Phil Harrison: "This is a marathon, not a sprint"

What are they supposed to say?

"We totally fucked up. We are sad. Our plan was shit. Sales are super low. We are doomed. Titanfall gave a little bump, but that's not nearly enough and it was super expensive to get as an exclusive"
This makes it sound like this was all intended, like a marathon runner doesn't sprint out the gate.

"Launch aligned, we're ahead of the 360's performance, and we're satisfied with that. We have lots of projects in development and we believe the audience will be very excited to see them, and we're still to launch in many countries. This generation is months old, there's a long way to go"

I want to hear something like that.

It's always been a Marathon, if you honestly believe Microsoft aren't going to fight back, you're delusional.

As equally as delusional as people thinking Sony are sprinting.

At the end of the day what else could he have said? 'We are ****ed, I doubt things will get any better anytime soon'? The reason this is a non-story is that what he stated is the only thing he realistically could have said to make people feel good. Both consoles are going to be built for the long term, the only difference is that Sony's PR and attitude is well above that of MS at the moment which has been a trend for the end of last gen to now, and it shows.

We shouldn't have tried to pull that always-online stunt and we also should have gotten Bayonetta 2 as exclusive instead. We also shouldn't have included a mandatory $100 Kinect for our NSA buddies and instead offered a $400 pricepoint."

We know, you probably told us so when you were at Sony Phil.
This is the typical Sony line and they are right. As mentioned, Sony even uses it today when they are in the lead. They equalized with the 360 and may even beat the Wii, which would have been a crazy thought 6-7 years ago.
The same goes for today, right now, I don't think Microsoft can gain the lead again but maybe they will.

We have a lot of different marathon runners. We have the people who aim to win, the people who strive for a new personal best and the people who wants to test themselves. So, yes. Sony clearly has the ambition to win. Microsoft seems more than happy for a personal best this time around if their PR is to be believed.

Finishing a marathon is its own race. Trying to battle Apple, Samsung and Google is another. Forgetting Sony was running then trying to minimize the impact through dull self awareness, well, that's where Phil comes in.

True but Sony is going faster while wearing weights.

Luckily for Microsoft, Nintendo (and Sony, just about) went on to prove them wrong on this statement last generation.

Didn't the Wii beat them to the 10 million mark? Someone made a gif of it even.

Granted they probably said something like "in the US" somewhere in that statement.

... the problem is that they've always come out of the gate strong and lost the marathon in the long run. They haven't even started this race with a sprint this time.

They need to get rid of him immediately. I dread to think where Sony would be right now, had he stayed. He needs to go, he comes across as being out of touch with the current state of the industry. The shit that he comes out with sounds like stuff from '06 Sony.

Phil Harrison is pretty good at his job. He saw the casual train coming and pushed forthings like Singstar, Buzz, Eyetoy and wanted to push the PS3 in that direction before it launched.
He saw the user generated content trend and signed Media Molecule. He signed Quantum Dreams for a little different AAA experience.

Sure, he had some duds like Lair (hey, who would have thought that Factor 5 fucks up?) but I think he does his job pretty well. Would like to see him at Sony.

I don't really see the problem in what he said, he's right it is a marathon and there's still a long way to go yet. I don't think they're going to take the lead but I don't think they're going to be massively disappointed with the sales by the end either. The biggest question is whether they're going to continue to support the XB1 long enough for it to still be in the race in the last few years of it's life, the Kinect stuff sold well but absolutely killed the enthusiasm for the X360 towards the end.

They're losing the sprint and they'll lose the marathon even more terribly. The gap will keep on going growing, it's never gonna get closer.

The 360 started out slow, actually. That's why the Xbox One is outpacing it right now.

Saleswise, the 6th and 7th fiscal years were the strongest for the 360.

Is launching in new locations your competitor has already been in for 6+ months really something they should highlight.

Sure. And there is no signs that MS is ready for this marathon. All they have now are 3rd party games bought at launch frame due to PS4 install base being low. In a year it'll be much harder for them to get any 3rd party exclusive. And their first party is Halo/FM/GeoW/Halo/FM/GeoW/Halo/FM/GeoW again.

It's always been a Marathon, if you honestly believe Microsoft aren't going to fight back, you're delusional.

The gap could reach a point where it becomes less appealing to attempt to close it. They're already bundling a big release + a price cut in some markets just to tread water. What's the market going to look like six months from now? If the PS4 is 2:1 or more by the time Titanfall 2 rolls around, how much money is that going to cost to moneyhat? Probably too much, even for MS.

It's not too late to drop the kinect and aggressively slash the price to get the part of the system that actually consumes content into more homes...

It's a really bad analogy. In sales, it's not like you would get fatigued if you get to 10M sales too fast, like you probably would if you sprinted the first 10km in a marathon.

Sony is like the best marathon runner in the industry, not just for sales, but also in term of supporting their hardware. Even when vita is basically dead in sales, they don't give up and immediately switch focus to indie and now it kinda feels like every day there's a vita game announcement coming.

Maybe but that isn't what happened to the ps3.

The gap did keep getting bigger in the US between the ps3 and 360 but overall the ps3 was selling more and faster in the whole world thats why the gap got smaller. Even if the Ps4 only outsells the xb1 by one console a month the gap will get bigger. Do you ever imagine a time when the xb1 will sell more over all WW than the Ps4 on a month to month basis?

Thank the high heavens they are in a race with the 360, then.
What? I'm not saying that they are.

It was just a comparison to show that even the XBO is outpacing the 360's sales. I could have mentioned the PS4 instead, but the I thought it would make more sense to mention the less popular current-gen console.

Reminds me of the picture of the marathon guy who shit his pants and didn't quit, dedication-winning is the only thing no matter how huh?
