Peter Dinklage in Bungie's Destiny - That wizard came from the moon

What is wrong with you people. Your judging a voice from 1 mission, wait till full game to see if it fits. Maybe robot was human or something. Anything is possible. He sounds fine to me though

Just from what i've seen on Ninjas stream his performance seems phoned in, like literally he didn't even arrive at a studio and just delivered some bored lines over a Skype call.

Has the reaction to offering different voice actors been bad? I thought most people were happy with having the option to buy different voice actor packs. It's like $5, right? That seems reasonable considering the amount of voice content you usually get. Nothing to say it couldn't be free, either, but that's doubtful.

All I know is that while Peter Dinklage might get better, if what I've heard so far is any indication, I'd like the option to change him out. Some of his deliveries really give me pause, and normally I don't care much about voice acting one way or another.

No, I haven't heard any complaints or anything - it's been received just fine. That was just my take on it, sorry if I implied otherwise.

What I mean is, while different soundpacks sound cool the only way they could market it is by using a gimmick or celebrity to back it up, which would make it less desirable and good in my eyes.

Can ANY actor deliver the line "That Wizard came from the Moon" in a serious fashion and it not sound terrible?

You're about the 50th person to say this. While the line is shit, the fact is that it's called acting for a reason. A good actor is supposed to be able to take shitty lines and make them sound decent. Actors, guys, that's their job.

This is how he sounds like in the latest trailer at E3. Did none of you see it or something? They obviously haven't processed his voice yet.

I feel like this should be a video that pops up the first time you start the alpha, at least for Bungie to say, we're letting you play Destiny early, but here's what it's really going to be when it releases. Especially with all the people in here saying "you should put a filter on Dinklage bro!"

This is sort of like people seeing an unfinished version of the first Mass Effect and saying "what the fuck is this bullshit? This Wrex alien just sounds like a human with a deep voice grunting the name Shepard all the time, you're terrible Bioware, and your voice actor is terrible!"

No, it's fine. I don't follow any games that actually use voice packs, so I really don't know how most people have reacted.

I understand where you're coming from. The optimistic part of me sees popular voice actors seeing more of the limelight, and hopes that it could give some less heard of actors a chance to get themselves out there. That's probably not likely, but I think it would be cool to see.

You know what, I take back what I said about it reminding me of the Bastion Narrator. What it actually reminds me of is Warframe's Lotus character. (Cannot find a good example of it, unfortunately.)

Lotus directs and comments on your situation in missions constantly. Since she is a Human(?) character, the delivery of her lines works just fine. I actually like her delivery of the lines, too.

It is basic stuff, like at the beginning she summarises your mission, or she'll comment on when you're about to be ambushed, what enemies you're facing, or when you complete a mission or fail an objective.

You can hear him reading. It's a shame because he really is a better actor than that.

All the voice acting has seemed rather apathetic. Which is, I mean, pretty much unacceptable for the highest budgeted game of all time.

Shoulda just got Troy Baker. If in doubt, throw a Baker at it.

Bad, but I'm not sure it's his fault. Seems like either poor direction, a lack of voice processing, or something else. Something tells me he was told to read his lines like that, so he did. I don't know too much about his skills as an actor, though. I don't think I've ever seen anything he's in.

Guys, I know this is really vague, but several months ago I was either reading an interview or watching an interview with either someone from Bungie or Dinklage himself talking about his VO work at Bungie and whoever it was, really had a shockingly nonchalant attitude about it.

Anybody know what I'm talking about? Maybe it was a Game of Thrones interview because I remember the Destiny question taking about 20 seconds total to talk about.

so yeah, my point is that it probably wasn't a huge deal for him.

This?

Where's this "emotionless" thing coming from? His lines and what he is saying isn't emotionless, his line delivery is just awful.

The problem is we're arguing an objective but unknown quantity (intent) versus a subjective but known quantity (talent). Which basically means all arguments are going to boil down to "nuh uh" versus "uh huh."

[And before I get shit for saying intent is an objective quantity, I realize I'm using the term loosely. But since it is theoretically possible to determine a level of intent (assuming one could question Dinklage and get a 100% honest answer from him, he could tell us if he tried his absolute best or didn't give two shits), it raises it somewhat above the opinion-based realm of subjectivity.]

The first thing that stood out to me was how bad the voice acting and announcer were.

Yeah, it is so strange how awful the voice acting is that I can't even rave on how awesome this game is.
I should be raving on: openworld exploration, great uses of MMO model: weapon longevity, and skill tree, tight gunplay, and easy to understand UI.

However, literally 90% of my Destiny posts are how awful the voice acting is. I just can't get over it.
How did Bungie screw up something like this for a 300MILLIONS budgeted series?
How is that possible?

It really is mind blowing. This would likely have been my game of the year/forever, but it'll be hard to keep a high opinion of it when I'm cringing and rolling my eyes every time the narrator says something. Simply unbelievable.

The intonation and delivery is that of someone who has recieved no direction whatsoever and has no clue what his character is or where it is or what the story is or who he is addressing.

Comes across like that part in the Simpson's where Krusty walks in and says the lines for his action figure in 10 seconds and then leaves.

The voiceover felt off against the epic theme of the game. I doubt Dinklage's Destiny performance is due to him not putting an effort, they would have quickly let him go if that was the case. This likely was a conscious creative direction decision.

Most overrated actor of the century.

U WOT M8?

I guess this proves that not every actor is also a good voice actor... And no, you can't just put this on the director or the script. A good voice actor will always deliver a certain amount of quality.

There is a novelty to it being Dinklage, but the lines and acting both are rather poor. Ghost is certainly no Cortana.

This game sometimes feels like halo. Even the music....

That being said... wish we had cortana AI voice :)

Love Peter in game of thrones..but damn... such a depressing AI......

He obviously has some sort of personality due to the content of the lines. The problem is that he sounds like himself and that he's bored. Super bad pick and whoever was the voice actor director needs to be shamed. None of the VA work is super impressive. They just picked famous people and had them read lines.

Worst VA work I've seen in a AAA game in a long long time.

Also to the people saying he's supposed to sound robotic, who the fuck cares? It's clear that he sounds like a human and he sounds bored. Unless there is some sort of meta joke where he says all of this to piss you off, it's clear somebody fucked up.

I get that some people may feel that way, but I love the contrast it provides. You're fighting aliens from the moon for christ sakes. He's just my AI bud, coming along with me on an adventure. Not everything has to be so damn deathly serious. I love the direction they're taking and I really hope it is too late to change anything because I think its great. Hearing the filter they put over the voice in the E3 trailer makes it even better.

John De Lancie is Quantum Conundrum is a good example of a guy who clearly wasn't given much direction and didn't really know what he was reading, but still was able to push through at least a little bit of charm and character despite it all.

My vote would be "bad".

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so monotone.
I cringe everytime I hear "I have a bad feeling about this".

Also, the announcer in the PVP portion of the game needs to be doing life insurance commercials, not competitive matchmaking.

Bad. Should of let Lance Reddick be the main narrator I slightly creamed myself in excitement as a fringe fan when I heard him in the alpha.

It's fine. Sounds like AI/robot too me. I've spoken to 5 of my friends about his voice, all had no problems. Sounds like you guys want the little ghost ball to sound like the mad hatter.

Bad. They hired a famous personality but made him sound monotone. They didn't even bother to add any filters to it. One or the other. Like, on one hand it's distinct enough where I can recognize it and it takes me out of the game a bit, but it's not exciting enough to where I actually enjoy it.

Average.

Yeah it sounds a little boring, but it does sound consistent and that makes me think it was intentional

He's definitely no Cortana or 343 Guilty Spark though.

I can hear the Halo 2 multiplayer announcer in my head if I think about it for a second. I just played Destiny a few hours ago and I can't say the same. I didn't think it was bad though. Also didn't mind Peter Dinklage as Ghost but yeah, there's some really corny lines.

There is the option for multiple shells so hopefully there are multiple VAs at work for your companion. I literally could not stand 20+ hours of Dinklage being bored.
