Phil Spencer: Why Scalebound, Crackdown 3 and Quantum Break won't be launching on PC

Indeed. it will take a couple of years for console optimization to kick in and start forcing PC upgrades to compete with console performance. (Assuming dx12 / win10 doesn't change that paradigm)

Mmh... not really. Unless you're playing on something really close to console performances, such as a GTX 750ti, I don't see that happening for higher grade hardware.

I am a bit confused, are you implying console games out 2 years from now will be so "optimized" that they require higher end PC hardware? Because it has already been almost 2 years since launch and this isn't really the case.

Indeed you are. The entire point of moving to x86, mature APIs, and PC GPUs was to reduce the time and effort to get great utilization on consoles. I am pretty sure console hardware is being well utilized now, rather the jumps in graphics to be seen are about changing the way graphics are rendered / programmed. Not by making sure you are actually making use of more cycles.

Assuming a 8-9 year console lifetime, and 2-3 years development time, I figure the second generation of games are starting to be made now with that first batch of experience from launch type of games.

Your second point is super intriguing to me though! That bodes well for PCs. Have their been many comments from devs about learning curves and performance gains within the generation? I didn't think the learning curve for x360 would be much different compared to current gen...but would be interesting to see where game evolution takes us then if performance optimization is a lesser factor....

Unlike Sony and Nintendo, Xbox bring's barely anything of note to Microsoft's bottom line even in the best case scenario. It's a very small cog in the larger and much more important Windows 10 machine. Like I said, nothing's going to happen overnight, but Microsoft's new corporate direction is taking a pretty large precedent in how things work in every Microsoft division. The console war is insignificant compared to that new direction. That new direction affects Windows, Tablets, business, Mobile, Entertainment, pretty much everything about the much more important wider Microsoft.

As far as I know Office is Microsofts biggest moneymaker but yes their whole ecosystem is important to them. But the Xbox brand is MS gaming brand and is far away from being insignificant.

Sony also has a lot of diversity in their line up. From gaming, to TVs, Smartphones, Tablet and the Movie and Television industrie but the Playstation is killing it right now for them. Why wouldn't MS want the Xbox to be just as successful and profitable? There is absolutely nothing that should have prevented the Xbox from selling just as well other than poor decision making on Microsofts side.

The Xbox Devision could be huge, with a 100mil sold Xboxs and a big entertainment package (at the end of this gen of course). And this isn't just wishful thinking. Sony is totally on track to get to these kind of numbers and their strategie is not new at all. It's basically the PS2 all over again.

I just don't see how stripping a console from its main selling point does any good. And an Xbox that is more or less a steambox would be kind of insignificant, the same way as steam boxes aren't even close to being a relevant console alternative right now (in terms of sales numbers).

And the worst of all is the word of mouth which basically ruined the Xbox One reveal. If there really are no exclusives and every single game looks way better on PC what do think the Internet would say? And this factor might be by far the most important one.

Personally I would totally benefit from a better integration. I have alle current consoles and a high end gaming PC with Win10 but I just can't see how this decision won't kill the Xbox brand completely (the console brand of course not the Win10 App brand).

Hate to be nitpicky but realistically this isn't true. One of the reasons Sony described 2015 as a harvest year to its investors is the fact that the business isn't doing so well outside two specific divisions, Playstation and smartphone (read, Iphone) cameras. The Playstation section has to support the rest of the company, which is placing downward pressure on any investment they have in their platform.

There's that pc support we were promised.

Nothing has changed.

Right, let's just forget the upcoming games that are coming to PC like Rise of Tomb Raider and Killer Instinct.

What's with some people in here? I swear some people think all devs and publishers have to do is snap their fingers and *POOF* a video game appears.

Is this not the first time that DX was tied to a specific version of the OS (at least 'modern' OS, not including 95/98/NT/etc.);

DX 9 = Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP.

DX 10 = Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista.

DX 11 = Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7, Windows Vista.

DX 12 = Windows 10 only.

This post makes no sense to your argument. It only shows how DX is forward compatible, for example, DX 10 launched with Vista, but was it backward compatible with XP? Nope, same with DX 8 and 9 being an XP and up API, wouldn't work with anything before XP. 10 and 11 are Vista and up era, DX 12 will be Windows 10 and up. Nothing has changed.

He's wrong on DX12 being the first OS exclusive DX but you're wrong as well as both 8 and 9 were available on Win95SE and up I believe. DX10 is the first DX version which demanded a new OS (Vista). DX11 was kinda in the middle as it was released not only for 7 but for Vista as well. So DX12 is like DX10 in that regard - it works on one OS version only at the moment of release.

The learning curve was a lot bigger for both Xbox 360 and PS3 for respective reasons.
For both, it was because of being the first console to use programmable shaders.

For Xbox 360, it was because its GPU was using newer tech, even newer than the one in PC GPUs at the time, and featuring unified shader architecture.

For PS3, it was the Cell, which was, in its own, a hard but interesting architecture to use, especially for some graphic or physics tasks.

Both consoles were comparable to high end hardware at the time. But for PS4 and One ? They're using nearly off the shelves architectures. And not even high end components on top of that.

Maybe this is why it was delayed?

Probably the reason Scalebound was delayed, too.

Phil Spencer said:
"Going to those teams mid-cycle and saying: ‘Hey, by the way, I want to add a platform,’ didn’t really feel like necessarily the best way to end up with the best result for the game. They had a path that they were on. It’s not to say those games could never come to Windows, but right now we’re on the path to finish the great games that they’ve started, and I want that to be the case. These games are on a path, whereas with, like, Halo Wars 2 I had the opportunity from the beginning, when we’re sitting down with the studio, to say, ‘Here’s the target. Here’s what we wanna go do.’

Guess he found some resources to do the PC work, or the extra time was enough for Remedy to do it.

He bumped it as a way to try to hurt Phil Spensor and Microsoft's credibility in his own Console Warrior way. He can't possibly understand that companies can change their mind after stating something in the past.

Spin up a fresh copy of your "I believe in Phil Spencer" tags, folks! We can't have a contradiction stand in the way of Xbox's savior looking good.

Seems like PC gamer just click baited that title, because going by the excerpts he didn't say 'won't' come to PC. Just that at that point it wasn't part of the product roadmap. Which could've well been true.

If things were completely different 5 months ago, i think that Halo 5 and the holiday blitz must have underperformed by quite a margin.

/smh

Quantum Break was delayed. He said time was the issue. They have more time, so PC version made sense. I don't see how that has to do with Halo 5.

Yes, that's absolutely it! Totallyin my interest to do that.

So you bumped this for no reason

Good job

Just thought it's fun to look back at the interview and the responses here on GAF after today. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This contradiction is good for Xbox and good for gamers as a whole though. In my opinion that is indisputable.

It does look better. But it is still amusing when things that aren't happening are implied by the person or others, but then end up happening and vice versa.

The "Xbox's savior" is trying to make sure that games get into the hands of a wider audience.

If you can explain the downside to this, I'll listen.

Twist: You cant!

I was just about to say the same thing. It must be really important to them to justify delaying games for Windows ports

Halo is the next

No, the reason it gets a PC release in time with the console release is more likely to be the delay. While polishing the game they had the ressources to do a PC port.

Sorry

Not sorry

Ooooh good bump. Love a good call out. Time yet for Scalebound to have a PC version confirmed when "the timing is right" then.

It's the smartest move Microsoft can make, get their games available to 120+ million PC gamers (i.e. potential customers.) I doubt Quantom Break was going to convince a bunch of people to go out and drop $400 on an Xbox and the game but I'm sure Quantom Break will convince a lot of PC gamers to drop $60 on the game.

They're making money, both Xbox and PC gamers are getting great games, win win.

Pretty impressive to get a PC version of QB up and running (presumably) in 5 months!
Or they delayed the XB1 to release in time with the PC version, because after Halo 5 they started thinking the PC version might actually sell more.

I don't think so, but it is possible.

Eh, I'm not surprised. They need to incentivize people to invest in an Xbox One, and exclusive games are they best way to do that.

Have they a credibility? Damn.

Sure, I think Phil has plenty of credibility. In this case it seems like plans have changed, which happens particularly with delays.

They've been pretty clear the direction Xbox has been going in and... they are coming through on it but things take time.

Wouldnt have mattered to me since I would get it on the Xbox anyways.....even with the free WIN10 voucher.

Console warriors are funny.

Yeah really makes no sense why some xbox warriors are complaining. Do you not want the devs to succeed and make sequels for your favorite games? Do you not want MS to make big profits so they keep funding these games? This is only a good thing and PC owners getting to experience these games won't hurt their enjoyment on Xbox.

Eh, I'm not surprised. They need to incentivize people to invest in an Xbox One, and exclusive games are they best way to do that.

Um... No? I believe their business goal is to make the biggest profit possible for their games division not to "incentivize people to invest in Xbox One".
