Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment (Kickstarter) [Up: Teaser]

Chairman Yang

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
lolol

but unless the turn-based play is like Tactics or Fallout I don't want to touch it.

Two posts by Josh Sawyer from the same Something Awful thread:

Yeah I've played FFT, Front Mission 4, Silent Storm, XCOM, Temple of Elemental Evil, and of course all of the Gold Box games.

E: Oh, and JA2.

And regarding action points vs. two actions per turn:

Action points offer nice granularity to different actions. I don't like D&D/XCOM style move + act or act + move systems as much. I also think there are cool things you can do with different phases like move/charge/act (e.g. Necromunda).

I just finished watching the Giant Bomb Quick Look. I skipped ahead on certain parts to avoid minor spoilers such as the world background and one puzzle. The user-interface looks incredible. I only hope you'll be able to keybind everything on the UI, but I can't imagine they'd ignore that. The text and narrative windows look phenomenal. We already saw a few of them at E3 but this just reinforces that notion. The amount of additional dialogue choices based on your attributes, background, or other stats makes me weep for joy.

This is infinitely better than this:

spiders make me sad but that was some dope ass shit

i really really like the interface, it looks gorgeous and really easy to use

i also really liked that culture and background thing, even going as far as changing your starting equipment.

that's really cool

I'm arachnophobic too, zyklon, but I usually find I don't get that squicky feeling (palms sweating, goosebumps, nervous shaking, etc.) with spiders in isometric games like PoE (both Path of Exile and Pillars of Eternity, HA!) - I guess Diablo II was a sort of baptism of fire in that regard.

3d games, on the other hand... I'm sort-of reluctant to play Skyrim again for that reason. There's even a quest I refused to play. And Dark Souls 2... ugh, I had to muster all my courage to power through that level and finally beat THAT boss. So yeah. I kinda feel your pain.

But still... Pillars of Eternity looks so amazing I'm willing to manage that stupid phobia so I can enjoy it.

as someone who will loudly squeal when encountering spiders

I can't say they have ever bothered me when depicted in a game.

for me isometric is worse since you get to see their whole shape

i don't enjoy first person either but looking at them from the front isn't as bad. tho there's the added element of limited view so if you get in a cave or something and you never know if turn your back and one will be jumping at you so that's not so great either

hopefully eternity's spiders will be modeable and i won't have to think about this

Looks great, the IWD2 inventory system could use a little improvement though, seems that Wasteland 2 was stuck on that for a while as well.

Hey guys,

Wes from PC Gamer here. We put out episode two of The PC Gamer Show today which has an interview with Josh Sawyer on Fallout: New Vegas and him walking us through the Pillars of Eternity Demo. Same gameplay footage you'll see elsewhere, but lots of different commentary since we kept pausing the demo to talk. Check it out if you want more Pillars.

Next week I'll see about getting the whole unedited demo, which ran for about 45 minutes, up on the site if anyone would be interested. Josh's commentary on the game is the most interesting bit.

Loved the New Vegas interview. I'm now redownloading that game from Steam thanks to that video.

As promised, I just put up our full Pillars of Eternity demo with Sawyer. If you've watched video of the game already you probably won't see anything new, but there's a ton of Josh Sawyer in here talking about Pillars, the character creator, Infinity Engine RPGs and so on!

Thanks for posting. This video is far more interesting and detailed than the other gameplay demonstrations I've seen for this game. Great interviewer.

Good video.

But does anyone else think that the starting costumes (and hairstyles) are some of the most atrocious looking designs of anything ever?

I mean... I get that it's starter gear. But shit, does the guy have to look like he's just stepped out of an 80s audition for some cave man porn?

*edit* Ah... it's just barbarian starter gear. But still terrible first impression of character models in this game. :p

I love both that every attribute is potentially of use in interaction sequences (thus enabling low CHA equivalent brutes to hew their own path compared to perfumed dandies) and that the high attribute gated options aren't always going to the "best" options.

It looks like you can indeed keybind everything

RPS: You mentioned during the presentation that it’s possible to see the dialogue options that your character can’t choose for whatever reason, but that the visibility can also be disabled. Can you turn off the indicators that tell you what the result – reputation-wise – of a choice will be?

Sawyer: Almost anything in the UI can be switched off. You can turn off combat HUD elements. You can even turn on Big Head mode, which I love ... Very early on I said that I’d always wanted to make a game with Big Head Mode, so here it is. But we have a ton of customisability. The HUD can just be portraits, playing entirely with hotkeys.

I posted it in the other thread and forgot to check this one. Excellent interview.

Regarding encounter design, is there anything in Pillars of Eternity that rivals or surpasses the complexity of some of the encounters in Icewind Dale 2 (Orc Shamans beating War Drums to summon reinforcements, Goblins falling off Worgs)? Will there be pre-stealthed enemies? Are there any new scripting features that were built for PE that made things possible you couldn't do in the IE games?

Honestly, I think it will take us a while to exceed the complexity of IWD2 fights. IWD2 and BG2 were built with a lot of tried-and-true scripting functions that programmers and designers developed over previous titles and expansions. Like any other feature, AI in PoE is being built from the ground up, so we have to add layers of complexity over time.

This is a little disappointing but I understand why this is the case. I'm still hoping Pillars of Eternity will be a showcase for RTwP much like Divinity: Original Sin is for TB.

They've already confirmed at least one expansion, so they might very well add more complexity there

No bald cap? Lies!
I'm actually getting more regretful and mad at myself for not dropping the extra $25 for the beta access, where before I was happy I didn't give into temptation. I know I have plenty of other games to play already and more before this even comes out, including DAI, but this is just looking so damn good. They're saying all the right things.

Ugh, you know, I've totally forgotten to submit a photo for the portrait. I'm pretty late. Wonder who I should contact about this.
