I'd say so. I decided to purchase Tetris for PS3 a few days ago, and I'm pleased with it. I especially recommend it if you have any intention of playing the multiplayer modes.
The single-player modes in this version of Tetris are very similar to those found in the Minis version on PSP, with the same variations and (as far as I could tell) even the same goals. I was a little disappointed that it has the same background music as the PSP game--not that the music there was bad, but I was hoping they'd offer something different here. Although it shares much in common with the PSP version, there are online leaderboards with lots of filtering options (weekly or all-time scores, worldwide or just your country, everyone or just your friends), and of course,
trophies, yo!
Where PS3 Tetris shines is in the inclusion of online multiplayer. Shared mode allows you and a friend to play together cooperatively on a slightly wider playfield. One player takes the left side, and the other player takes the right side, and you're mostly restricted to placing pieces on your side of the board, apart from a two-unit-wide strip down the middle which is fair territory for either player. You and your teammate will want to match each other's pace (don't drop blocks much faster than your teammate if he's slow), and you can even swap pieces with your teammate.
There are also competitive modes, such as Battle and Timed Battle. Battle involves 2 to 6 players, and you're each competing on your own playfield to clear lines quickly. There are optional power-ups, and you can hinder your opponents by temporarily changing the rules of their game, such as having a playfield that shifts blocks horizontally (like the Treadmill variation) or darkening most of the playfield other than the area immediately underneath the falling piece (like the Flashlight variation), or not allowing quick drops or swapping pieces to the "hold" area. I was playing this mode yesterday with three other buddies for nearly two hours, and it's great fun!
Timed Battle is for 2 players only (I think), and sets a 2-minute timer to the game. If your opponent's stack reaches the top, then you can score a "knockdown", which resets the playfield for him. The goal is to score 3 knockdowns in 2 minutes, or at least more knockdowns than your opponent when the time runs out, but if you're even on knockdowns at that point, then traditional scoring decides the winner.
Team Battle is for 4 players, separated into 2 teams of 2 players. Players can decide whether they want to be "attackers" or "defenders" Attackers are the only ones who can send lines to their opponents, while defenders are able to clear lines from the bottom of their team's playfields. This is a fun mode to play, but one drawback I've found is that there doesn't seem to be any way to team up with one of your PSN friends and face another random team in cyberspace--you've either got to make a "friends only" private game, or join a public game with no assurance your friend(s) will come along for the ride.
There are also multiplayer modes for players in the same room, although I didn't try any of them myself.
When all is said and done, it's a very worthwhile purchase. Those who already have the game on PSP and don't care at all about multiplayer or leaderboards aren't going to find much new material here, but for anyone else who cares about Tetris, this is an easy game to recommend.
