Well, maybe? But you can see a shadow/demon knight down at the end of the hall when he's speed-stealthing, so I kinda doubt this is part of the Velvet Room. Especially since when we see him in VR he's chained up.

Ah you mean the stealth section.

Could be one of the side-quests variation you can do in dungeon.

Maybe that is the opening of the game, or it could be that they got rid of your allies following you as it wouldn't work with the faster movement.

That'd be lame, especially since that sneaking part shows the MC kinda warping into a shadow to dash towards a new hiding spot. They could just have the party members do exactly that to warp back to the MC if they can't keep up due to bad pathing.

Or have good pathing.

To anyone else looking to get into the series and you don't own a vita, Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 are both $9.99 each on PSN. Yes, it's okay if you don't play Golden.

Looking at the map they have laid out on the table in the cafe, it looks like that could be the casino area. There's a big circular atrium on the map which would line up with the chandelier area we see. There's also photos of what appear to be the same person scattered on the table...what's the objective? Robbing them? Stealing their persona? Or is this a demon in disguise, taking human form?

Hey, saw this avatar posted earlier in the thread and haven't seen anybody use it.

Anyone got that one? I really dig it, but I don't want to step on anyone's toes if they already grabbed it.

I don't think the MC is a blank slate/self-insert, or at least to much less a degree compared to P3/P4 even if he's silent. I mean the dude in the trailers just oozes personality, and I'm sure we'll see that in the dialogue choices we get.

Atlus probably realized that when the inevitable expanded world P5 stuff comes out they'll have to give him a personality anyway lol.

I saw video earlier of the part of the stream from last week when they played the trailer. Jun Fukuyama talks then the trailer plays and then Fukuyama says a bit more and it's done.

It seems a little much and definiteky surprisingly charismatic to be for a blank slate character.

Edit: And Hashino said around New Years they've been working really hard on the protagonist.

I feel like everything they're showing and saying hints at much more defined protagonist.

It'd be interesting if they were indeed hunting a demon/shadow because currently we don't know if this Persona game will have "two worlds" again, like Tartarus in P3 and the TV world in P4. In P2 the demons just roamed the regular world so if they are hunting a demon in an actual casino that would imply demons are in the regular world of P5 too. Would also make sense that the intro shows characters in their Persona form bouncing around the city.

But then again the dungeon they showed looked kinda like it could be a casino so maybe they access that dungeon from the casino? Not sure.

Those wondering over the last pages what game to get and all that, here's my opinion.

- Start with Persona 3 or Persona 4. They're much more welcoming for someone new to them in 2015 than Persona 1 and 2. They're also likely to be more in-line with what we can expect from Persona 5, although the trailer does seem to include elements from those past titles too.

- Now, deciding between P3 and P4 can be tough. I started with Persona 4 personally and played Persona 3 after and loved it. Both are self-contained stories but there is a short cameo in P4 that you can enjoy better if you've played P3 first, but nothing major.

- Persona 4 Golden is the most welcoming of games. Widescreen/resolution/streamlined gameplay and more. It also has some extra content and is overall the best Persona game in my opinion. If you can't play Persona 4 Golden because you don't have a Vita or PS TV, then you can get the original Persona 4 instead on PS2 or via the PSN Store on PS3.

- Once you've played Persona 4 and you know you like it and want more, then you'll be more willing to not throw your controller out the window when you get killed in Persona 3 FES and forgot to save so you lost an hour of progress. That does not happen in P4G - you restart on the last floor you were. Persona 3 is a great game but the dungeon crawling part is rougher around the edges. Some of my friends decided to play on Easy as such, others played on Normal.

- So when you want to choose between Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable, the main differences are that P3FES is for home consoles and you can walk around the 3D environments, has better character models, it has cutscenes, etc. On the other hand, Persona 3 Portable was a PSP port without the 3D environments. As such it has more of a visual novel presentation outside of dungeon crawling. To make up for that though, many gameplay elements were improved. There's also the choice between playing as the male protagonist or as a female protagonist.

- Also, there's no grinding involved if you just beat the enemies you come across and don't run from everything. Especially in P4 (and P3 on Easy). When you're stuck, fuse new Personas. Have some for different situations. If you're getting blasted by a boss' Fire attacks, don't keep rolling with a Persona that's weak to Fire. If you want to heal, switch to a Persona that has healing skills. The game is called Persona for a reason. It's relevant both thematically AND gameplay-wise.

It wouldn't, but I'm pretty sure the guys in the trailer are casino security. They carry themselves more like agents than mall cops.

I don't think they're casino security simply because of the helicopter that we see right before. That has to mean something. Reminded me of P4AU helicopter scenes. So possibly Public Safety agents or Kirijo Group members.

Thays a good point, yeah. Those Agebts are definitely just arriving at the casino.

The narrator introducing the trailer? If he's the one who actually voices the main protagonist, having him mostly mute throughout the game would be such a waste.

I should really try to get into this series. Especially since I have unplayed copies of 1-3 + FES -_-

I feel like from the story hints we've gotten (or guessed at) a much more defined protagonist is necessary. P3 and P4 were just "bad stuff is happening, stop it" but this feels like something much more tied in with the personality of the characters.

Yeah, it's Jun Fukuyuma voicing likes spoken "the Phantom" who we now know is the MC. He played Lelouch Lamperooge in Code Geass.

He's really charismatic, so a really weird choice to say a few lines for a dude that generally never talks.

Someone had a theory they might be doing more of BioWare-style protagonist. All your dialogue choices are voiced/affected differently, tonally.

You're right about that. In P3 and P4, events outside of the main characters' grasps shook up the status quo, and it was up to them to restore it. In P5, it seems that the main characters are the ones who are shaking up the status quo.

That's what Atlus did for Catherine.

If they are going with a more defined protag (which seems pretty apparent), VO would be great the bridge the weird gap between being a self-insert and having a personality not designed by the player. Imagine hanging out with your S. Link buddies and saying more than like 3 dialogue choices as they share all of their problems with you.

Though now I feel like I'm getting into dangerous speculation and I'll end up getting disappointed that these things won't happen lol

Lends credence to the idea they'd want to continue to do it going forward then. They always said Catherine was a sort of test bed, technologically.

Man, I hope they find a way to repurpose the texting technology from Catherine where you could choose your message to C/Katherine line by line. Such a fun little addition. We've had phone calls in Persona before and phones in general were highlighted in that initial reveal so there's some hope, at least.

We already see things from Carherine being carried over in terms of the character models, the camera framing, even the art to an extent. There's room to hope.

I honestly didn't realize Catherine had dialogue choices until Flux mentioned it just now. I only ever played the demo that released years. I really think MC is voiced and loosely characterized now.

Some people derive a lot of joy from persona fusion too. I sure did.

I'm one of them, as well. Fusing is really fun.

Catherine's texting system is definitely something that came to people's mind after the second teaser trailer. It would be a welcome aspect in Persona 5.

You should play it. I kinda dislike how people talk about it as if it's just a tech demo for whatever Persona team was brainstorming at the time since it's a very good game in its own regard. And I realize I'm guilty of that myself by fantasizing about Catherine features in P5 but like I said, it's a good game either way. I even know non-persona fans that enjoyed it very much.

Also, seconding the source request for your avatar art :3

Not being able to choose what skills pass down was infuriating, but once that actually became a feature I fell in love. It's the sort of customization that I really like to see.

The worst part in FES was canceling and rerolling multiple times, so that without realizing you rolled the skill you wanted onto the Persona, you automatically canceled and rerolled.

Yeah, they hadn't fixed that in Persona 4, either.

It was fun seeing Jeff and Vinny deal with that during the Endurance Run.

Yeah, that was the worst part. I love SMT: Nocturne because that game is so hard that fusing 'perfect' demons for a given situation is crucial to your survival. But unfortunately, you can't choose skills in that game and have to keep reopening that menu to reroll your RNG which definitely subtracted from the overall experience. Like, a lot. I'd like it if they ramped up the difficulty in P5 but also gave you the freedom of skill choice during fusions. And I think that feature is here to stay so I mainly hope P5 will be more punishing regarding bad personas.

Edit:

Also thanks from me!

Memories of trying to fuse a good thanatos are coming back.

This is also why I never bothered to fight the secret boss.

I hated the inheritance in those games. Trying to get Thanatos with Ragnarok, Niflheim, Thunder Reign, and Panta Rhei was way too tedious since he wanted to inherited Mudoon, Ghastly Wail and other shit you never use in an SMT game.

Fused a famed demon today in SMTIV and got every skill I wanted. Hope fusion in P5 is direct copy of SMTIV's fusion with triangle spreads of course.

They will probably allow you to pick the inherit slots but not replace the base skills of the demons like you can in SMT4. That's what they do in PQ.

That's what they did in Persona 4 Golden.

Edit: Oh wait, but base skills could be replaced there; never mind.

Sucks, but it's probably true. Also another annoyance

frmbuf049.jpg

Has Repel Light, but is still weak to it. Strange Journey fixed that annoyance thankfully, and it continued in SMTIV. But SMTIV also lacks the ability to reorder skills like in P4G, so my Famed demon triggers my OCD every time I see his skills :D

Any wallpapers of the new key visual floating around yet?

Not sure what you mean by 'key visual' but earlier in the thread a resident artist posted this:

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2015/038/6/9/persona_5_protagonist__fan_art__by_mailda-d8h31fj.png

Here's a link to the original resolution image. (its 4093x2458)

I tried scaling the original layered file to a 1080p size, but that caused huge problems with how the colours and shadows were filled, would have been too much of a hassle to fix.
