Playstation VR GDC Presentation: March 15th

I'm pretty certain this will be cheaper than the Oculus and Vive but I'm worried at just how much the UK price is going to be...

The leaked Goldman Sachs VR equity research estimated the BOM of PSVR to be at $350. I'm not sure if that includes the camera BOM but I expect a minimum price of $399.

And sanity has returned. Never thought for a second that this thing would be $299.99 or $349.99. Those are mainstream prices and this product is for enthusiasts. $399.99 is fine for me and I'm definitely day one.

For the record $349: HMD and Camera, no HMD SKU without a camera; possible HMD + camera + Moves for $399

I don't see the base HMD SKU being outside of the $299 - $399 range

Been saying this for months, hopefully moment of truth in a few weeks time.

Keep in mind that if the Goldman Sachs estimate is right, it's only for the bill of materials. Manufacturing, R&D, camera, and whatever profit they want to make could easily push it another $50 or $100.

Its one of the saving graces for Sony, I can imagine the street GBP price to be now where near as bad as trying to import an Occulus from USA.

Sony will be more international is my guess and better for us UK customers, I am expecting $ 399 and £ 330 if they dont totally screw us on exchange rate

Interested to see what the gaming lineup will look like since it will be vital to PSVR success.

I know this would never happen but a PSVR version of Shadow of the Colossus would be insane.

given that it's GDC, i hope they announce that the PSVR will work on PC as well. I think this would be huge for not only moving more units but also for helping the mass adoption of VR as well.

Leaving it as a PS4 only device will really limit its appeal to the consumer who is looking for just one VR headset to buy.

It also muddies the Console VR market space.
For example, if 1 million people buy PSVR, but only 100,000 are actually playing on PS4 and the rest are on PC, then PS4 developers aren't going to be making a lot of potential sales if 10% are actually PS4 players. Keeping it purely PS4, it ensures that developers will know how many people own PSVR and can begin to invest in the market when it's big enough and not develop a PS4 VR title that needs say 250,000 sales to break even, when <=100,000 would even have the opportunity to buy it out of the apparent 1 million sales.

Numbers are there for arguments sake, but Sony and developers wouldn't benefit if they marketed PSVR for PC.

It was originally unlikely to happen, and I think now with their breakout box it'd be even more unlikely - they'd need to write drivers for it to work because they seem to use the HDMI cable for data and not just video to send the 3D spatial audio data which is then processed by the breakout box. So I don't know how technically feasible it would even be to support it on PC.

I'd imagine it can pass audio through without processing if they want, that's all it needs to be pc compatible. I don't really expect it to be supported officially but someone will get it to work if they don't.

They're not going to cannibalise their revenue by supporting PC. It's just not going to happen, officially at least.

I can however see them supporting 360 .mp4 playback, just as they do with regular mp4 to satisfy the porn enthusiasts. There wont be some sort of adult VR store on a PlayStation product (no matter how profitable it could be) so this is an indirect way of supporting it.

I can also see them having a VR app with other interesting VR experiences.

While the marketing decision is clear, on a purely technical level I might prefer a 2560 RGB stripe display over a 4k pentile one.

Vive and Oculus are both using 2160(/2)x1200 pentile oled. PSVR has 1920x1080 RGB oled (it has a higher sub-pixel level as each pixel-stripe is a RGB-RGB.. pattern, a pentile is RG-BR-GB-RG..). PSVR kicking above its weight.

I'm surprised this event isn't getting much hype.
It's brewing. Been some big other news lately: UC4 trailer & mp-demo, Xbox-platform changing, Windows UWA, HTC Vive per-orders, Nintendo direct and No Man's Sky release details. This was a huge news week.

Maybe it's better now, but I'm pretty sure BOM analysis put the Vita at well over $300 and it ended up coming out at $250.

Interesting. And now I can understand why's that GearVR didn't fix it much, even their smartphones have an extreme high resolution than Rifts.

I'm wondering about the price, but I think Sony based in Japan have access for the 120hz mobile screen R&D whereas Korea might be lacking on that. So I won't be surprised PSVR using Japanese screen.

Hopefully that release date will be sooner rather than later.

Interestingly, the forthcoming 3.50 firmware contains health and safety info for using the VR headset.

This will be more expensive than most hope, but less expensive than some fear. I'll go with 379 for a no-move set, 499 for PSVR, cam, move and an additional game, 699 for a set including PS4.

edited a game into this

Sounds good to me, only I would think the base unit would not go over $349 because that’s he price of the PS4. If Sony is selling this as an upgrade to PS4, it shouldn’t cost more than the base console.

With a bundle and games sure, but just the head set alone should be comparable tot he base product. No way to shake the stigma that its an add on, even with all the “this is a new platform” marketing.

Still, they only plan to sell 2 million, I think they can get more people that that with PS4’s to buy one if compelling games are available.

The middle one would be a really bad deal, you could buy a camera and 2 moves from Amazon for less right now.

Maybe, I didn't really check beforehand, just going by gut feeling :) Throw in a game then!

400€ the Headset alone and just a sticker in the box with the PS Camera is needed and sold separately.

I don't see sony making another bundle other than maybe a PSVR+PS4+Camera+DS4. for like 700€

I don't see the PS Move controllers bundled at all.

Wether Sony go out and support Pc or not it doesn't really matter. There will always be some person or group who will make it work on Pc eventually.

I think Sony will play this like they do with all their PS hardware. Units sell at a loss while making dollar on the attach rate. Vive and Oculus it seems are simply trying to make money from the hardware and because there's no license costs on PC going back to those guys the initial costs are quite high.

If the PSVR headset itself is anymore than £250 or $300 I'd be surprised as it would indicate a huge shift in their strategy.

Anyone seen this? Sorry if posted elsewhere...

The next upcoming version of PS4 firmware contains VR advice - not suitable for children under 12. https://t.co/SpBE8vxUVC

PS4 firmware beta includes health and safety advice for VR..! Could PSVR be getting that "first half of 2016" release after all?! REALLY hyped for this 15th March event.

After the success of Vive preorder, my guess is that PSVR just became 50 $ more expensive.

If No Man's Sky is indeed available for PSVR, they could charge 599$ for it and still have trouble delivering enough units.

I've been saying this all along as well, aye. Mind, I'm prepared for a shattering disappointment. ;)

£349 is my guess. Surprised no insider hints yet

I'm in the UK too. I'm hoping/budgeting for £350 max. If it verges towards £400 I'll be amazed quite frankly. Just bought an S7 through Samsung directly and they had a credit method that was pretty reasonable, pay over 2 years and costs 15% more than buying outright. I don't know why more companies don't offer options like this. I know Apple do too actually via Paypal Credit although interest is a bit higher I think. For purchases such as this it would be great to have a decent credit option for it direct from Sony. A lot of people might not be prepared to plump down £300 or so on VR off the bat. I am but I'm very much an enthusiast who's been waiting for this since it was announced.

I still think UK pricing could be pretty reasonable, I still hope and dream of a headset only option for £250, with a £350 one with camera and possible moves and/or a game bundle too. Up against US pricing it tallies up with expectations over there of hopefully $350 to $450.

Can't help but feel some folks are in for VR sticker shock going by a few posts in this thread. I really doubt it's going to be priced at a mass market sweet spot out of the gate, and it doesn't have to be.

Megaton, make a new thread.

Preorders go live on the 15th, and release in June is my guess.

I'm absolutely desperate for a VR No Mans Sky announcement. Unless the price is daylight robbery I'll be on it day 1 like crazy if NMS can get support.

It's the perfect fit and Sony would be mad not to throw resources like crazy at it to help the small studio out.

I can't believe the PS4 has the power to transport a standard, great looking PS4 game to VR. All Demos so far have been more than noticably inferior to regular games in terms of graphics and/or extent of environment.

And by "regular games" in this case of course I mean generally good looking/AAA ones, not the occasional pixel indie title. Only exception so far on first glance would be that Driveclub title, but so far we have no idea how big, extensive etc it is.

That said, I'd be immensely happy to be wrong :)

I'd happily take a knock in graphics fidelity. I'm sure NMS will introduce a lot of great masking techniques for hiding/introducing draw distance, so I have to believe it's possible to do a VR version. It's the perfect match.

IMO it's more the colour palette that makes the game look great, than any insane texture work.

Look at Golem for VR. That runs at 90fps. NMS just needs to hit 60.

If they are doing this event now, you think it'll be release by mid summer?

Also, whats the cheapest viable VR option for PCs right now.
