Persona 5 - PV 04 [New Trailer]

Do you think it is possible to follow the story of Persona 5 without having played any of the previous games? I'm a bit concerned the lore is very dense for new players.

Persona 3 & 4 are very long PS2 games and I don't really have the time or inclination to play through them first.
I hope it is possible to jump into Persona 5 as someone new to be series without being completely lost.

Yes, all the stories are isolated, and they don't really assume you know anything about the lore.

Yes. You don't have to play any of the previous Persona games to enjoy P5. Since P3, the games at most have just had in-game nods to older characters/locales that people who played the older games would notice, but they had no impact on the narrative. So, at most you'll most likely just miss a reference or two, but it won't affect your understanding of the lore and whatnot.

No worries, these really aren't lore games. The connections are few if any and not emphasized until you get to the spin-off material. P5 can totally be your first entry, if that's what you prefer.

Yes, each one is self-contained and I wouldn't say the lore is very dense. Only thing you will be missing out on is the context of Igor and what he is like, but he looks different in this game so it doesn't really matter.

Nah, every Persona is a standalone game with related themes and motifs.

No one has to worry about picking up P5 without knowing anything about the series.

I admit I could be wrong about Vincent but these two bear an uncanny resemblance to the two of them.

I'm still not seeing it.

Persona 5 will almost certainly be standalone with possoble nods. 3 only had small nods to Persona 4. The lore only feels bigger with the spinoffs. Persona 5 will likely be the same. Only Persona 1 and the 2s were significantly linked and you could still play 2 without 1 (though youd want to play both 2s)

I would play Persona 4 just to play Persona 4, because it's awesome, but no it's not necessary.

Persona's continuity is largely irrelevant from Persona 3 onward (Persona 1 through Eternal Punishment have a fair amount of connection between them but again, you can still play them and enjoy their stories, characters and mechanics without much of an issue...save for the first one) so you should be fine if, say, Nanako pops up as a teen or Maya Amano decides to interview you for a cameo since it's pure fan service that is unlikely to have an impact on the story.

Okay, nice to hear the stories are self-contained.
Goddamn I'm loving the art-style. So freaking cool!
Hopefully Persona 5 comes out in Europe at the same time as NA or else I will have to import it or something.

So is there a list of what was revealed at the event, or was it just a trailer and "it'll be at E3?"

That trailer though. Hoo boy! Didn't know Yusuke had a katana. That alone has made him permanent party member tier.

Well the trailer had plenty of reveals, new characters, gameplay and stuff.

Then there was the release date, price, DLC and SKU's.

For Gameplay details wait until early next week when famitsu and dengeki leaks might happem.

Lore? What lore? Any lore that Persona 3 and 4 have are basically entirely standalone and they aren't even consistent with each other, so why would that suddenly change in 5?

So. Skill types!

Looks like we have two phys (strike and pierce/gun), then the usual fire/ice/elec/wind, the nuke icon is probably almighty, and then of course light and dark, but what's the purple-pink target symbol?

OH MY GOD.

I just got outta class and saw this.

AMAZING.

The dungeons look incredible. The characters look great. So much style is oozing outta this game.

Give it to me Atlus.

Actually, just had a crazy thought: what if the nuke symbol is actually the old Nuclear type from P1 and P2 (since Almighty's never been on a weak/resist chart before, since it's normally indifferent to immunities), and the target is the P1 Gravity type?

Hell, they brought back guns! Why not?

I think someone mentioned it earlier and said the purple symbol is gravity.

Gravity and Nuclear were both in Persona 2, (and nuclear was in Persona 1 I believe) so it's likely the two 'new' skills are those. I hope Megidaleon isn't something players or enemies can be resistant to, though.

I was just asking. I know nothing about the Persona series really. I just saw the very cool trailer and the previous one.

Remember must gamers in the West haven't ever played a Persona game. It is still a niche product. Maybe Persona 5 will change that if it is awesome.

Beat you to it. People love to joke that Atlus forgot about P1 and P2, so it's interesting for them to bring these types back! They aren't in other Megaten games, just Persona.

Sorry, I missed the part of your post that mentioned that you hadn't yet played one.

Another possible mechanic return from Persona 1-EP?

This makes me very happy. Not that Persona 3 & 4's combat system was bad, just a bit too simplistic and easy for regular battles to become monotonous. Say what you will about the earlier games, at least their regular encounters presented a challenge, namely in Persona 1 where enemies would constantly stick charm status on you and cause your party to fight one another instead of, you know, the enemy.

Beat you to it.

I'll haunt you, I swear to god I will.

Bringing back guns and being able to fight recruitable Personas, too, and a couple of bonus discs in the special edition. I wonder if there's anything else, especially considering it's the 20 year anniversary.

They said they're changing up the social links this time. What if you can't get into a romantic relationship with every girl in the game? What if you can't get into a romantic relationship with any of the girls in the game?

That would be shit :l I want to vicariously live the through the eyes of an anime teenager macking hot anime chicks

I'm still a lowly scrub tryna complete P4G but my god did this trailer have me shook!

It's gorgeous and the new dungeon mechanics look dope as hell. I'm sure EU is 2017 release date so I've got plenty of time to get done with P4G.
