Pilotwings Resort being made by Monster Games

If the game failed to reveal to a veteran reviewer what was fun about it, then it must shoulder the blame.

Um, sure. We can go back through the history of game reviews to find some well known people who really just blew it. They review a ton of games. It's going to happen.

Yes, of course. It was actually a 77% average, but I suppose rounding up makes it sound better. Also, it wasn't actually reviewed by many European publications because it was never released here, so its average is artificially higher anyway. I tend to favour NGamer UK reviews personally, and they gave it 68%, which is broadly consistent with the Edge score given their relative scales.

...Are you just trying to be difficult, or obtuse? http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?search=excitebots&numrev=3&site=

And why is the average artificially higher because it wasn't reviewed in europe? Couldn't you make the exact opposite case as well? Tha the average is artificially lower because of it? And since when is 68% broadly consistent with 40%?

Either way, I think you're just flailing here. EB reviewed very positively, and was a very well made game. You were wrong. Again, it happens.

Also, can't wait to try out Resort..looks great.

So I take it that Holiday Wuhu Island is the only area in the game?

Either way, those screens are amazing
Yep. The glowing Eurogamer review said it's been expanded with more sites/details, though, and of course you can still explore during the day, sunset and night, and with a half-dozen vehicles, numerous camera angles (first-person, overhead), and you can take pictures and collect dioramas hidden around the island. And it's supposed to look fantastic in 3D.

This, plus Steel Diver... From the depths of the sea to the top of the sky! Plus, I'm so smitten with slick packaging that SSFIV3DE's lenticular display boxart has me tempted. :-\

The one thing that bothers me is how shiny the grass is, I know its not supposed to be realistic or anything, but the shiny glossy look of the grass is just odd. Somebody must have dumped a barrel of oil down that hill or something.

On another note, the fact there is not a single spec of draw distance fog is amazing.

Well, I was buying this anyway, but I'm happy Monster is responsible.

My biggest problem with ExciteBots was lack of custom music. Tipp City in ExciteTruck was awesome.

I don't get why Nintendo killed MP3 support. (Yeah, license cost etc. They weren't selling budget games.) Custom soundtracks made ExciteTruck and Endless Ocean for me.

3DS has mp3 support

It depends on whether the game supports them now

The shiny grass thing is common among Nintendo games lately, like Mario Kart Wii and of course Wii Sports Resort.

Wii Sports Resort also has no draw distance whatsoever, but I think that when you go to the golf island (at least when you are playing Wii Sports Resort Golf), the other island becomes a big 2D sprite. Also, if you spend a lot of time exploring the island (and paying attention to the volcano), you might see it's texture slightly change as you get closer to it.

But you won't notice it all if you are not looking for it.

Very surprising, this doesn't seem like the sort of thing they'd hand to an external dev (especially not a Western one).

Ummmm. Pilotwings 64 was developed by Paradigm Studios -- a western dev -- and it was beautiful.

Yeah, I was happy that Nintendo gave in on that. But I haven't heard about custom soundtracks.

They're not something I use all the time, but when I want them I really want them.

This and Steeldiver look so good. Will Getting both close to launch.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo said that It was up to the developers to implement an option for custom music being played, but that the option was available to developers.

So those Nintendo Power images... Game can't look that good, right? I mean the resolution and everything is so high.

They are bullshots (added AA obviously and the higher resolution) but from the videos I've seen, the game is certainly beautiful.

I'm not really so sure EXCITE love can translate to this game. Obviously there are a number of core things Monster should get right--ET and EB were definitely more than their incredible absolute nailing of how to use motion to make an exciting game--but PWR doesn't have any sort of motion control, does it? It was such a key part of what made the ET and EB so great. In a launch-window game, Monster singlehandedly validated and justified the Wii Remote by using it so ridiculously well, creating a feeling you just can't get pushing a stick around.

I always kinda thought I'd like PWR more if it had some motion control behind it (knowing of course that the screen moving with your hands makes this difficult), but now I want it way more.

The overall look of the game is kind of odd I think. Judging from the posted screens it seems they are mixing semi-realistic environment textures with heavily stylized characters and objects, and the result is messy and disjointed.

It looks weird, seeing those shots of Wuhu Island with no Miis around on the ground.
Giving the island will be flied over by fighters and other flying squirrels, it probably is a good thing!

blah I had planned to only buy 3 titles at launch now with all the positive stuff around this its slowly becoming 4 titles.

So as someone who never played the other Pilotwings games, can someone explain, beyond nostalgia, why I should be excited for this? I am considering this as my launch title buy.

I'm more then hyped by this game (being an EXCITE fan now even more...), but that's frankly disappointing news.
It's just proof of unforgivable laziness IMHO, most of the fun in Pilotwings 64 came from the sense of exploration of the locations.
