PlayStation Store Play 2014 - Rogue Legacy, The Swapper, Hohokum & CounterSpy

Oh man, Rogue Legacy is going to be this year's Terraria for me. I am going to spend countless hours playing this, I can already tell. Do I really have to go to work tomorrow?

How is Rogue Legacy compared to Spelunky? Thanks.
Very different games. While the only progression in Spelunky is in your own skill level, Rogue Legacy basically requires you to find new upgrades and equipment, as well as money to buy those and level ups for your characters until you're strong enough to beat a boss. RL can seem more grindy because of that. Yes it is possible to beat RL without any upgrades and they aren't strictly needed, but the game was obviously designed with them in mind.

Randomness and luck also play a smaller role in RL since you can overcome anything with strong enough equipment and high enough levels, while in Spelunky success often depends on your item luck.

It comes down to what you enjoy in a game. I think Spelunky is superior to RL in every way, but people who don't like the idea of real permadeath and prefer light RPG elements might disagree.

Thanks for your answer.
I think I've not "undertood" Spelunky yet. You all say it is wonderful but I don't get the point. Maybe is the random generation philosophy that I'm not able to enjoy yet.

Has this game the classic scheme of defined levels? Such as Ghouls 'n Ghosts?

Maybe you'll like Rougue Legacy more then, but it's hard to say. It still has randomly generated levels that change every time you die, but you get to keep money and equipment you found in a run.

There is some kind of level progression in RL, since it has four distinct areas which should be beaten one after another, but each area is just a random combination if rooms and enemies that you have to got through until you find the boss door. If you die you go back to the starting area and buy upgrades and try again.

The point of Spelunky is that it's 100% skill and reaction to your environment. You can't just learn the way through 1-1 by heart, since it changes every time. You can't grind levels until you have enough health to just brute force your way through enemies. You really have to understand the game to beat it. In RL, the brute force method of grinding until you're strong enough often works just as well.

I'm copying and pasting my post from the Rogue Legacy OT in case some of you in here bought it but aren't in that thread. This is just a heads up if you're using the cross save feature between vita and console:

LClDChq.jpg

Read it carefully. If you just finished a session on PS4 and are trying to move to Vita, you need to pick NO here so that your Vita will download your PS4 file.

You also have to do this when you're moving from Vita to PS4 and you also have to pick NO there, as well since the prompt is worded exactly the same. It's actually worse going from Vita to PS4 because on the PS4 prompt the cursor is defaulted to "YES", so make sure you're not just mashing buttons to get through the prompt.

For those who beat Rogue Legacy on Vita. I beat it with 102 characters (seems on par with other first runs), something around level 190 (seems high, but I was consistently clearing out the castle in late runs, getting 20-55k). A lot of my early runs were short until around level 100. My last 15 or so runs, I beat the three last main bosses and final boss. Game says 41:05 played when beaten. This does not seem right, especially since I've only had my Vita and the game with me for about 48 hours beforehand. I played quite a bit (felt like 15-20 hours), minimizing the game in standby when not playing. Does the time played continue during Vita standby? I am testing this out now, but thought I would ask. It seems 41 hours is approximately how long I had the game on for, including standby. If so, this would be the first game (Vital or 3DS) that does this.

Also, how does NG+ scale? NG+1 is kicking my ass.

So does Rogue Legacy have any sort of endgame or win state? The gameplay looks like fun, but if it's just an endless spiral I'm not sure if I'm up for it...

I think there must be something wrong with the clock as I got the 20 hours trophy at a time when it would have been physically impossible for me to log that many hours.

I am totally, totally in love with Rogue Legacy. I'm not sure whether I love it as much as I love Spelunky. But Rogue Legacy is fantastic, and it could wind up being the 'tiny' game I spend the most time with this year. Just totally awesome.

I'm really stuck on whether to pre-order any of the other three games (at 20% off). I've never heard of them. I'd like to make use of the sale price and the free store credit, but only if I'm buying something that I'm really going to play and enjoy. Anyone else in a similar boat? On the fence?

Fired up the PS4 this morning and it said "Hohokum Added to Downloads" and before I could yell "Awww yisssss!" it followed up with "Hohokum cannot download" :(

I'm sure it was all in error but it served as a reminder that this game comes out on Tuesday. I can't wait! I've been listening to the OST at work for the past week and have been looking at some of the dev interview videos, art-of, etc... This was one of the titles that I picked up my PS4 for and I finally get to play it in two days. Fucking word.

I went and preordered the lot straight away, because I'm a sucker for that $10 rebate. Rogue Legacy and The Swapper (so creepy) have been great, and there is no way Hohokum is going to let me down, so I'm happy so far. Well, as happy as you can be playing something like The Swapper.

Y's Hohokum 3gags big?!
And after that is Counterspy. Which I don't intend on buying but some good reviews and impressions could change my mind. Then the week after is iF:FL, then after that is Velocity 2X and the PS+ games, then after us Destiny and what I would presume would be some indie games I've been looking forward to that's don't have a release date.

You know, I had very little hype for the game up until this past E3 where I started to here a number of impressions from people (e.g. Gerstmann) that had played the previous build and then the E3 2014 build and came out of the latest build really impressed and excited for the release. I already knew RL, The Swapper, and Hohokum were titles that I wanted, but the latest round of positive impressions surrounding Counterspy were enough to push me towards purchase.

I timed it; Rogue Legacy time played includes time that the game is minimized, including during Vita standby. The game must be exited completely to stop the counter.

Why is there no Hohokum OT?

It's up to you, good sir. Wish there was soundcloud integration in posts so that you could put some of the OST tracks in the OT as well.

We need some suggestions for an OT titles...

Hohokum |OT| Ghostly International Presents...

Hohokum |OT| Ride the snake, ride the snake

Hohokum |OT| /ˈhōhōkəm/ noun (informal); 'Prostitute nonsense'

Man I can't do it. OTs are always so nice here. The pressure I can't handle it. Maybe if I'm at work tomorrow and I have a few hours to procrastinate. But if anyone wants to go first be my guest.

Hohokum |OT| I'm seeing things you wouldn't believe.

Unless it turns out to get <70 on average, then Hohokum |OT| Hoho-hum
is too good an opportunity to pass up.

Does anyone know when the Hohokum embargo ends? I'm interested in the game, but it's so abstract, I'd like to see a few reviews before I pre-order.

Uhm:

Hohokum |OT| Hoho's Bizarre Adventure

It's the best I have for now ):

You know, I have more than 35 hours of gameplay on Rogue Legacy on steam. Should I get it for my Vita and PS4 anyway? I still have like 3 achievements to go (I'm not a trophie/achievements whore but damn this game is addictive)

Yup, I'm pretty positive on Counter Spy as well.

Pre-ordered Hohokum and definitely also getting CounterSpy.

Is Swapper on Vita any good? (Like 19.99 good?)

I'm curious as to when the new Velocity game arrives, as well as, Odd World N'n'T for Vita...

Can we talk about how awesome this promotion has been? All three games so far have been home-runs and getting PS+ discounts and the $10 credit back has been killer. Sure the prices have been high to start with, but basically paying $45 some odd bucks and getting $10 back has been more than worth it for the three games we've already gotten, even if Counterspy flops.

Really enjoyed this promo, I don't recall it being as good previously. Is this a once-a-year thing?

I really hope counterspy doesn't suck. About to preorder it for 11 bucks while I can. Can't find a review or gaf impressions of it.

I'm also wondering if sept will have a sale like this since galak z and other indie games has to be coming out soon right? RIGHT?!
