Playing fighting games with a controller: Analog stick or d-pad?

I don't play on pad anymore, but when I did I used d-pad. Conversely, it was the PS3 and 360 controllers that made me switch to stick. What fucking awful d-pads.

I don't know. Analog stick can be frustrating but the 360 pad is so awful I use the analog stick anyway.

D-pad. However, I use analog stick for the 360 controller because I don't like the pad for that controller. I find it easier doing shoryuken motion with a pad, but if I want to perform a 360 motion, I'll use the analog stick.

I can go either. Both have pros and cons. It is far easier to input double button commands, like in Tekken, with a stick setup. However I think directional taps are quicker with a pad because of the shorter "throw". Lastly, curving inputs like fireball and 360s can be done with either, but take a LOT more practice to nail down on pad IMHO.

D pad, but I'm awful at fighters and on the xbox one controller it is a lot easier to pull of some of the more difficult combos/moves.

I play exclusively on pad, but I know some people that alternate for certain motions(Tiger Knee motions), I've been trying to incorporate it into my gameplay.

For charge or grappler characters I can see analog being better, for everything else D Pad is millions time better, it's not even a contest.

I got Street Fighter 4 on PS3 instead of 360 so I could use the Dpad
SF4 was my only game on PS3 for many years... (except Wipeout)

Keyboard.

Or as a more serious answer, analogue stick. Mainly because I own a gamepad that unusually uses a square gate for its analogue stick - a rather old Saitek. As a bonus, it has 6 face buttons too, almost as though it was made for fighting games.

As everybody else, depends on the game. If I'm playing a 2D Fighter, Dpad, most of the times, those games need more dashes and multiple presses, though Circle Motions can be kinda frustrating at first.

Most of the 3D Fighters, Stick is sometimes better if they use a 9 way style of moving, a la Soul Calibur, or DOA. Although Virtua Fighter is back to Dpad because it's played mostly on the 2D Plane with sidesteping everywhere.

Can't stand D-pad on any controller for fighters. I've gotten reasonably okay at KOF13 on controller with stick, but the moment I have to try and use the D-pad I drop everything.

Arcade-Stick for life, though.

Anybody have any experience with the hit box? No stick just buttons

Depends on the controller. If I'm forced to play with a 360 controller, I'm using the analog. D-pad is for anything else (unless it's Smash).

A) don't play fighting games with a controller. I learned it the hard way.
B) if you absolutelly have to, then use D-pad.

For me, using the d-pad is absolutely necessary except when I'm inputting Ivy's Summon Suffering and Calamity Symphony in Soul Calibur 4 and 5.

usually dpad.

quarter-circle character? sometimes analog stick.

depending on the character i will be limited to specific comboes and supers/ultras. like for example, i cant use dpad for qcf motions on 2nd player side, so i quickly do it on the analog to activate super/ultra.

im learning arcade stick to get over that problem.

When I played Street Fighter IV with a 360 controller, I used the stick for everything. It annoyed me though that my movement was suffering so I switched to a Wii U Pro Controller and used the d-pad.

So, d-pad so long as it's a good one.

D-Pad to keep things faithful to the originals, but "Joystick" for the arcades

#SORETHUMBS for life :D
hadouken+snes controller

I keep asking the same thing myself. Back in the day D pad was the best decision, but all that changed after trying the glorious Soul Calibur. Now my brain is 50-50.

I got to try one and I basically need to buy one before I can play fighting games on console. I pretty much destroyed my hands for several days on multiple occasions trying to play UNIEL with a controller, I simply can't hold it normally to play like I'm used to, because I have a few hundred hours of melty blood on PC. I got to try a hitbox at a con here and I picked it up almost instantly because I was so used to the keyboard style of play, but I hear most people have issues with it. I liked it, your mileage may vary.

D-pad, definitely, I need it to feel the exact moment of the input.
I only use analog for special moves like full circles (even "fireballs" are easier on the d-pad for me), and those are quite rare with the kind of games/characters I play.

In theory, dpad is better because most fighting games are designed around digital inputs, not analog. However, if you feel more comfortable with the analog stick, use it. It's mainly a matter of personal preference. And to answer your question, if I can't use an arcade stick, I won't play.

tried playing on the 360 d-pad and analog when i got mvc3 but did not enjoy it at all. got a madcatz fight pad and it was a much better experience. still have a ton of problems with the pad but i don't feel like learning how to use sticks or want to bother using another pad.

definitely d pad as long as its a ps controller. but some lunatics can make it work. doesnt snakeeyez use 360 d pad? i guess it doesnt really matter you just have to get used to something.
