PlayStation original programming starts with Powers TV series.

Deadline reporting.

Sony’s PlayStation video game console is the latest digital platform to enter the original programming space. Its first show will be hourlong drama Powers, based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. The series will be produced by PlayStation sibling Sony Pictures TV, where the project had been gestating for awhile and went through several incarnation at FX, including a pilot. Powers for PlayStation represents a brand new take on the source material, penned by Charlie Huston. Returning auspices sony-playstation-logoinclude Circle of Confusion as well as Bendis, Oeming and Michael Dinner who will executive produce with Huston and Remi Aubuchon (Falling Skies), along with Circle of Confusion’s David Engel, David Alpert and Lawrence Mattis. Huston and Aubuchon will serve as showrunners. Combining the genres of superhero fantasy, crime noir and police procedural, Powers, whose order is said to be around 10 episodes, is set in a world full of people with superhuman abilities and where all of those powers are just another catalyst for mayhem and murder. The series follows Detective Christian Walker, who is in charge of protecting humans like us and investigating cases involving the God-like men and women, referred to as “powers,” who glide through the sky on lightning bolts and fire and who clash above cities in epic battle, oblivious to the mortals below. No start date is set yet for the series, which is expected to be of premium cable quality. SPT will sell internationally. The studio already has experience producing for digital platforms — it has a 13-episode order from Netflix for a drama series from the Damages creators.

PlayStation joins rival, Microsoft’s XBox, which announced Halo as its first original scripted series a year ago though the project doesn’t have a green light yet.

Info on the Powers comics.

We'll see if Sony, via PlayStation can crack the show that FX struggled to get off the ground.

I'm embarrassed to say that game tester reality show was wildly entertaining. Not sure about this

Powers is a great comic. Looking forward to the show.

Weird venue for it, but I'm glad it's been revived.

So what are the chances of Delsin or Cole being shoehorned into this somehow? I honestly wouldn't mind that.

Were you on the season with Egoraptor? That was the best one

I was! Poor guy was edited to hell. But he's incredible. I played Motorstorm Apocalypse with him for hours one night, just shooting the shit.

He's as smart as he is hilarious. And a really humble, nice guy.

They should of done a InFamous TV series

First season ends with Cole defeating Kessler

Season two premiere begins with the Beast intro

There you go Columbia/Sony Pictures

Powers is a great comic series!
Really excited for this news even without the consoles ties.

Although I'm not sure the source material can transition well to live action.

Sony beating msft at their own game lol never saw the original programming thing happening on ps4 before xbone.

Though it is bizarre, it's pretty easy to see how Sony have managed to pull this together faster than Microsoft. Sony are an established force in the tv ad film industry, whereas Microsoft is having to learn these things from scratch.

FX gave this pilot multiple serious attempts over the past five years (recasts, reshoots, rewrites with new writers) and never picked it up to series. There's probably a good reason why.

There is also a good reason why Sony Pictures wants to do it. Their movie division might be fucked, but their television division does some amazing work...

As long as it is bundled with PS+ or offered at a reasonable price then I might bite. Pilot needs to be free though.

That's awesome.. Question: do you game primarily on PS now because of your personal experience with the brand being on the show or do remain neutral when it comes to console preference?

Powers "Forever" arc is one of my favourite comic book arcs of all time, and one of the most memorable origin story. The series seems promising enough.

Just saw this posted on FB by The Verge.

The show will be produced by Sony Pictures TV, a separate Sony entity behind shows like Breaking Bad, Masters of Sex, and Hannibal. Powers has been in development at the company for some time, and previously made it to the pilot stage with FX. There's no time frame yet on when the PlayStation series will begin shooting, but Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton told the Journal that the show's budget will be in line with programming from the likes of Showtime or HBO.

It's just the latest television move from Sony, which has pivoted sharply from its gaming-focused PS4 strategy in recent months. In January the company announced that it would be bringing a cloud-based live TV service to the console, but according to the Journal's report Powers will be available simply through the PlayStation Network itself, allowing users to stream the show to their console in a similar fashion to Hulu or Netflix. In the United States it will be exclusive to the PlayStation Network; internationally, Sony Pictures TV will be selling the rights to broadcasters.

Apparently it's been in the making for a while. Hopefully it's a faithful adaptation of the comic series. Once again the non-Americans get a short end of the stick when it comes to non-gaming entertainment on the consoles. I wish they'd release it here through PSN as well, as it'll most likely take ages to reach here via the broadcasters, as usual.

I was reading about this earlier and trying to figure out why they were planning to do shows. I know they talked about it at E3 but it's still weird to me. We all made fun of the TV TV sport sport of the Xbox so it's interesting to see Sony sorry of get by by not talking about it allot but do the same thing. Hmmmm. M

Who here asked for Sony and Microsoft to make TV shows? I know I didn't.

Sony has been doing other forms of media for awhile. Plus it's no extra charge for them to get a tv division like Microsoft as it's been there to be used. The fact that they have a proven department that's given us Breaking Bad and Hannibal has me excited of where they may take one of my fav comics.
