Phil Spencer: Why Scalebound, Crackdown 3 and Quantum Break won't be launching on PC

"In the case of things like Scalebound or Crackdown or Quantum Break, you know, just to be completely honest with you, we started those games before we really looked at expanding into Windows in the way that I wanted to bring as part of becoming head of Xbox.

Then they made the change in mindset, made a delay and they are now coming to both platforms. Everyone wins. MS amended their plan to include more exposure to their games. Everyone wins. Anything negative said about this is pure bitching.

Or they delayed the XB1 to release in time with the PC version, because after Halo 5 they started thinking the PC version might actually sell more.

I don't think so, but it is possible.

It isn't going to sell more if they keep it in the windows store.

What changed their minds then?

Halo 5 sales? PS4 moving ~5 million consoles during the last 3 months of the year? The fact that this was a vague possibility given MS' posturing towards a Windows 10 (PC+Xbox+Cloud+Mobile) ecosystem.

It's not like this is out-of-nowhere phenomenon.

Yes, that's what I wanted to hear from the poster. It looked like he wants to play it like "everything is fine in the kingdom"

The "Xbox's savior" is trying to make sure that games get into the hands of a wider audience.

If you can explain the downside to this, I'll listen.

Twist: You cant!
I'll let Phil explain why it's not a good idea:

"Going to those teams mid-cycle and saying: ‘Hey, by the way, I want to add a platform,’ didn’t really feel like necessarily the best way to end up with the best result for the game. They had a path that they were on."

So you don't think they are going to sell 1 copy of Quantum Break on the Windows store?

No. I'm just contesting the idea that it will sell more on PC than on XB1, it is unlikely and doubly so if they don't put it on steam. They can't be that bullish on the prospects of the Win10 store.

I was just about to say the same thing. It must be really important to them to justify delaying games for Windows ports

Well, they are on the Windows team that has a target of getting Windows 10 on a billion devices in 2018. They've collectively got under 3 years to hit that target and I believe they're just over 200 million as of the end of December. Getting some big games on Windows 10, enticing PC gamers to upgrade from Windows 7, might help close a bit.

I think just as importantly, they're seeing that games are a huge category for revenue in the Windows Store.

That crazy racist (rice eating) CrapGamer is losing his mind on twitter. Even Phil Spencer is asking him why he would cancel his preorder for QB "because someone else get's to play the game on Windows."

^ this.

I think DX12 games are going to be a huge driver of Windows 10 adoption.

Been reading Phil Spencer's responses to some of these console warriors on Twitter... Holy shit. Are these people for real? Like, actual people?

So embarrassing.

QB doesnt appear to be a cheap game to make, so seems sensible - especially as Remedy want to make the best PC version they can.

Cant help but look awkward retrospectively at what Phil said and what has happened. I wouldnt be at all surprised if nothing changed plan wise but the PR that needed to be said then, fit its purpose.

ps3ud0 8)

With them opening the door to games on PC as well Spencer won't win. Reason being if they end up with just ports at higher res and framerate people will be upset there were no new visual features added. Slippery slope.

I hope ALL their exclusives make it to PC though, and that they make a new Flight Simulator.

Hmm, sorry my reading comprehension was a bit off there!

I think they ultimately have to start somewhere, the Windows 10 store/Xbox App needs to improve in certain ways but Steam, GOG, Origin etc all started somewhere (which is much less than they are now), I think that Quantum Break is a game that assuming it reviews well will certainly get people interested in using the store, even if they only do it for specific titles.

Sure, I think Phil has plenty of credibility. In this case it seems like plans have changed, which happens particularly with delays.

They've been pretty clear the direction Xbox has been going in and... they are coming through on it but things take time.

And Phil has said that he wanted games to follow a user no matter the device they are using, be it PC, Mobile, or Xbox. That's the future of the brand. It's only a good thing for us gamers.

They're freaking hilarious. I'm reading crapgamer's twitter posts and the salt is delicious. Dude takes games way too seriously ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

You're a broken record and you know it, so I'll say this.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and Fable Legends were announced for W10/DX12, Sea of Thieves, Halo Wars 2, Killer Instinct, and recently ReCore. There were only a handful of games NOT coming to Windows 10 and those are one by one being confirmed.

Perhaps Phil wanted to keep these 3 bound to the Xbox. Or maybe after Oct-Nov-Dec with Halo 5's somewhat tepid sales and PS4 blitzing the holidays, months that came after August when these comments were made, Xbox leadership readjusted and have decided to go all in on the Windows 10 + Xbox One route.

how salty do you have to be to make something like that...?

Jeeze.
