Playstation Portal Unboxing

People still keep posting the same shit again and again huh?

The device is what it is. You might not be in the target group and that's fine, move the fuck on.
Especially when it's something that's just $200.
People pocket watchin over an amount I could blow on any weekend without a care in the world.
Hold on, I gotta go charge my wii fit balance board and attach my joycon to the ring.

Steamdeck has got me playing handhelds again, and I don't really use my PS5 (not sure why) but I did setup Chiaki4deck on the Steamdeck to try remote play - it was really good, except sometimes the screen glitches and goes green like something out of the matrix, but the latency was really good.

If this thing works flawlessly I might be tempted to take a punt for $200. Although it looks like "My First Handheld from Tomy"...
I have this same issue. Its a Chiaki4deck bug. The normal Chiaki app doesn't have this problem.

Why is the VGC review saying you need internet for this to work? Seems lIke they've got a few things wrong.

Can't watch any of the videos, but has anyone Compared the remote play between the portal and another device? I'm interested to see if it's the same experience, or a little less lag compared to using another device.

what will this thing do better than my iphone as a screen with my ps5 controller?

Adam Savage's review says that using a Wifi 6 enabled phone is a tad faster. But it's identical so running remote play on Steam Deck.

It's not for travel and portability.
At least it's a hand held with good controller and big screen for once.
I think it's more like "sick in bed" and "my life sucks and wife won't let me use the tv" device.
I want to get it just for no reason. It's pretty cool. Shame no oled :(

The sticks look smaller but he says "identico", so I guess it's just the perspective

I bet 3rd parties will make carrying cases for it and they'll sell big if the price is around $20-$30.

I have a feeling amazon warehouse deals will be full of these from unsuspecting customers that return them. Worth keeping an eye out.
You may be onto something as looking through comments on some of the review Tweets I have seen people saying things like "Getting this instead of a PS5" or "Bought this for my kid even though we don't own a PS5"

I think many parents are likely going to be fooled by this without reading the box

Silly question maybe but...how is company prepared for a device like this which is purely dependent on someone's home network connection quality ?
I mean, this isn't a case of experiencing slow download speeds while trying to download something on your console due to a poor connection. This device will simply not function correctly if your home network is unreliable.

Take also into account that people with good home networks have varying experiences which range from "excellent" to "a stuttery mess" and...

It's really a hard sell for them, methinks the return rate for these is going to be huge

If your home network doesn't have 5mbps free, then you are running on outdated or insufficient WiFi hardware.

If signal strength is the issue, then you should be able to afford WiFi repeaters for your property.

So, apparently it doesn't have/support wi-fi 6 ? Fucking hell, Sony cheaping out once again...

Mentioned it in a couple of my previous posts but, for me, wi-fi 6 on my Sammy tab S9+ seems to make a (big) difference* compared to the other 2 devices I have in my house (iPad 5th gen, OnePlus Nord 5G).

Anyway, let's take a look at those reviews...

* when it comes to connection strength/image breaking up/macroblocking/distance of client device from my router

Well, that other thread is going exactly as I thought, people with zero interest shitting up the thread just because 'console war', grrr, me angry gamer, no-one else can like inanimate thing I hate, grrr. Mild Shock

What was being said about 'constructive' criticism again?

My devices some wifi5, some wifi6 behave exactly the same on my network, wifi 6 has a higher gbps download but that's all as far as I can tell, there just isn't any noticeable difference (for me) on mine (I do have wifi 6 (BT Disc) boosters all over my house)

where is it stated that this can connect directly to consoles without your WiFi network or Internet, like the Wii U controller?
I recall early previews stated it - more importantly every Playstation RP device to date could do this - if Sony's backtracking on it ... welp, that's even more bizarre.

Really want this or steam deck since I played a fuckton of FF12 and Skyrim just because they were on switch... Cannot justify it as my screen is right in front of me; if I buy this; it will change very little in my Gaming still tempted AF.

Ordered one, if latency sucks I'll return it. Once again the dream is playing destiny 2 on the shitter…. Steam deck was so close…
You will return it or deal with the slight lag. I have tried FPS games like Destiny over remote play and i didn't like it but i had my Duel sense connected via Bluetooth so that might have caused some more lag. Good thing the Portal is connected straight to the screen and they got rid of Bluetooth for connection to the device cause i think the signal cause lag more lag.

I use remote play with a cable controller connected to a laptop, it's still enough delay to be bothersome.

Yeah haven't liked remote play in the past but always hope it will work well.

Anybody know where the best place to go to snag one of these on Wednesday would be? Gamestop says is reservation only. Best Buy or Target dont show it in the weekly ad.

Wondering if Walmart, Best Buy or Target will have in for walk in customers?

Oooh, mine says 'Parcel is being packed', they can deliver it tomorrow if they like, I wont mind. (it will be Wednesday but good to have confirmation)

Mobile devices with a larger screen do exist, you know.

Also, I am interested in a Sony handheld. Just not a glorified tablet for streaming. PS Vita was a fantastic handheld, and while I understand why it's less risky for them to go with this half-measure instead of releasing a proper successor, I still can't believe that they would offer something this shitty instead. And even more baffling is how guys like you would eat this up without acknowledging that they could've done a far better job.

Larger devices are more expensive and also require external controllers, and in most cases are then 10-11 inches and become cumbersome.

I totally agree that Sony should have launched a true portable instead, but the glass is half full, not completely empty. Once you accept that, you can look at the product for what it is. Honestly it's biggest failing isn't that it isn't a true portable, it's that it lacks an oled screen and has no cloud function or other apps, at least so far. But pricing was an issue.

The video with Norm from Tested did. He said his iPhone was ever so slightly faster but they were all really close to one another.

I'm not sure the bolded is true.
It's a PS5 gamepad with a display on it to see the game using Remote Play.

Of course it's true, it doesn't have native games and as of today to use remote play via phone internet isn't good enough.

Which means it's designed to play on it while someone else is using the tv, or to continue playing PS5 games in the bed or the toilet. It's a remote play device, not a portable console.

Oh.....I'm planning to mainly play it while at work, which has 50-100 MBs download speeds via WiFi (depending on where I'm seating). Or to my folk's homes that have stable WiFi. So to me that's still "travel" worthy. But yeah it's not to be used on an AirPlane or while in random store X.

Dude atleast it's got games running natively on it as a hardware platform, unlike this Portal device. I get XSS is causing a lot of trouble for multiplat devs to get games to perform efficiently, but this ain't it!
Yeah XSS is great for a lot of people. I'll never understand blind fanboys.

Well, being at work (not in a plane or a car), using a decent wifi and good enough internet connection on both sides and not far from home it should be playable in genres that don't require super precise inputs or reactions.

The experience widly depends on the internet connection, and wifi/router quality. Today found a case of a guy I know who did test it here in Spain connecting to a console of his friend who lives 1000KM away. Both using a good fiber internet connection (hundreds of megs on each side), with the console wired, and a decent router properly configured for the wifi where the PS Player was (plus making sure they didn't have any other device connected to internet on these LANs).

In some other cases instead the experience is very bad while trying to play at work in the same city, a couple kilometers away, or even inside their own house when having (I assume due to awful router and configuration, maybe with a lot of interferences or with different devices taking bandwith while remote playing).

And well, always playing in single player games, because online MP via remote play sucks since obviosly the streming requires a lot of bandwith.

The streaming experience is pretty similar to doing remote play on a decent enough (wifi5 or better) phone or table with a DualSense connected. I suggest you to try remote play at work on a phone, tablet or Steamdeck before buying the device, because the streaming quality will be pretty similar.

So the s is potentially detrimental to an industry, as has been claimed by many devs, by causing issues for multiplats and the Portal has absolutely no effect on anything software-related. And, is strictly a companion device which requires little to no overhead and will work for as long as your PS5 works.

Too late, I pre-ordered the PS Portal LOL!

All Sony needs to do is sell the PS Portal to 1% of the whole PS5 base within the first year and this device will be fine for them. If they manage to add cloud streaming to it in 2024, then bump that number up to 3% by the end of March 2025.
