“Is it possible to recoup a $7.5 billion investment if you don’t sell Elder Scrolls VI on the PlayStation?” I asked.
“Yes,” Spencer quickly replied.
Then he paused.
“I don’t want to be flip about that,” he added. “This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games. But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means.”
The fact that they did that actually makes me think they at least understand the key fundamentals.Amusingly, Luna is powered by Windows
They arn't gonna say everything is exclusive to a microsoft platform yet, they gotta get a few more acquisitions through yet and don't want regulators to have any reasons to say no.
I’m not really sure about that, Horizon and Death Stranding have done well on PC but Sea of Thieves and Halo are constantly in and out of the top 10 on Steam. Even right now, at £54.99, Forza Horizon 4 is Steam’s third best seller. Are you lumping steam in with ms though just because they happen to be on ms platform ? That doesn't mean anything windows is an open platform as far as storefronts go and by that logic Sony could open a storefront on Windows and sell on steam and instantly dominate Xbox as it does in the console market .... You said it yourself steam has 120 million users a month that's a number Microsoft wishes it had but their titles sadly for you though don't sell to 99% of those 120m users though and gamepass is like what 20m subs at the moment it's minuscule and in its infancy still it will grow for sure I'm playing rise of nations right now on it , I also think you overestimate the importance of xcloud because no one's gaming seriously on a tablet/phone or any mobile device that isn't a gaming laptop that kinda deafeats the object of having xcloud then in that situation.
That course will really help then Btw, I also have an accounting and business major.I was an accountant for over a decade, you literally have no idea what you're talking about
That's is true. No arguments there. But I don't think buying a studio is the only way to ensure GP games. They could probably have stricken a major deal for all future games to launch on GP day one for less than half the price and use the other half for new studio and IP development. However it does add something for Gamepass owners on Xbox, PC and Android. As they get access to the games on day one included in the cost of their subscription.
That course will really help then Btw, I also have an accounting and business major.
People keep saying MS needs PS sales to recoup the investment. Phil has already answered this:
Also people are missing the bigger picture. MS has BIG plans for Series S. Phil has openly stated he expects it to be a great secondary console for PS5 owners.
Now imagine this.
Xbox Series S bundled with Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield or 6 months of Game Pass for $299. That would be an absolute killer deal.

This is possibly the weirdest take yet... Who exactly do you think is making the decision over exclusivity?
Microsoft will decide whether anyone will get to play these games outside of Xbox and PC because, you know, they own the whole company...
They have whatever they want here, and it’s quite desperately sad to see Sony fanboys trying to both beg and mock at the same time.
Are you for real....So this thread titled "Spencer confirms that some new Bethesda titles will be xbox exclusive" will be funny when some new Bethesda games are xbox exclusive?
Whatever floats your boat man.
My monitor must need calibrating I see Green, Turquoise and BlueIt's all in this post.
MS can sell the games to 30% of the blue, 100% of the Green, and game pass can potentially be played on 100% of the purple. PS share is not required to make the money
Bruh, you'll get to play Fallout Shelter 2 on your Playstation and you're gonna be happy. The real games are gonna be Xbox and PC exclusive. Are you for real....
Since day 1 we've seen xbox fans on here and across the Internet bragging about this deal and why would Microsoft buy it for 7 billion if all games weren't going to be exclusive.
Suddenly only some games will be exclusive an some celebrate and mock like this is what they claimed. So what, if there's 10 games 7 come to ps5 also and 3 for xbox and this was worth all this bragging and celebrating and 7 billion?
This isn't what the fanboys said would happen. They should be mad if it comes to ps5.
You only have to look in this very thread first page for memes of PlayStation fans sticking a fork in a plug because of such apparent despair.
Let me ask you this had PlayStation bought a big studio and PS fans were bragging no games will come to xbox, you then learn that they still mostly will.
Is that a win for PlayStation? Or would xbox fans be laughing saying why spend 7 billion only to secure a bit of exclusivity.
Its hilarious the shifting positions. There's a reason they kept being so vague.
I think you might be color blind (no front, just wondering). It's all in this post.

This is the kind of content I joined this site for. Gonna be hard for PS gamers to accept the truth that they'll need a PC or Xbox (or streaming).

Publisher of iconic gaming franchises will expand Xbox’s diverse portfolio on Xbox Game Pass
This is an exciting day for Xbox. Today we officially complete the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks. It’s an honor to welcome the eight incredibly talented development studios – Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios – and their passionate global communities to the Xbox family. Now that everything is official, we can begin working together to deliver more great games to everyone. At every step building toward this moment, I’ve been inspired and motivated by the creativity, insight, and community-first approach of the talented people at Bethesda. Our goal is to give these teams the best foundation for doing their greatest work and to learn from them as we continue to build Xbox into an inclusive platform for all players.
This is the next step in building an industry-leading first party studios team, a commitment we have to our Xbox community. With the addition of the Bethesda creative teams, gamers should know that Xbox consoles, PC, and Game Pass will be the best place to experience new Bethesda games, including some new titles in the future that will be exclusive to Xbox and PC players.
As we shared previously, it’s vitally important that Bethesda continues making games the way it always has. We look forward to empowering Bethesda’s creative teams to reach even more players around the world, helping make future Bethesda titles the biggest and most popular games in their history. Xbox and Bethesda have long shared a common vision for the future of gaming. Both as fans and as creators, Bethesda understands the potential of Xbox Game Pass.
We would also like to honor the life and memory of my close friend Robert A. Altman, founder of ZeniMax Media. Robert believed deeply in the power of gaming and we are privileged to be able to continue his work by joining forces with the teams he built and led for many years. I will miss the opportunity to work directly with him on the future of our combined teams but I know that his spirit will live on in the shared work we do and motivate us to make this partnership all he envisioned.
Thank you to all our players for joining us on this incredible journey and to the millions of Bethesda fans around the world. Now that we’re one team, we can start working together on the future ahead. We will have more to share about what’s next for our teams later this year. In the meantime, to properly celebrate this special moment, we are bringing additional Bethesda games into Xbox Game
And Doom PSVR.The only reason it's vague is because they gotta release Deathloop and Ghost Wire on Sony consoles.
Will Starfield be next gen only like Deathloop and Ghostwire or will MS make it crossgen to feed gamepass wholesale? And Doom PSVR.
I suspect whatever is in their pipeline now, before he acquisition, will still be released on whatever platforms they targeted.
The exception to this should be Starfield, which will release only on Xbox/PC. They obviously thought breaking contracts on Ghostwire and Deathloop isn't worth it when everyone knows its going to be on Game Pass a year later. I suspect they will have a different opinion on Starfield.
We'll see.
Is there really anyone who thought Micorosoft would have paid 7.5 billion of USA dollars to then not secure exclusivity?
MS is hands off when it comes to decisions like that and Bethesda already moved away from last gen. No reason to believe it will be cross-gen.Will Starfield be next gen only like Deathloop and Ghostwire or will MS make it crossgen to feed gamepass wholesale?
Surprising for ms to abandon millions of last gen gamepass & xcloud subscribers, but Music to my ears.MS is hands off when it comes to decisions like that and Bethesda already moved away from last gen. No reason to believe it will be cross-gen.
Halo+sea of theives have done well definitely no doubt horizon 4 has aswell I know Sony's exclusives get massive exposure to the public aswell , once the balls rolling I can also see them charting really high especially a Spiderman or Gow or something .I’m not really sure about that, Horizon and Death Stranding have done well on PC but Sea of Thieves and Halo are constantly in and out of the top 10 on Steam. Even right now, at £54.99, Forza Horizon 4 is Steam’s third best seller.
That's definitely Darius87 / @Darius1987. Ignored the guy/girl a while back, wonder if they are still active though?
Phil literally always gets so excited to say "only play exclusively on Xbox and PC" and hear the applause, he's not giving that up for a blog post! I would imagine that they are waiting for a more impactful way to deliver the news (such as E3 or a big promo Xbox video conference)Why are they going to announce it all in a blog post only the nerds are going to read instead of at a big show that’s going to get the word out?
Did you see any games mentioned or their release dates mentioned there?
Why would they mention platforms before those items?
“Dev kits are typically PCs or specialised hardware running a specific set of specs that platform holders believe mirror the specs of their upcoming consoles.”
Domt you read before posting... Xbox has these “DevKits” too.
They are not final.

You’re right. Comments about how Sony fans with beefy pc and why doesn’t Sony make GoW multiplat. I still think all games will end up exclusives but their fans are obviously nervous because they haven’t made an absolute statement and the FoBoB comment still lingers. Could be that Microsoft is setting up a big reveal to appease their base. After the gold doubling reversal they have set a precedent that they can be made to change their minds if enough people revolt. That was some bad public relations that happened not too long ago. Having another happen this soon would be a mistake imo. They’ll make all games exclusives but let’s not pretend that the expectations here were almost unanimous that it would be ridiculous if even one game other than the prenegotiated games end up on PS.Are you for real....

Final devkits were out for both in June 2020...Still waiting for the proof lol
see this is where a lot go wrong, it was like when you called out the guy who worked on making the xbox you have an opinion but dont back it up with evidence. I provided storys of xbox dev kits getting out late but you couldn’t provided anything on them getting out at the same time.
now the new dev kit you provided for ps5 looks cool and good shots, anbd i look forward to getting my ps5 in next few weeks

Regulators do not give a damn about Microsoft buying videogame companies. They arn't gonna say everything is exclusive to a microsoft platform yet, they gotta get a few more acquisitions through yet and don't want regulators to have any reasons to say no.
are you crazy? you think ps4 or ps5 have greater userbase than steam alone? really? add to that whatever console number and you wonUmm, no. This is literally incorrect.
Waiting for receipts and credible numbers.
Minecraft brand is a different situation for MS, specially when they've been putting more of their games on other consoles (see Nintendo). That's because they want to attract people from other platforms to theirs or at least that's what I think they've been doing bringing some games to Nintendo Switch. It wouldn't feel odd to me if they decided to start keeping even those as exclusives... If MS see a good reason to keep all games exclusive they will.History? Microsoft released Minecraft Dungeons last year.
They’re not. They are contractually obligated to release certain games that we know of and possibly some we don’t. They can go into their pockets and break those contracts but they’re not doing that. Meanwhile, Sony gets at least 2 new releases exclusively on their system courtesy of Microsoft and zenimax. When you factor in how covid has put the clamps on game development and people are clamoring for new games, those 2 games are an even bigger get for Sony. Microsoft had an opportunity to flex their financial muscles there too and they didn’t so I’d ease up on the total control narrative.Microsoft is totally in control of what happens here, not your wishful thinking, that’s the only thing that is certain.
It wasn't directly aimed at you, I read a lot of Sony users who are trying to downplay the fact that Bethesda is First party studio in the same way as naughty dog is for Sony. They will make it realize themself that the games that will be platform defying will remain exclusive as soon as they are presented. And what they won't be ... like Deathloop Tokyowire, ESO, or fallout76. ..it will cost 70 euros (maybe after 1 year,) vs 9.99 $ at launch and surely and we can bet that the Xbox versions they will ALWAYS run better.Exactly. I've been saying exactly this, and this is what MS will likely do with "most" games (not all, as some will definitely be pure exclusives). And that + free DLCs or exclusive expansion packs will ensure that the "best" version will be on XBox.
And not sure what the "enjoy" in the end means, but sure ... yeah, I will "enjoy" these games if they are good.
As I said 100 times (and I will repeat for the 101st) the Xbox user base is now much higher than what the ps5 can hope to have during the entire gen.
Wait, what? Steam userbase =/= Xbox user base.are you crazy? you think ps4 or ps5 have greater userbase than steam alone? really? add to that whatever console number and you won
www.pcgamer.com/amp/steam-had-120-million-monthly-users-in-2020/
Yeah I don't think that was ever the argument. It wasn't directly aimed at you, I read a lot of Sony users who are trying to downplay the fact that Bethesda is First party studio in the same way as naughty dog is for Sony. They will make it realize themself that the games that will be platform defying will remain exclusive as soon as they are presented. So I smile and I don't understand what they have to downplay) that's all.
Just because they chose to not use their total control in order to pull Deathloop and Ghostwire from Playstation, it doesn't mean they don't have it. They still do.They’re not. They are contractually obligated to release certain games that we know of and possibly some we don’t. They can go into their pockets and break those contracts but they’re not doing that.
