So the rare items you can buy in Black City you can slowly find for free in White Forest over time?
That is correct, yes.

Black City is useless, essentially.

Also, since we're talking about starter choices, I've gone with Water every single generation. The fact that everyone picked Charmander when we were kids made my Squirtle completely decimate, and I've had a soft spot for water ever since. That won't be changing with Generation V.

Reasons to buy White:
I get to punch Iris in her stupid face
It has Zekrom
The version exclusives are cooler
Makes filling out the Pokédex easier

Reasons to get Black:
It's Pokémon Black.

Aww, why the Iris hate?

how far into the game do have to go before you can catch the bad ass american eagle

He doesn't appear till the route leading to the Elite Four...well, his pre-evolution.

Black and the Fire starter for me, although I went with Piplup in Platinum (which I don't count since it's not one of the initial two generation games).

How far in is Axew if thats the case?

I need someone to trade me an Axew at the start of my game so that I can have a actual bro-rate Pokemon with me on my journey instead of one of those "starters". >_>

Yeah, don't hate!

Well, you can't get Axew until after the sixth gym, so...

I might get a water starter but give him an everstone in his 2nd evolution (but evolve him before elite 4).

Humm, at what point can you start trading Pokemon anyway?

Cause I'm boxing w/e starter I get the first chance I get at a trade for Axew.

(Or I'm everstoning the otter once it evolves and making it a 2nd rank Pokemon on my team until I get a Eagle)

My seething hatred for Best Wishes stems largely from her.
I like her.

She at least doesn't act like she knows jack shit about Pokemon (like Ash half the time) and Axew is far better then Ash's Otter.

I'm pretty sure you can trade as soon as you reach the first Pokemon Center. If you hit me up around release, I'll trade you an Axew egg from my Black Version.

How far in is Axew if thats the case?
It's actually in an optional area...after Hodomoe City, the 5th Gym, you head up through this forest route...there's a cave you can reach with Surf where Axew hangs out.

Later you find the first Muskedeer (they were recently confirmed to be based off the Musketeers, speaking of which, so that seems like a fitting fan-name), Cobalon, deeper in the cave post-E4

I know for a fact you can't migrate Pokemon until you beat the game, but I'm unsure as to when exactly trading becomes available.

Haven't played a Pokemon game since Pearl, haven't beaten one since Sapphire. Should be fun to get back in with Pokemon Bla-

-ite. Is this the only comparison list that's been posted on which version is better? I'd like to know what you guys think is the better version. Honestly though, the quoted list seems more like personal preferences, except for the Pokedex one. Is it just that or is there anything clearly better?

*Edit*

Nevermind, should've read a bit more down that page before posting. Thanks for the picture though.

Well, I'm making Axew my starter.
I'm not gonna be able to play the games until I get my 3DS in late March so I hope someone can be kind enough to save one for me!

Its a cave Pokemon? Damn ... gonna be hard to shiny hunt. :/

It's all really subjective when it comes down to it. No version of Pokemon is ever objectively better than the other.
But Izayoi posted this visual list of what's different between the two versions on the last page.

I usually pick the Grass Starter as well, and I did in Black, but I actually ended up not liking the Snivy line for some reason...like, they just don't interest me. Especially Servine, the middle form...it's just really awkward looking in every medium I've seen it in, be in Sugimori art, TCG, anime, or sprite. And I usually love middle forms.

Tepig has pretty much become my favorite this time around, and is behind Turtwig in terms of favorite starters. Specifically Pignite. Love that dude.

Oshawott is also pretty cool...I think the reason so many people disliked it at first is the awkward Sugimori Art, which gives it a boring look. It got a lot cooler when it was shown being bad-ass wielding its shell around like a sword. Same with Samurott...the sprite doesn't show it, but there's official art from the PokeCenter and even a toy that shows it whipping out a sword from its arm. Too bad the animated sprites couldn't show that...atleast Dewott's animation shows it pulling off its shells and whipping them around.

True, I haven't played Pokemon in awhile, I seem to have forgotten this. Well, I guess Black version it is then. I'll have to wait until 3DS comes out before I can play though :/

Importing Pokemon from Gen IV games.

I'm pretty sure trading with Gen V games can be done at any point after obtaining the Dex.

What is pokemon migration?
The new Pal Park, basically. You're taking Pokemon from one of your old games and transferring them up.

Zzoram said:
Is it me or is it weird that the mascot for White is black, and the mascot for Black is white?
Yin/yang.

The game is full of that kind of symbolism.

Is it going to be hard to fill out the pokedex in B/W if we don't have any previous pokemon games on hand? How hard is it to trade for all the older pokemon?

Either way it's going to take a while. I don't know if there's a limit per-day on the transfer of old Pokemon like there was in Pal Park, but if there is it will still take almost three months of transferring six per day for the perfectionists like myself.

But I can say that yes, it will definitely be way harder to fill out the entire Pokedex without the older versions. You'll have to trade for a lot of different Pokemon, and trading is very time consuming, even when the person you're trading to doesn't expect anything except derps.

The only time Gamefreak has released a Director's Cut version less than two years apart from the main pair was with Crystal, and that was still a year and a month of separation. In every single other case, the game was over two years apart. I just don't see them releasing it this year. If it was only a 3DS-enhanced title (again, which I don't see them doing because there have been no signs or news of games being able to do something like that without having two separate carts) then there's an incredibly slim chance we would see it by the end of the year, but I honestly don't think that Nintendo and Gamefreak operate the same way they did ten years ago.

This is also the only generation to be released on the exact same hardware since RBGY and GS (although GS were clearly Color titles.) Gen 5 isn't analogous to anything else. I believe Gray could be announced this year, if it's coming at all.

wasn't that daily limitation of the pal park eliminated with soulsilver/heartgold?

As ugly as the fire starter is, I can't break tradition. I'll pick the water starter in Grey and get a grass starter traded to me.

Yeah, the Pokemon Transfer machine in Black and White is pretty efficient...no limit, quicker than Pal Park (it's a simple mini-game where you throw Pokeballs at the Pokemon), and overall was much easier to use in my opinion.

The only downside is you'll need two DSs to use it.

No, there are two downsides: Can't transfer Pokemon with HM moves, and you can't transfer Pokemon with items.

>:/

But it is a huge relief to hear it's quick and efficient. I have 493* 'mons to transfer!

*well, 492 right now, still need to pick up Celebi.

i've never done palpark so i don't know how either operate. if it's a minigame where you're throwing pokeballs, is it possible to miss getting one and it not transfer over ever?

Would also like to know if missing screws you over

Oh, I don't doubt that it will be announced this year.

I just doubt that it will be released this year.

That's fantastic news. I'm getting a 3DS so I won't have to wait too long to start transferring my Pokemon over. I only have a single DS Lite so I never had a chance to test it out myself. Thanks for clarifying.

You can trade Pokemon online. You can only transfer locally.

No, no, no. You will be able to transfer everything, even if you miss. GameFreak wouldn't do that.

Well, the Pokemon move around through bushes and stuff, but you can keep throwing Pokeballs until the time-limit is over.

If you don't catch all the Pokemon, they're sent back to Gen IV, but you can try again right away without penalty...it's not hard either, since before time runs out, an item pops up that puts them to sleep.

EDIT: Oh, and one more thing, it's region-locked...but I don't know if this will apply to, say, American vs. PAL.

So, I couldn't transfer Pokemon from my English Diamond to my Japanese Black. I think this only applies to Gen IV - Gen V transfer, and I imagine Gen V to Gen V trading will be region-free like it was in Gen IV.

They're always released the year they're announced in Japan (well, except for D/P I think.) If it's announced in the next few weeks then it's coming out this year.

Great.

Are we going to have a friendly tournament early into the game? Just a fun, no worrying about EVs, fight with whatever your current team is, tournament?

Just wondering since I really havent had the chance to have a normal impromptu battle since the old link cable days :P

Hmm... the next few weeks? That seems like an awfully busy time for Nintendo as it is. You'd think they would wait until the 3DS launch has blown over, right?

I would be game. Are we looking at level ranges or how would it work? I know some people can really power through it and it would be pretty disadvantageous to those who take things a little slower.

Firestorm is supposedly doing just that.

Thought you guys would enjoy this. I've been rearranging some Pokemon music to pass time and relieve stress. Mostly battle themes and mostly from Hoenn, but non-the-less: Hoenn Wild Pokemon Battle.
If you want to hear more they're all in a playlist. I think I have only have Team Magma/Aqua to go before I've completed all of Hoenn's battle themes, then I got some town music I'm working on.

Black and White's battle themes are awesome as well. I love the BAK-A-BAK-A-WROW-WROW in the rival music. :D

I would so be down for one.

I'll go with the Water starter like I tend to, but I'll also be starting-trading-restarting a few times so I can have all three starters in my team like I usually do. Assuming, of course, if you can still trade reasonably early like in previous generations.

So close now.

If it wasn't for the fact that I get all three versions, and thus like to use a different starter in each one, I've always wanted to do a run where I use all three starters at once...
