PlayStation 5 and next-gen Xbox might launch sooner than you think

So I listened to that webcast and Devender is literally saying this will be a shorter cycle than the last one.

Cerny is probably locked up in some bunker crunching numbers RIGHT NOW.

Yup.

I thought 7 and 8 years was too long, though I understand some of the reasons why it had to be.

This time 6 years would be ideal for me.

If they can offer complete backwards compatibility, it should be a nice seamless upgrade.

I think last gen went on so long and with economic, technology of the time, cheap and lower powered was the only wise choice for these consoles which aren't really built to have long legs.

I think both console makers see this generation as a sidestep into the right technology fast lane that can be built on long term with a legacy of software. They just have to start at the bottom.

They are probably going to "brute force" next gen. Will just throw in a similar APU with more transistors at a smaller process, with backwards compatibility.

Hope they throw in some extra oomph for stereoscopy and ray tracing.

I would be absolutely shocked if the PS5 wasn't x86 based.

My prediction is that:

Sony next console will just be and upgraded version of the current PS4 architecture.

100 percent backward compatible

Designed completely around VR.

I agree 100 percent. Especially with the PS4 looking like such a hit and Cerny remaining in charge of the PS5 architecture, I would expect all of the perceived good decisions about the PS4 to carry over to the PS5.

X86 architecture helps with ease of development and thus will help keep development costs down over time and allow for more cross platform games. Keeping the same X86 architecture also allows for backwards compatibility.

I would also expect moderately powerful but not overly expensive hardware. With many Sony divisions struggling, I expect that the company is very happy with not taking a loss on PS4 hardware. With the PS4 and Xbone entering the market with slightly underpowered GPU's, compared to the PC market, it should be easy to get the usual 8-10 times increase in power without breaking the bank.

Given the above, and noting that the PS4 has a 1.84 TF card, I would expect the PS5 GPU to be in the range of 15-18 TF range with a balanced architecture and plenty of RAM.

Umm, okay? Didn't the PS4 reveal mention how they started on it months after the PS3 was released?

I doubt the actual launch won't surprise many, especially with how quickly consoles can be beat out by PCs. Of course, current gen will still have a decent lifetime before the next generation.

Yeah, next-gen consoles need to keep the same PC architecture so everything is backwards compatible and cheap to produce. I hope the days of consoles being so different from PCs are over.

I think they will shift to really low power inexpensive handheld to mainly be used to connect to PS4/PS5 and play simple games (PS one, PS Vita, PSP). It won't have first party games, will cost less than 100$ when released and it's battery will probably last long as its chip will consume very little power.

This is the only viable way to go for Sony's handhelds.

I'd be happy with that.

I buy a new $600 phone every two years, and even then I'm skipping an upgrade in between. I wouldn't mind yearly console upgrades, as long as games are guaranteed to work with like the last 5 years of PlayStations.

This is why I'm happy to be on PC now. Console generations always seemed so short. I'm much happier plugging new bit and bobs into my old workhorse then adjusting to a new UI and Controller every 5 years. Plus no backwards compatibility problems, I can go load up Doom right now.

People are already spending $500-$600 on these things when they come out, there's no reason why they can't get a decent starter PC at that price and go from there.

Do we know how well Knack did commercially ? The game got mediocre reviews that justly reflexted how the game seemed to play, but I thought there was potential in it, and a more refined sequel could maybe deliver.

How much sooner? ... I wouldn't mind skipping this gen so I can play all the hd remasters in VR next gen...
J/k.... OR AM I NOT?

It would be nice if they launched in 2019. Six years is the sweet spot for a console generation IMO.
Agreed. Six years feels about right.

Both the PS1 and the PS2 were six years, weren't they? PS3 was seven years and it felt too long, and the 360 was eight years, even worse. On the other side, the Xbox lasted only 4 years, which is way too little IMO.

So yeah, between 5 and 7 years is OK, and 6 is perfect.

I wouldn't expect 15-18 TF. Its more reasonable to expect 6-9 Tflops.
