seriously multiple copies? equally as retarded.

The Best Buy near me got 7 copies of Casino Royale on the first day. They sold out to ONE guy at 10:00am as soon as they opened. The manager asked him why he was buying them all and he said "Got to help keep Blu-ray ahead of HD-DVD"

I wonder if Best Buy, Target or Circuit City will have bargains on this box the week it comes out.

I will order from Amazon tomorrow as it is the best deal I have seen, but I just wonder if any ther outlets will have deals.

You're probably better off just getting it on amazon anyway. They put 30 percent off their movies, which is more than you'll see at a retail outlet.

THis thing is BEGGING for a HD run through. Reconsider.
1) No HD player
2) No HD-TV

I'll have an HD-TV later this year, but no HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player. Probably won't for many years.

What about the idiot "Blu-boys" who bought MULTIPLE copies of Casino Royale in stores on launch day? One guy bought seven. Both sides do retarded things like this.

LOL, you see one guy that did it at your Best Buy and suddenly everyone does it. Thanks for the insight.

Hmmm, Mana, who rails on BD "virals" has no comment on my post re: the sales surge as guerrilla marketing ploy. Funny that. Guess it's OK for HD-DVD to employ those tactics, just not BD marketeers.

Where the **** did I say it was OK? I said both sides do retarded shit like this.

wait so basically this just your conversation with a Best Buy employee? do you have more proof than that? I mean i am not saying you are bias......but you are. cant really put anything past HD dvd fanboys after this.

Blu ray backers seem genuinely offended and hurt :lol

whatever, I"m glad Planet Earth is doing well (highest ranking ever by a HD film on Amazon). From what I've heard, it deserves it. I haven't ordered it yet (money issues), but I did pre-order Lost in Translation.

Happy Birthday HD DVD :D

Slightly off topic, but related nonetheless, I just got done watching two episodes of Planet Earth (Jungle & Fresh Water) and was devastated to find out that it was missing the incredible soundtrack featured in the 15 minute Amazon.com preview trailer.

Amazon Trailer

Seriously, the song at the beginning of the trailer (during Angel Falls), got me so pumped for this series, but when I watched it on the Discovery channel, the song was noticeable absent, which I personally felt took away from the experience.

The same goes for the birds doing the cool mating dance. The soundtrack is such an important part of the viewing experience for me that I guess I was just let down to see it missing from the actual show. :(

IÂ’m still planning on buying the Blu-ray version though. :)

I haven't seen a single episode, unfortunately. But I like nature documentaries and everything I've heard indicates this is a top notch one. Can't wait.

edit:

When you get the HDTV (and assuming you have a 360), you'll be able to get in the HD disc format for about $150. Considering I paid $160 on Ebay for my add-on, they should be very cheap by this holiday, so it's something to think about. On a disc like Planet Earth, you'll eventually want to see the HD version with your HDTV, so it's something to consider. Both gaming consoles allow you to get into the HD formats comparatively inexpensively. A person with a 360 is just one small step away, while a Ps3 owner is already there. :)

The American version has been modified from the original BBC version. Sir Richard Attenborough was replaced with Sigourney Weaver as the narrator, and some of the episodes were edited to remove some scenes of animal death. Also, the episodes were aired in a different order. I'm guessing that maybe the music was changed too?

That's all going to be back on the home video releases, as we're getting the original unaltered BBC versions.

You sir, are hilarious. :lol

I'm watching an episode of Planet Earth right now, and I can't say that I'm impressed with the quality of the HD. The cinematography is great, but everything looks a bit fuzzy. Is this PQ consistent with the show overall, or does it vary from episode to episode? I've seen shows on Discovery HD that are breathtaking in their clarity (the shows focusing on insects tend to have a terrific HD picture), but Planet Earth just seems lacking.

2 things, your HD picture can very due to your cable provider. I know that is the case as ESPNHD has been outstanding at times and then other times, it looks like crap. Same with 'I Shouldn't Be Alive' on Discovery HD Theater.

#2 - because of the nature of the show, and being filmed in extreme conditions, I think the quality is just going to vary. At times I do wonder if all of the show was filmed in HD or is some of it getting upscaled from SD footage. I am almost sure that is the case. With that said, overall I think that the show has looked great. When they were doing the mountains episode, I was couldn't believe how good it looked.

Either way, the HD-DVD version should be a heck of a test. It might look consistently better on that format.

19.6Mbps, the maximum bitrate for your typical MPEG-2 high-definition broadcast, just ain't all that much data for the codec. I was watching Underworld Evolution on MPEG-2 Blu-Ray the other day, and was surprised at how well some of the most demanding shots held up. Sure enough, according to the PS3 OSD the bitrate was spiking as high as 30Mbps when things got crazy.

The show was shot in native HD, in 1080i, 1080p, and 720p, with a little bit of 35mm film.

I bought the HD DVD version, no reason. I have both formats, both cost the same. I just picked the first one I saw. AND I have the entire series on Tivo Series 3.

It almost makes up for no Rome.

[Sobs at lack of Rome..]

alcibades is to hd-dvd what brimstone was to miami vice and shadowrun

That would be true if brimstone was supporting miami vice and shadowrun only because he hates the rival to miami vice and shadowrun products (whichever these may be).

And what an irony btw. Manabyte who is notorious for accussing the "Blu-boys" of using questionable tactics to determine Bluray's sales superiority, instead of attacking efralope for making such a ridiculous thread he tells us tales of a mysterious customer that bought many copies of the same movie and generalizes it to all the "Blu-boys" (seriously wtf?). Oh Manabyte....

yeah, casino royale blu-ray only did well because fanboys bought multiple disks. kinda like how the ps2 only sold over 100 million consoles because it was so unreliable.

in other words *yaaawwnn*

Never actually pre-ordered anything from Amazon before but don't they charge you when the item ships not when you pre-order?

Yes, and there was plenty of discussion on the AVS thread about how this could be abused to make HDDVD 'sales' figures even better on that day.

Ok you pretty much nailed what i was thinking :lol. That info pretty much sums up the thread.

but but but teh nilson scanz :lol
nah seriously what really matters is the overall sales and bluray has like 70 percent market share, and with next month's big hitters it can only stretch

ManaByte said:

Yeah, throwing in an anecdotal example of BD viral marketing or whatever is *really* giving the AVS forum HD-DVD iniative what-for!

Somebody at AVS was trying to get Blu-Ray buyers to do the same in retaliation. I mocked him for it.

Of course, I never would have known about it if he hadn't, because unlike so many of those guys over there, I don't read the HD-DVD forum since I only have Blu-Ray capability. It's as bad as a console fanboy fight over there, tons of people who are obsessed with the 'other side' and who have to watch and troll them constantly.

This whole thing is a big indication that there must not be enough high def movie software to keep people busy yet. :lol

Well, that and how meaningless these sales charts are if one little sub-forum can swing rankings like that.

Whether or not this is buy HD DVD day or what, the HD DVD version of Planet Earth has consistently been outselling the Blu-Ray version for the past month. Just another week or so until I get mine.. WEE!

You're as bad as Brimstone when it comes to HD-DVD.

I champion the incredible game design in Shadowrun. Close to half a decade I've posted on the "GAF" forums in their different incarnations. During this time span I've expressed my opinions on various great games and books. Carnage Heart is a game I've brought up many times as well as the Sci-Fi/Fantasy books my Lois McMaster Bujold.

Shadowrun is the direction shooters need go on consoles: more depth.

Don't you mean David Attenborough, Richard is his brother, a famous actor.

Yeah, later on in the same episode during certain scenes the PQ of the HD improved greatly, so you're probably right on all accounts there. Low bitrate from cable provider, varying conditions, different cameras for different scene setups. None of this took anything away from the show itself, though. I'd love to see the Attenborough-narrated version.

The effort was joined by at least 2 other forums out there - forum.teamxbox.com and forums.hidefdigest.com, so it's not too ridiculous for some effect to have been felt yesterday... that said, HD DVD has been trending up since late March...

Why is this thread open? If I created a thread about the Cincinnati Reds beating the Cubs, it would be locked. There is already a thread for Blu Ray or HD DVD wanking.

Disc format fanboys - the scariest fanboys of them all

When I researched which DSLR camera I should buy I found out that there are in fact camera fanboys!! Canon, Nikon etc.. :/

I ordered the HD-DVD version today. I did the 2-day shipping. I am looking forward to getting this set.

OMG. This talk of HD disc format fanboys is hilarious. I never though such a thing existed. I guess you learn something new each day about the internets, and how silly some people can be. :lol

What's even more sad is that their "crusade" for HD-DVD is only going to screw themselves over in the end. They're the ones putting out the money, and in the end they'll be the ones who pumped all that money into a dead format. I don't even know what to say to such a thing. It's just funny, in a really pathetic way.

Also, before any of you go pointing a finger at me as being an Bluray fanboy, i'm only speaking on a the evidence we all know exists. The majority of studios are already behind Bluray, and it's gonna take a small miracle for HD-DVD to win out in the end.

Well it's not as if the discs they bought will cease to work.
