Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire announced (Polygon embargo break?)

I guess Polygon broke the embargo. It's being Fig-funded. 1.1 million goal.

The team at Obsidian Entertainment is going back to the well, announcing Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire as a high-profile, equity crowdfunding effort through Fig. The campaign goes live today, and is seeking at least $1.1 million, with $2.25 million open for equity.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire promises to pick up where that game left off. A direct sequal, it promises to take the statue of Caed Nua, previously conceived as an elaborate sidequest funded in large part by Kickstarter backers, and turn it into the centerpiece of the entire game.

”Eothas ... the god of light and rebirth was thought dead, but he now inhabits the stone titan that sat buried under your keep, Caed Nua, for millennia," reads a press release. ”Ripping his way out of the ground, he destroys your stronghold and leaves you at the brink of death. To save your soul, you must track down the wayward god and demand answers — answers which could throw mortals and the gods themselves into chaos."

The campaign promises players the ability to travel by both land and sea, where they'll encounter new cultures and environments. Non-player characters will keep their own schedule, which will lead to dynamic quests. Some old party members will even return.

Obsidian even alludes to the fact that players may be able to carry over their save files from the original game to ”continue the story you began as the Watcher of Caed Nua ... and see how your decisions and actions in the Dyrwood persist in Deadfire."

On what grounds are you saying Polygon broke an embargo?

Obsidian has been hyping up an announcement that's supposed to happen 12 hours from now. I'm sure it was unintentional, but it does look like an embargo break (the post probably went live earlier than it should have).

How the fuck do you embargo a game that doesn't exist yet?

Uh, websites often receive press releases that are embargoed until a certain date/time. There are also embargoes for previews and sometimes even interviews.

Never heard of an announcement embargo. Just a "form of non-disclosure." Anywho, I'm excited for anything by Obsidian, they weave great stories :) not sure if I'm down to back it yet though, going to wait for some more concrete info.

Obsidian JUST tweeted a 12 hour tease, whoops.

Anyways, hyped! I'm not familiar with Fig though

That's a very nice improvement.

I can't wait. Pillars was the first game I ever crowdfunded and I was very happy with it, I'm really looking forward to this one.

Glad to hear this confirmed even if it wasn't much of a secret that a sequel would be coming. I backed the first game and I'll be happy to back this one as well.

Yup, either some automatic posting system or some intern accidently put it up too early.

I imagine its suppose to pop up right as the cooldown on the website ends.

Edit: I JUST REALIZED IT, their automatic poster system was set to 12 MIDNIGHT instead of 12 noon.
Some poor intern is gonna get fired over this.

This is why you should use 24-hour time.

Anyway, I never did manage to play through the first one, but I thought Tyranny was great, so I'll have to give it a try at some point.

For those interested, Obsidian streams quite a bit on Twitch. Josh Sawyer and Aarik Dorobiala have had four streams with Aarik playing Pillars of Eternity while Josh answers chat questions (a lot of which have been about gameplay changes we would see in a sequel). Josh seems to answer pretty much every question thrown at him so there is some interesting stuff there.

You can watch them here:

Lol 8 days of teases only to be broken by Polygon early. Oh well. I think people paying close attention knew the name and assumed there would be some kind of crowdfunding, most likely through Fig. I'll be there the moment it opens spending way too much money.

Meh. I was expecting the game to already be under full development and in advanced stages.
But if they are doing a crowdfunding campaign, it means the game is years away.

I'd say it probably has a year and a half of development time. Josh Sawyer has talked a lot about it, somewhat vaguely, for a long time now, although much of that was probably pre-production. That already puts it a lot further ahead than the first game.

I'd imagine it'll be like D:OS2 where it will have been in production for quite a bit already. And Josh has talked a bit about how much better/faster there systems should be at this point in terms of producing content.

That is a fantastic opening premise.

Reminds me that I actually need to make it to the bottom of Caed Nua one of these days >.<

So in. Nothing makes me happier than seeing oldschool isometric RPGs experiencing so much success RIGHT ALONGSIDE more modern-feeling entries in the genre.

I looooved POE but I never actually finished it... I should go back and do that.

Not familiar with Fig. It seems like this means Obsidian won't need Paradox for PoE2?

Some basics from the website

How Does Fig Work

Fig and game studios can raise development funds through reward and investment based crowdfunding. Funding is all-or-nothing, ensuring everyone — fans and investors alike — are able to support with confidence.

Rewards crowdfunding

Fans can discover new games and support studios they love through rewards crowdfunding. Please review our Rewards Questions section for further information.

Accredited crowdfunding

Accredited investors can share in the success of games developed by their favorite studios. Please review our Investor Questions section for further information.

Reg A Crowdfunding

Soon, non-accredited investors will be able to share in the success of games developed by their favorite studios. Please review our Investor Questions section for further information.

How does investment work on Fig

Fig's investment crowdfunding model provides an opportunity for ”accredited investors" to participate in the potential success of a particular game by investing in securities issued by a subsidiary of Fig which are related to revenues received from sales of that game. We're working hard to make it possible for non-accredited investors to invest in 2016. The investment opportunities are described in the investment materials provided to you.

If you are considering investing, please visit a specific campaign's investment page and review the investment materials provided to you, and carefully review all of the risks described in the materials..

They'd likely continue their very successful relationship with Paradox for publishing, physical rewards, and so-on. I also expect they're working on another RPG together (Vampire: The Masquerade).

The lighting looks much improved in those other screenshots. Ah now I'm too excited to sleep even though I knew this would be happening today.

So it's a direct sequel with possible save importing? So it'll be higher level content right off the jump, they are definitely going for a Baldur's Gate 2 scenario here.

Very exciting.

In a recent stream, Josh Sawyer basically said to keep your saves, so yeah, it's very likely, if not confirmed.

I do wonder about this. There are some outs for your character being knocked down in power written into that description, but it doesn't make sense with three returning companions that they would lose their power too. So I'm curious what level they start you at. 16 or w/e you could get to in WM2 was already starting to feel really really powerful.

I might've been up for a Kickstarter, but not a FIG. I don't like it.

Sorry, Obsidian.

On the bright side (I guess), I don't see how they can fail funding with FIG's investment option.

What's the issue with Fig? I haven't heard of it. I invested in Project Cars though and they're still sending me money in 2017.
