Phil Spencer discusses the new Xbox One S

Very good looking product. But I'm going to pass.

It has to sell, they gave it an S after the name, if it worked for Apple it works on anything. iDEAS yo!
Funny enough, their S upgrades are usually bigger upgrades than what their competitors offer.

depending on the trade in price, i could see myself getting a slim

still not sure about the scorpio even though it sounds great. i already have a capable PC and dont own a 4k TV. however, maybe by holiday 2018 ill be ready to jump in.

Blows my mind anyone would buy this with Scorpio on the way next year.

I don't think so. People need to realise that the Scorpio is going to be a really expensive piece of equipment when it is released. The Xbox One S will be positioned as an entry level console for new consumers - Phil Spencer basically says this. Also, it is not a bad product to buy if you are on the market for a 4K Blu-Ray player.

Scorpio gonna be expensive brehs. Makes me think I'd rather get the S and upgrade my PC instead of getting Scorpio.

Sorta this? I mean didnt they say FP exclusives from now on will be on W10 and Xbox? I think for people without a decent PC then Scorpio is a good choice if it just fits them better.

Has anyone else noticed that Phil keeps referring to it as Xbox One Scorpio? That should answer a lot of people's questions as to whether this is a new 'generation' or just a significant iteration/revision of the Xbox One console.

Does that really blow your mind?

One will be cheap, one will be expensive.

Does that unblow it?

Hey, I got a new phone this year. I got myself an iPhone 5S and I love it. I saw the 6 but it wasn't for me, not worth the extra money (plus I prefer the look of the 5S). True story.

It might just be called Scorpio. At least I hope so. It's a great name

I may have been hearing things but I'm sure I heard one of the people in the video call it the S.C.O or somethings...

UHD blurays is that popular now?

Not yet but it's gaining momentum. 4k sets are becoming the standard on new models as of this year and streaming services are offering it more and more. People are getting interested in jumping in, they're just waiting for availability and price.

The S, Neo and Scorpio will boost 4k adoption and it means all future major game consoles will consider it a standard feature. With both tvs and game consoles treating 4k as standard, adoption is inevitable.

I doubt it, but if they're using "Scorpio" it's going to be called Xbox One Scorpio. They clearly want to create a family of devices under the "Xbox One"-banner.

Really happy to hear the discussion on Scorpio. All XB1 accessories will also work on Scorpio (controllers and other peripherals, for example). If this is where the Xbox platform is going, I'm really happy. It's a win-win for gaming in my eyes.

I'll probably trade my 1TB One in for the S. Scorpio is too far out and too unknown to make a decision about at the moment

Edit: holy heck! I'm a member?!?!?!

2tb isnt $299

299 500GB
349 1TB
399 2TB

Yeah, not that great. :(

People wasting money if they buy the versions above the 500gb model. Just get a 5TB external for $130 and save your money. If I was to swap one f these in August the 500gb is good to go with the externals I already own.

Why do people buy the Moto G when the Moto Z is coming?
Why do people buy a Honda Civic when they can get a Bugatti Veyron?
Why do people go to McDonalds instead of a gourmet restaurant?

I'm skipping this one and going for the Scorpio but I can totally see them phasing out the og Xbox One and just having the S and Scorpio model.

Too add: the reasons I would swap is largely to take advantage of the 4K tv I have. With that support I would move the one out of our great room to the primary tv and it would get more use. As it is now the One collects dust because I don't spend a lot of time in that part of the house. I think as others have said this will be a primary appeal of the device.

Basically:

-XB1 and XB1 S will be forwards compatible with Scorpio, users on the older systems won't be left behind.
-Scorpio is high end, likely meaning it will be notably more expensive.
-From the way Phil was wording things, it sounds like the OG XB1/S will be the entry model.

Has anyone asked why this should be bought over a PC? I'm genuinely wondering how they're positioning that.

His answer is that he wants to play users the choice. You want to play on Pc, on a budget console or the top end? It's your choice, they are building the platform so you can always have your games, accessories and friends anywhere.

Xbox for them now is simply building the best box they can, either by offering the lowest price possible with Slim, or the most performance they can crank in a small box with scorpio.

That number will be way up in a few years. It's pretty hard to get a decent HDTV that isn't 4K these days. That will change with HDR gradually, too.

Serious question. How much better does a 4K TV look over a 1080p? Don't ask me how, but I've never actually seen 4K content. Unless you have a super large screen, I find it hard to believe it'd be much different. I'm not saying there is no difference, only that it's not drastic enough to make new major purchases in order to see it. Right now I have zero interest in getting a 4K TV.

I love how Phil just casually mentions the UHD BR drive, that's probably the system's biggest selling point.

Is it really? I don't see a lot of people talk about this :/

I work in a video game store and the problem with watching Blurays and DVDs (back in the days) on your console is that it will kill your lens 3x faster than playing games because of the way that games only read the disk during loading times and put the data in the ram. On the other hand, the lens is constantly working when watching a movie.
It's still cheaper than buying a good UHD BR drive though.

Yeah but for the 5/10% of people who have a 4K TV... :/

4K TVs is what all the electronic stores and websites are pushing if you're buying a TV now.

I've seen plenty of them at budget prices, a lot quicker than when 1080p finally came down to affordable consumer levels. This year we'll see a big push.

My plan is to wait for Scorpio's price reveal. The decision at this point is whether it is worth building a high end PC or buying Scorpio.
