Was previous knowledge of P4 required to enjoy Q?
Not exactly but the great thing about PQ was seeing these characters again and seeing the two casts interact and how they affected each other.

It was a fanservice heavy game, so not knowing the characters would probably hurt your enjoyment of that aspect.

No you don't. Trust me.
was the first persona Q good?
I was literally looking at this game on the eshop yesterday hovering over the buy button, but didn't

They did with the first gameI have a great idea.
How about, this time, they make the game actually good.
Haven't even finished PQ lol
But I'll buy this day 1 for some P5 chibis :333
PQ's biggest issue in terms of writing was that it needed to be incosequential to both P3's and P4's cast. It had no possible room for character development and as a result each and every character was horribly one-dimensional, boiled down to their defining trope.
It was fun in the beginning, but holy shit, it wasn't able to carry an entire game and became annoying quick.
At least the gameplay was good.

I'm just in it for the P5 version of Light the Fire Up in the Night. At least, I'm hoping that's what they'll use for the battle theme.
I'm playing P4G now, I wonder if I ought to find some time for P3:The Answer before getting around to Q1.No major spoilers, but it was designed for fans of P3 and P4 who knew the characters.
My 3ds backlog is becoming worst than my steam one... Well less game on my 3ds, but they need big playtime, I have like 7 unplayed rpg on the system and it just keep increasing. I have yet to unwrap the first Persona Q...
Some people are fans of both you realize?Yeah PQ is inherently a confused product and so it's hard to manage expectations going into it. It wants to be both Persona and Etrian Odyssey but Persona fans aren't going to get anything close to a modern Persona experience and Etrian Odyssey fans will find its gameplay really simple. I think they did try a lot with balancing the elements but it's not a game that will fully satisfy either camp. I enjoyed it primarily because I loved the varied dungeon designs and the side quests.
Yeah I know. I'm one of them. But you can be a fan of both and still find PQ lacking because it doesn't fully commit to the key elements present in either series. Which is where expectations have to be managed...Some people are fans of both you realize?

I liked the first Persona Q although it felt unnecessary for me to have played through both P3P and P4G before I played PQ (which people on here were suggesting when PQ released). It wasn't important since the character references were trivial seeing as they performed repetitively the same stuff as tropes e.g. Chie going on about meat.
I've already finished P5 though so I won't need to do that for PQ2. P3P is still my favourite of the mainline series.
