Can we in fashion with the "Rare and crazy historical photos" thread, please tag photo's if they are from a specific event/news worthy moment?
Will save a lot of questions down the line...

100% agree with you I can't even begin to understand this.

I'm in no way an Apple fanboy but I think we can agree that this device has had a major impact on the world, so I think Steve Jobs unveiling the Iphone is a moment that will probably be looked back on;

I thought of this right away, I always remember this comparison photo.

I like technology as much as the next guy, but this really annoys me for some reason lol

Those pictures of ISIS destroying historic artifacts makes me extremely sad.

Disagree. The kids actually enjoying the ride serves as a reminder to put the phone away sometimes. Good juxtaposition.

Oh I agree with you about that. But from the view of being a representation of modern times I feel like either the situation being reversed, or just being one group with a phone would have been more accurate.

I have a hard time understanding this stuff. You can easily see every person has their phone out. Why not enjoy being in the moment and BE there, instead of watching your life through a phone? chances are if you want a picture of something famous you can find an amazing one online. Certain moments, unique to you, I can totally understand.. but for most stuff? put your phone away.

I understand that people like having *their* photo of xyz, but honestly the more I think about it the more it feels like a bad tradeoff.

I remember when I went to a maldive island with my girlfriend back in 1999, there was one guy who was filming his family when the boat we were on arrived at the island.

And I exactly thought that to myself "why doesn't he just enjoy it?".

And now everybody is like that..

It's horrible...

Yup this is definitely a pivotal moment.
I was on the bus the other day and noticing peoples phone's.
I feel like we're moving to this uniform future. Everyone either has an iphone a samsung and then a select few with like a LG or huawei.

I was actually showing up to work at the building right next to this when it happened.

Because it was an anti-IRS terrorist the event is basically forgotten. No one wants to consider it as possible outcome of all this anti-tax nonsense.

You can't understand why a guy would be filming his family? Really?

Memories. So you can look back 10, 20 years from now and be reminded of those moments..

My grandfather used to be the guy who had a camera out every holiday, recording video and taking pictures, and it was annoying. But now, years later, being able to revist those moments that have been recorded and immortalized through video and picture is a wonderful gift

The interesting thing for me is: I'm 30, I've basically lived through:
- Having 1 (landline) phone back home that was rarely used. I remember asking my mom if I could call my friend to ask if he wanted to play outside, the reply from my mom was: How about you get your lazy ass off the couch and walk down the street and just ring his doorbell. And the awesome part about it was that it was this type of phone:

- The emergence of the mobile phone, I remember going to Paris (when I was around 10-12 years old) with my parents and sister (to visit Disney Land) and I saw so many people with cellphones walking around in Paris.
I remember thinking: who do these people need to talk to while on the move?

- My first cellphone, I was about 15 years old, don't remember needing it exactly but it was all the hype at high school, hell snake (the game) was the shit back then:

- Mobile data / Internet access. Can't label this with an age or date but I remember thinking for a long time: Why the hell would I need mobile internet access?
And to be honest when we did get it most of us used it for reading news on the toilet...

And now we have access to the "sum of all human knowledge" on a device that fits in your pocket.
I'm really interested in what we'll all be up to in another 10-20 years on that front!

Some repeats but these are the pictures I think should be in the textbooks of the Future..... you know if Texas doesn't rewrite history to fit what it thinks it should be.

Why?

I really don't get the "hate" for smartphones.

For me it's not a hate of smartphones, it's how people have become slaves to them.

If you're at a once in a lifetime event, what's the point of holding up your phone and adding to the other 1000 phones already up in the air? It's being recorded, there will be a hundred videos of it on YouTube. Not to mention it's most likely being recorded professionally, and that video will also be on YouTube, so what's the point?

Now 1000 people have a shit quality video on their phone that they're never going to watch, instead of just experiencing the moment like a regular human being. It also really sucks for the few people who aren't holding up phones and can't see anything because every other asshole has their arms up in the air.

Same reason why people have been taking pictures and recording video with their own cameras/camcorders/etc. for decades

And why the assumption that one can't record/take a picture and also "experience the moment like a regular human being" at the same time?

Just because you don't see it that way doesnt mean that others aren't experiencing the moment. Perhaps with the rise of technology, that is normal behavior and you're the outlier

I don't recall going to concerts in the past and seeing 75% of the people holding up camcorders above their heads. In fact I don't recall seeing camcorders very much at all, aside from vacations to Disney World or Cancun or something like that.

The focus is now on keeping your phone at a good viewing angle, as opposed to simply enveloping yourself in what you are trying to record. Can you imagine if the first 50 rows at Live Aid '85 were all holding up phones? No, because they were actually dancing and swaying and participating in the concert.

And yes, I am the outlier now, unfortunately.

On some level it's still unreal to me how fast and insanely advanced cellphones have evolved over such a short amount of time. Arguably the center of many people's lives, this tiny thing is the doorway to infinite knowlegde and hyperconnectivity at any time at any place.

It boggles the mind.

i was very able to film parts of the ComicCon Star Wars Concert and fully enjoy the event. Rewatching my footage of the march there still gives me chills.

Those "professional" videos on youtube most likely won't have shots of the joy in my girlfriends eyes, my friends awkwardly trying to "dance" to a movie soundtrack played by a classic orchestra (it's a concert after all!), so they have no value other than "documentation that the event happened". It's all about one's own point of view.

It's similar to the jaded view of people taking selfies everywhere.
Sure, there's PLENTY of 16 megapixel shots of famous landmarks, but taking a picture of your group of 7 friends is a much better reminder of the great time you had than that, don't you think so?
Of course, there's people taping entire concerts, which is pretty pointless, but live and let live, right? As long as they don't block your view...

smartphones are rad.

my addition would be

Are people seriously having a problem with people recording stuff with their phone, and claim they arent enjoying themselves while doing it?

I actually don't mind selfies, and I certainly don't mind you recording bits of a concert that include your friends or girlfriend in it.

I'm talking about the people who go to concerts or events and essentially act as a living tripod for their phone to perch on. It's confusing to me on a personal level, and infuriating on a courtesy level (having the 10 rows in front of you all having their arms in the sky).

I'm not that old so I don't know but like did people used to take actual cameras to concerts and stuff? Was that a thing? (srs, not being a dick)

Oh for sure, you'd get a handful of people with cameras, but they'd just take a quick shot here and there, not be holding it up for 2 hours straight.
