The new character designs look way better in game than they do in that artwork. Prehistoric Groudon looks amazing in game. Mega Sceptile looks fantastic too.

If Steven only uses Mega Charizard X in the battle introducing you to Mega Evolutions that's kind of alright by me, it makes some sense to showcase the feature using one of the most popular ones.

If he's still Hoenn Champion and uses it in the final battle that's where my issues will lie.

Oh. Looking closely at both designs I see what you mean, but yeah, it's probably just a product of the bandana hiding most of her hair originally.

I am really curious about the trainer customization. In X/Y, it felt like I was customizing some unnamed character to look like whomever I want (e.g. me). However, if the new game allows the same level of customization, it would feel more like I am dressing up Brendan or May. (Not really a bad thing, but I wonder if they'd let you have the level of control to make those already established characters look completely different.)
