New Xbox 360 Controller in the Works
Jun 20, 2006 @ 2:53pm

Summary:
Outspoken Xbox 360 head Peter Moore reveals that Microsoft is currently working on a new Xbox 360 controller.

Full Text:

What could be more intuitive and innovative than this?

In an interview with Gamertag Radio and later reported on T3, Moore expressed his dismay with today's controllers as being complicated with too many buttons.

Moore also stated that his 14-year old daughter agrees and thinks the Xbox 360 controller is fairly confusing. But Microsoft is "doing a lot of stuff there," notes Moore. "Nothing that we're ready to talk about, and we're not going to force anything that is not going to be intuitive and innovative."

Could Moore's comments be the first hint of a brand new Xbox 360 controller in development that could rival the Wii-remote and PS3's new motion-sensor controller?

oh my... :lol

So it took 8 months after the announcement and about 6 weeks since it was publically playable for the Wii controller to become the new official standard.

:lol

OH noes.

Add tilt function, and Immersion's TouchSense rumble technology then STOP. Best controller EVAR? Seems so.

Here's what I read at Xbox-Scene:

Xbox360 Controller Upgrade Likely?
>> *****.com is kinda taking a big leap here, but who knows:
It looks as though the Xbox 360 will be seeing an upgraded controller in the not too distant future, as Immersion Technologies shows its revised rumble feature to press for the first time.

Microsoft is now a major shareholder in Immersion (around the 20% mark following follow-up investment on the $20 million original settlement, $6 million in share options and $9 million loan) and it does seem a cert that fresh technologies revealed by the company, originally founded on haptic devices in the medical field, will find their way into Xbox 360 or future Xbox controllers.

According to reports surfacing, the new rumble unit was shown inside a standard Xbox controller and operated a modified version of Star Wars(info): Jedi Knight II for PC, a perfect game for highlighting the rumbler's various capabilities. The first thing you should note is that Immersion's latest creation uses only one motor rather than two, geared to spin an undisclosed number of weights. This makes it lighter on power as well as providing reduced weight. Immersion showed the pad in Lightsaber mode to outline the subtlety it can achieve when mimicking movement. The pad was also used to fire a rocket, with feedback active as the projectile tailed away and in machine-gun setup, all of which was well received.

Note where they got their source, and take it with a grain of salt.

The 360 controller is god's gift to hands, they don't need to change a damn thing. Well ok, the D-Pad could use some work.

Some?

:lol :lol :lol :lol

Worst D-pad ever? I think so.

Oh god please MS, just add the tilt feature if you must add anything at all. But PLEASE for the love of god, don't put out a remote like the Wii. Sure alot of us have given lip service to the Wiimote saying it's innovative and such just to shut the Nintendo knobs up. But if E3 has proven anything it's that it's a joke as far as real gaming is concerned.

Please MS the Wiimote is a cute little toy but lacks the options nececarry for the type of games that real gamers enjoy.

Its funny, out of the 3 consoles, GC, PS2, and Xbox, Microsoft had the best D-pad of em all. Next Gen comes and they make the perfect control, but **** up the d-pad. How the hell did that happen

Maybe this is Peter's way of announcing the Wii60 Christmas Bundle. Wii + 360 for $500?? Finally, Blinx and Mario in one package!

Yea Peter, listen to this guy. He's obviously got the industry nailed down.

Is everybody retarded or something? If you are a game developer, and you think too many buttons is confusing, THEN DON'T USE THEM! They'll just sit there, unused, while games that need them will utilize them.

Do you also think Too Human is so bad it could never be a worthwhile game? We played a few incomplete demos on the Wii for ten minutes at a time. I hardly think your opinion, or anyone else's for that matter, is relevant right now.

developers won't much support an aftermarket peripheral, thankfully -- 360 control will remain basically gimmick-free.

No one talking about button reduction is talking about difficulties on the development end.

This is a shame, I can't believe how hypocrite MS and Sony are.
I hope that Nintendo crush'em until they go bankrupt.

How old are you, 14? How can you even write what you said with a serious tone?

What is real gaming in your eyes? Honestly?

"Nintendo knobs"? Who is the real fanboy here?

The whole point of this is that Microsoft recognizes that Nintendo may be on to something, and are quick to act. They should be applauded for the move. Remember when NIntendo decided NOT to use a CD base for the N64? That's stubborness. Microsoft is showing the willingness to change.

E3 proved one thing;

You are DEAD wrong if Sony, and now Microsoft are taking the Wii's new ideas seriously. What you call lip service, Microsoft took serious. Interesting how that works huh?

The fact is Sony/MS would like to do what Nintendo does ... they want a mainstream audience too.

They go home and realize that the product they're making isn't accessible to their wife/daughter/friends etc. at home. They know that their family/friends probably laugh or roll their eyes a little when they bring up "XBox" or "Playstation" or whatever.

They all know that.

Wasn't Bill Gates' favorite XBox game Fuzion Frenzy ... because it was the only game he could actually play?

They all know gaming is not as mainstream/accessible as it could be.

They just don't have the balls to take the initiative on it.

So Nintendo has to do it first (like the analog stick and rumble and touchscreen), and then Sony/MS will follow. If Nintendo doesn't take the lead, then no one will, especailly now that Sega is also out of hardware.

Ugh. I was very happy that all major game companies were taking their own directions with gaming and now it seems they're all just following.

Developers won't embrace the new controller simply because its not standard. At least Sony is making it standard...

Who sold over 100 million consoles last gen?

To the same, predominantly male aged 8-20 something audience.

And quite frankly, Nintendo isn't free of blame entirely either.

I think it took them losing marketshare and the horrifying realization that the Japanese game market was slowly dying (something unthinkable just 10 years ago) to finally get their ass in gear and genuinely start trying different things rather than just giving speeches about it.

After the paradigm shift of going from 2D to 3D, Nintendo also fell into a rut.

GameCube was more about them trying to rectify what happened with the N64, rather than leading the industry.

Good god, it better not be anything like the Wiimote, if it is I want no part of it. Just fix the D-Pad on the current controller and you got it.

Thats the key. The wonderfull thing abut the videogame industry is that every new generation you start at 0. It's like watching a great heavywieght fight, and having to wait 4-5years to see the re-match.

What happened last Gen means absolutly zippo.

.

Gaming is mainstream you douche.

Why all Ninfans act like gaming is just made up of hardcore people. 100 million PS2 sold and no sign of stopping for the following years should make a statement.

If the 100 million PS2 userbase was full of hardcore gamers then games like Ico, SotC, Shin Megami Tensei would be rocking the charts.

Remind me why I like GAF again?

360 to have NEW CONTROLLER, Peter Moore agrees with Nintendo!

Oh that's right, widely insubstatiated and senstional headlines that say one thing aboslutely when the article and author are clearly speculating.

also. OLD.

100 million out of 6 billion isn't mainstream.

How many DVD players were sold last year?
To make that an apples-to-apples comparison:
How many DVD players were sold last year from a single manufactuer?

Aye scores of millions of casual gamers magically forget about Sony and approach the industry with a totally fresh perspective.

I don't care about his 14 year old daughter!!1!

This is total bad news for Nintendo . What will Nintendo have if everyone copies their ideas , now Microsoft and Sony have it , but both have much better hardware , and Wii not =\ , so whats the amazing thing by the Wii now? Yeah alright Mario Metroid Zelda and Smash , but thats almost it.

Moms dads and sisters don't play "you douche."

There's "mainstream compared to the market in 1993," and then there's "mainstream."

TVs, DVDs, bicycles, these are mainstream forms of entertainment. They dwarf the video game industry.

Not everyone who owns a PS2 is a hardcore gamer, but being a casual gamer and being a mainstream person are NOT the same thing.

Yeah, if you say so.

If the PS2 is so great, then why is Sony sh-tting their pants and looking at everything Microsoft and Nintendo are doing?

Their E3 presentation was so laughably derivative ... for crissake they even copied the idea of giving the premium package a cheap silver trim from MS.

Sony is going to learn the hard way this generation IMO, and they will lose marketshare.

You either move forward or someone is going to get ahead of you in this business. That's the way it's always been, and that's the way it always will be.

I think for the first time I really sense some uncertainity from Sony. The DS is the first game machine to come out and really give them a kick in the balls (and then some) ... so they rushed to copy the Nintendo controller as best they could.

Good day.

To be fair, there may be 200 manufacturers of TVs, DVDs, bicycles, etc., versus three in videogame machines. Get 200 manufacturers of videogame machines, and sure -- there WILL be something for everybody, like it or not.
