (who in aggregate took a long time to "get" the internet and network features).

Yeah I'm sure the actual feature implementation is not hard. I'm just assuming that for every section of your code you want to flag, you'd have to wrap those in StartBlocking and StopBlocking calls. Then a QA has to make sure those are all triggering properly. More of a time issue than diffficulty issue.

Well, yes it's a shitty move from Atlus, but people going all "yeah f* you Atlus, let's all record the game and spoil it entirely on YT, and I'll push people to watch walkthrough on YT" are sooo dumb.
Yes it's a stupid move, but why would it makes you want to watch walkthrough/put walkthrough on YT? Does it make the game bad? The story? The characters? The game mechanics? And all that stuff? You know, the stuff that matters? Come on people, keep your rebel energy for a true cause.

Of course it doesn't, but we will see if they want to continue the facade of making it about spoilers if and when they go after Youtube and Twitch streams on Tuesday.

Just like region lock on their fighting game.
Which was still infuriating.

Holy shit people are defending this...

Atlus fans are on par with Nintendo when it comes to drinking the kool-aid. There's absolutely no reason why practices like this that negatively affect costumers should be defended by people unless you're getting paid to PR for them.

I swear Atlus live in this sealed bubble where the last 15 years of the game industry didn't touch them.

You just want to shout 'what year is it!?'

Yep, this sucks.

Tales of Zestiria and Berseria did this too.. I ended up getting Zestiria on PC instead of PS4 just so I could take screenshots.

Don't really have a choice with Persona 5 besides a capture card.

i'm uncanceling my preorder, buying an elgato, then uploading the full playthrough to youtube and am going to promote my channel everywhere i can now.

Why don't they learn from SE then. A video game japanese publisher too.

If assholes outthere wanted to ruin the game for everyone blocking this feature will not stop them.

Feedback and discussion are also key factors of the 'free market' the only option is not 'shut up' and buy or don't buy it. People can buy it and voice their displeasure as much as they want to. 'Free Market' capitalism doesn't really apply to copyrighted material in the first place anyway.

If this were a 'free market' I'd just go and buy the product from someone without such a restriction. Since that's impossible the next best thing is to provide feedback about the restrictions negative impacts

That was the funniest thing about the lock on berseria and zestiria, like lol mother fuckers I have a print screen key, what are you gonna do now?

when people started drinking that "entitled gamers" shit a few years ago is when I noticed this trend. Developers arent entitled to your money when they dont put out a product you want, and even once you spend $60 on said product, it doesnt mean you have to accept and like everything about it. Speaking up is standard consumerism and capitalism.

The hilarious part is that they're so inconsistent. P4G allowed screenshots, you can post whatever you want on Miiverse when it comes to their games.

The "but spoilers!!!" excuses some people are using to defend this went out of the window a long time ago.

Or an entire board of stupid executives worrying stupidly about a non-problem. Probably nobody under the age of 30 is allowed meaningful input at Atlus, because someone in that position could tell them that Scott Cawthon didn't lose sales of Five Nights because of Youtubers. Mojang didn't lose sales of Minecraft because of Youtubers. Battlegrounds, CS:GO, Hearthstone, MOBAs and Overwatch aren't losing money because of how popular they are to watch on Twitch. And the list goes on. Allowing your customers to engage with your product via Social Media is just good business. And Atlus is not run by people who care to recognize this.

What is the point of life if not to take screenshots?

>Menu
>Quit
-Are You Sure?
>Yes

now am dead please help

What's the point in doing that if you've got 8 left?

Oh Japan, never change.

No wait, actually please change.

Okay, this made me laugh.

Friggin' preach.

Also if they really gave a shit about spoilers, P5 would of been a simultaneous worldwide release.
Or at least close.

Not A 6 MONTHS delayed release in the west!!

This is absurd when the whole game was spoiled half a year ago!

I know it's annoying but this comment is somewhat stupid.

Do you take pictures every day in life? If no, do you want stop living right now?

yeah i take pictures of lab results every day as a backup so that i dont fuck up a report, those reports help save lives so it would be pretty shit if i didn't take pictures to help me out

the only stupid comment here is your insane leap of logic

So what, older systems didn't even have a share feature. And the game's being released on PS3 as well, which doesn't have share features. So why give the same version of the game, just on a different console, different access to sharing stuff?

this is some 1990s-Squaresoft-not-giving-review-copy-to-online-reviewers-because-they-thought-they-were-pirates type shit

just... heads in the sand
