Playstation Display for $299 at BB.com

There is no meaning to bomba. Technology in these days goes down in price so quickly now no one can know for sure how it's doing.
*cough*

Let's say a big box retailer ordered an average of 20 of these displays for each of their locations. Before this promotion, said retailer has sold and average of 1 per store. That's bad. That's real bad.

*cough*

I just don't see many people hooking up their PC and PS3 at the same computer desk. Most people use a PS3 as a Blu Ray or streaming device as well and 24" makes this useless for those options (not to mention the functionality limits the location of the monitor itself to areas that are not conducive to those things).

It's a product that painted itself into a corner that really limits its use. Seems like a complete waste of money for the consumer and R&D.

i dont get it... not everyone is "most"... obviously it is for people who use same monitor for PS3 and for PC use... not everything has to appeal for the masses.

Right now my PS3 is hooked up to 22" 1080p TV... it is ok for TV, but it sucks as a monitor. My Dell 22" is much better at being a pc monitor.

so is this coming to europe? when?
and i still don't get if it's a good deal or if it's any good quality-speaking...i mean, i was interested in buying, cause i'm interested in 3d but i don't have lots of space, as i would put this on my work table in my room, not in the living room where i have a 40" tv...then I would connect to it my ps3 and my laptop, as i already do with a samsung 1080p 22". I'm kind of statisfied with my actual tv/monitor, but , as i'm very tempted by 3D playing, is this going to be THE product for me?
i know that lots of you think this is too small, but as I don't have too much space maybe this would fit me...dunno guys, so is this not of a stellar quality? are there any alternatives (even in the immediate future, i wouldn't buy a new tv anyway before next march) max 30" with 3D? i've checked that LG monitor as i love passive 3d, but reviews are not very kind with it...very confused guy here :D

The newest HDMI spec allows for 1080p @ 120Hz, if I'm not mistaken.
[anal]

3D does not use 120Hz. The encode method is known as frame-packing. Essentially it's two 1080p images stacked on top of each other with a 45 line active blanking space separating the two images, sent at 60Hz (24Hz for movies). ie. 1920x2205p60 or 1920x2205p24.

[/anal]

As far as 1080p60 FP being in the single-link HDMI spec, yes it was included in the HDMI 1.4a optional specification. HDMI 1.4, and even 1.3's, mandatory bandwidth has always been sufficient to support it. The problem is nothing currently supports that bandwidth. The currently available HDMI Tx and Rx parts aren't clocked fast enough to do it.

I've heard some early rumors pointing to some high-end TV's doing it next year (maybe we'll get info at CES soon). So assuming this is true, it looks like Silicon Image is finally fabbing parts clocked high enough. I wouldn't imagine we'll see many displays at first though - and they will be premium devices.

A corollary of this is I don't think anyone's GPU actually has a fast enough HDMI controller to support it. So not only would you need a new TV ... but a new GPU as well. This is why nVidia Vision uses dual-link DVI.

It's a hardware limit with 1.4. I'm just saying since it's not officially supported by Nvidia, I'd verify he was also able to play at 720P @120hz. Because if 1080P @ 48hz is the only working option, it's not much of a gaming solution.

What the hell were they thinking ordering 20 per store? Seems like this was one of the few products that everyone knew was going to be a tough sell.

Well at least you admit you're being anal.

It is a hardware issue. It doesn't matter whether it was an optional thing with 1.4 if there's no 1.4 hardware that's fast enough. Clearly 1.4b is focused on the hardware side. And it's going to be supported.

As for the bit about 720P @ 120hz. Again it's semantics. Is it like an LCD monitor that can do 120hz? No. But many people automatically associate passive with halving the frame rate because you need to supply left-blink-right to get one real frame. It's just a way of saying, yes, 720P is fully capable of 60fps and isn't gimped like 1080P currently is.

I don't think it's coming out in Europe anymore, and you should probably go for passive 3D from what I hear.

The whole situation with 3D right now IS pretty confusing! No one seems to agree on which is best when it comes to passive vs active (both have their issues). I thought a passive IPS 3D TV or monitor would be best, but it turns out that it might actually not be the case since it would be more expensive and give about the same results (for gaming anyway) as a non-IPS TV or Monitor. I would wait until they figure out how to eliminate ghosting/crosstalk/color bleeding for good (assuming that wasn't already done/ is even possible) to get into the whole 3D thing. If you do want to try it out, I'm hearing good things about the LG DM2350D ( available in Europe). Although, I can't say how it works for 3D gaming since I don't have it myself; I'm just going by "word of mouth".

so, is this a worthwhile pc monitor (3D aside, fuck 3D)?

Looking at what's out now...... Probably not.

it'll keep going down :D let's go $100-$200

Lol yeah! I want to eventually be paid to keep this thing!

Im sure it's doing bad, but did anyone, including Sony, think it would do good? Seems foolish.

And this is coming from someone who owns a 3D monitor and loves it. It's a fantastic technology. But $500 for it? Come on now. Even $300 is more than I paid for my LG passive 3D monitor on amazon.

I'm 99% sure that $95 Canadian deal was fake. I'll be all over this sub $250 canadian if we get a boxing day bomba.

It wasn't fake man:

I placed that specific section in tags because it is only important for those that want to understand how things work. It was simply informational - as you say, it has no impact on how things perform.

That however is not true for what follows. HDMI is simply a specification. It states things that are mandatory, but allows some feature-sets to be optional. While at a high level that may sound like semantics, it really isn't.

When you say 'it's a hardware issue with 1.4', that's simply not that case. It's an issue with what's supported in current hardware. Why does that delineation matter? If one is browsing for a display that supports 1080p60 FP, by following your statement they will see HDMI 1.4 or 1.4a and simply assume it isn't supported. That of course will not necessarily be the case. One will actually have to look at the itemized specification to see what really is supported.

It is a hardware issue. It doesn't matter whether it was an optional thing with 1.4 if there's no 1.4 hardware that's fast enough. Clearly 1.4b is focused on the hardware side. And it's going to be supported.
Will companies potentially jump to 1.4b support en lieu of offering an 1.4a display? Possibly, but I'm not sure 1080p60 FP is even mandatory in 1.4b (though it's obviously optional).

The point here is that we could certainly see 1.4a displays that support 1080p60 FP. So to simply assume it can't means people could be skipping displays that actually have what they want.

The point here, and what really complicates things is that stores and even CE specifications do not even always state whether something is 1.4a or 1.4b. Sometimes they don't even state 1.4 of any type - they just list the number of 'HDMI' ports. In other words, dig into the actual supported resolutions and 3D modes ... which actually is advertised. Otherwise you don't know what you're getting.

My 'no' was in reference to it being a HW limitation. It isn't one of the specification - it's one only of current released displays.

It's supposed to be laggy (5 frames of lag according to SRK), so don't get it for gaming, guys. Too small to watch TV in it also, so... Yeah.

That was never posted.

Looks like the command appears on screen 5-6 frames after it is input (counting the input frame as frame 0.)

Based off digital foundry's testing, this would suggest 1-2F of input lag, I think.

This was also posted in the neogaf thread on the 3d display.

I did instore pick up and tried it out with a few games on PS3, 360, and (thanks to DoctorWho's guide and .inf link) on the PC. I tried Uncharted3, Mortal Kombat (surprisingly cool looking), and Killzone3 on PS3. Gear3, BlackOps, and BatmanAC on 360. Then Crysis2, BF3, and Skyrim on PC.

So far nothing has really amazed me. The biggest issue I have is that consoles significantly downrez - Gears3 in particular. After hearing so much praise for its use of 3d, I was disappointed. UC3 seems to be the most complete package in terms of 3d support. I found it necessary to change the games brightness, as the shutter glasses are noticeably dim.

Design wise, the glasses are not obtrusive at all. They fit OVER my bulky psuedo-hipster glasses, so that is a plus. The display itself it surprisingly thin and has a really good hefty feel to it. I am annoyed that the screen goes to sleep after 15 minutes or so of inactivity. This wouldn't be an issue if I simply moved the mouse and it would wake again. But when it does go to sleep when idle, I have to reach back and press the power button on the back of the display. With that said, I don't mind the lack of a remote. I am a foot away from the monitor anyhow. It takes little effort to reach back and diddle the screen a bit. I complain about it, but (insert Louis CK "everything is amazing" bit here).

The preset settings needed a bit of tuning, as the default is cooling with backlighting jacked all the way up. Which brings me to my want of multiple custom presets. I would like to have 2 custom settings, one where I can get a good black W/OUT glasses and another where the brightness is high to compensate for the shutter dimming.

I'm quite happy with the purchase. The display is gorgeous-colors in particular-and the 3D is pretty nifty. It sounds pretty good right out the box too. My only real complaint is the lack of a remote, but given the size of the TV I can see why it was omitted: if you're more than a couple of feet away, you're doing it wrong.

Sony's PS3 Blu-Ray remote. Works instantly on this monitor no problem.

I learned the hard way that almost any Sony remote will work with this unit. I have a Sony TV in the same room that I have this display and I went to turn the TV on and it shut this display off. Now I have to be real careful where I aim my remote.

Tried this today. 3d didn't seem as good as on my 3ds. What gives.

Are you serious? I find it way better. Download Super Stardust HD and be amazed at the 3-D. FPS games make me feel like I'm there. You can see the distance from the back of the gun to the sight. Distance just feels real. It's incredible.

Finally got to try out my display with most of my 3d games. Came away quite impressed. I must say, Wipeout HD was fucking amazing in 3D and earphones. Also played a few chapters in Uncharted 3 as well and damn was it pretty. The 3D really makes everything pop. Overall, for $300, I'm really happy and satisfied with this purchase.

I blame Sony itself for this bombing.

They never make it specifically clear that this is a monitor and NOT a TV. You can use it like a TV if you have a cable box, but not an antenna.

Their displays look like they weren't set up properly. They have this blue hue to them and they focus too much on the "simulview" thing.

You have a display of your 3D monitor with glasses and you show NO 3-D on it! Instead, people wear them and have to press the top button to see the picture change to the other racer. Big Deal! The affordable 3-D is the most important selling point and they should have focused way more on that. Do you know how odd it is to go up to a 3-D display, put on glasses and see NO 3-D? What a poor way to sell a monitor.

Just picked one up for my desk this afternoon. I am very happy with it, the 3D in Uncharted 3 is impressive to say the least.

Picked one up for PS3 and PC use.
Big upgrade over my 7 year old Dell 24" widescreen (don't mind sacrificing the TV tuner).

Just set mine up and played some Wipeout. The 3D is pretty decent though I doubt I'll ever use it again. I can't complain considering it was only $95 for the display. Picture is pretty decent but the sound is really flat. Big upgrade over my CRT even though there's a bit of back light bleeding on the edges namely the right one.

I hooked up my cable through component and the HD looks great and the blur isn't as distracting as previous mentioned.

8/10 for $95.

5/10 for anything over $95.

So Liquidus, I read about the whole return receipt was $399 here http://forums.redflagdeals.com/sony-playstation-3d-display-bundle-95-g-list-1117360/34/

That's pretty amazing, I would of returned the TV and got 300 back from the whole deal.
I have to admit that it was a dick move on my part. I even went back to FS and spoke with the manager about it. I wanted to pay them back but they didn't know how to do the paperwork so they said fuck it.

Besides the high pitch noise it makes it's not too bad of a display. I've been playing GT5 on it and haven't noticed any lag problems... same with DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero.
