New gen I just try to play the game with the normal names since it will help me know the Pokemon better. But for Pokemon Grey, I'm nicknaming every Pokemon I catch.

Also I always nickname Pokemon that I use for competitive battles.

I've always nicknamed my Pokemon. Like Kipp the Blastoise, Icarus the Torkoal, George the Gengar, Titus the Electrode and Winston the Scizor just to name a few. It's getting harder and harder to think of good names for them though.

I sometimes resort to pun names or obscure references, like Gardebro (male Gardevoir), Pikablu (Azumaril) Amparo (real spanish name applied to an Ampharos) or Red Mamba (Ariados).

To the people who are saying to get an ice pokemon from earlier gens, why not just teach a gen 5 pokemon an ice move regardless of its type? Even my feraligatr in soul silver dominated dragon types with shitty ice fang. If I used a tm with ice beam or blizzard I'm sure it would've been even better.

Fuck using gen 1-4 pokemon in black/white lol I want to use the new ones.

tried this back in RBY, it didnt feel right so I returned it back to the original name, never gave a nickname again...

Tried it once while playing the Gen 1 remakes. Found out I don't have a creative bone in my body to name them, so never again.

I know this is largely subjective, but what's the "theme" of this game like? I really enjoy the adventurous music/environments of Silver/Gold, and found the jazz/playful/whimsical nature of Diamond/Pearl really killed my enjoyment.

What does Black/White feel like?

I do, starting with Gen IV. After breeding for good IVs, the correct nature and ability, and then EV training a pokémon it just felt really impersonal to call them by their species name.

Sometimes it's really hard to come up with a good nickname, and a few Pokémon (Lucario) have good enough names as it is. At the very least, I always decapitalise the names of my pokémon.

I always nickname them. Naming your characters is probably my favorite part of any RPG. Too bad modern RPG's aren't giving you that option as much anymore.

It honestly feels very American. The themes of freedom, liberty and independence play big roles in the game, and we all know the locales were modeled after NYC.

In pearl i named all mine after norse mythology. Gyrados was nidhoggr. Grass starter was Yggdrasil. And there was more but i forget most of them. I like themes :D Im not sure if i will in black/white.

I nickname my main party. Usually just something nickname-ish (Volt for Jolteon), but occasionally I'd use foreign names if they sound cool (Aquana for Vaporeon), or some other general theme (Zodiac signs or something).

It feels far more serious than DPPt just as a heads up, but for a general theme, besides America, I'd say it's technology and modern stuff in general. There's a much harsher nature/technology clash than in past Pokemon games, which I love.

In general, I don't nickname my pokemon. I do name teams once I have one, generally around some sort of theme. I put together a sandstorm team in heart gold where all of the members are named after minerals or gems, and had an -eon team in Diamond, although I don't remember the theme used that time. (It also wasn't terribly effective, but I didn't know about putting together an effective team yet.)

Nicknames for the win. I started nicknaming my Pokémon about half way through 4th gen (didn't nickname in Pearl, but did in LeafGreen which I got afterwards), and have never looked back. I don't use specific themes for teams (though I did name last year's VGC team after friends); on each of my in-game playthroughs, I try to use a certain style, though. For example, in my first Platinum playthrough, I named my team using names similar to their Japanese names - Infernape (Goukazaru) I named Zara, Gliscor (Glion) I named Leon, and so forth.

Started nicknaming in the 3rd gen. I normally nickname any Pokemon I use in my battle party (which normally is quite a few, as I have a very dynamic party over the course of the game).

Most of my names I try to make punny or clever, though sometimes they just end up incredibly stupid.

I didn't nickname pokemon until HeartGold where I nicknamed all pokemon I came across and it was a chore.
This time I'll only nickname pokemon I think I'll use.

Anyone else proper case? Frustrating that all creature names still default to UPPERCASE. Is this changed in B/W?

Edit - Looking through my HG team, I wasn't terribly creative in the nicknaming area:

FERALIGATR -> Dile
MIGHTYENA -> Shadow
TYRANITAR -> Tar
DRAGONITE -> Gong
RAIKOU -> Raikou
CROBAT -> Dracules

There are some better ones in the PC, including: Laredo, Chimney, Charboka (which is how Arbok always cried its name in the anime :P), Alpha and Kindle, Hook and Hack, Dia, Boney...

My favorite will always be Kenya, though. :lol

Edit 2 - Storm's coming. Gotta go duck and cover now. :(

Another 'Type' question, sorry guys...

So what would be a good variety of types to make up a 6 Pokemon team. A team that covers all bases in regards to type effectiveness.

I will go with the fire starter for reference, so that base will be covered.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, names are propper-cased now.

Btw, we have some information about GAME in Spain already having the games in their central warehouse so we will probably be able to get it as soon as tomorrow.

Ice, Dragon, Electric, Psychic, and Rock are the best offensive types, but I guess you could just teach moves of those types to your Pokemon. Dunno what the best defensive types are...

You forgot the two most important offensive types: Fighting and Ground. And Psychic isn't really a good offensive type anymore.

EDIT:

Remember the London B/W launch event I mentioned a while back? apparently I'm getting a free copy just for attending.

[/shamelessboast]

Fire is a pretty good offensive type, but not a good defensive one. Water is pretty good too.

I never nickname my Pokemon but for Platinum I did.

Empoleon -> Pingu
Togekiss -> EggBomber
Gliscor -> Fangtastic
Luxray -> ThunderCat
Garchomp -> unchanged

In Gen 4 I started nicknaming my main team members, and I think I did pretty well. I don't really have a theme with nicknaming, I just go with what I think works best and sounds cool.

Starmie: Tidal Rush
Pidgeot: Trix
Garchomp: Ruthless
Heracross: Stiletto
Gyarados: Cherry Red
Honchkrow: Dusty
Drifblim: Drifter
Skarmory: Feathers
Empoleon: Shivers
Togekiss: Togekey
Typhlosion: Unbeatable

I always nickname my Pokemon...I don't use a theme or anything. Instead, I always give them human names based off the first letter of the form I caught them in...so, like, in Diamond for example my team was Harry the Hippowdon, Maggie the Honchkrow, Celia the Carnivine, Craig the Toxicroak, and Sally the Spiritomb...for Piplup I made an exception and went with Napoleon, but that's because the name just works. But usually I just think of a name and go with it...

Yeah, apart from Steel and Poison there aren't any bad offensive types, it's just that Fighting and Ground are really powerful, especially against the most common defensive types.

My pokémon nicknames (none of them are very good...):
Empoleon -> Enpen
Jolteon -> Sparky
Heracross -> Antaeus
Gliscor -> Grounded
Cresselia -> Serenity (this was long before I first watched Firefly)
Metagross -> Magneto
Bronzong -> Zong
Alakazam -> Ponder
Weavile -> Reaper
PorygonZ -> Mode-7
Gallade -> Blade
Gyarados -> Hydrarchos
Kingdra -> Tethys
Ludicolo -> Tortilla
Swellow -> Gutsy
Starmie -> Star
Gengar -> Spectre
Absol -> Sol
Rhyperior -> Rhyper

Anyone who doesn't nickname their Slowpoke "Kotaku" is dead to me.

Aside from that, I tend to stick with default names (the ALL CAPS doesn't even bug me) unless I'm doing a theme run.

I started nicknaming Pokemon around the 4th generation, with names like

Garchomp -> Tarzan Boy (then I found out it was Female)
Empoleon -> Tarik Nu
Togekiss -> Happinian
Gyarados -> Delfineon
Ludicolo -> DDR Duck
Floatzel -> Tubular

And others.

Definitely going to put Afro Bull on my team, and nickname him as such.
I'm not sure about the rest.

I never nickname, it's impossible to learn their names if you don't go with the defaults.

So is Unova roughly the same size as Sinnoh?

I do, but only the Pokemon I think I'll use a lot and I try and do (lame) puns. So Ho-oh becomes Uh-oh, Torterra becomes Turtzilla etc

So whats up with these hidden abilities? How do I unlock them? Do I get two abilities in battle if I do unlock it or is there a way to select which ability I want to use?

Asking because I want to use Gothitelle but I only like the hidden ability of Shadow Tag.

If you're referring to the new third abilities then you have to download dream world pokémon with the ability. And no pokémon can have two abilities at once.

Looks like you have to breed Goldduck to obtain him.
And Golduck is only available via the Dream World which is largely dependent upon your use of it + Nintendo.

If you haven't heard, _dementia, most of the older Pokemon aren't available in-game until after you beat the main storyline (Elite 4 + Champion). And even after that, only a select few are available outside of the Dream World feature.

Your best bet for getting a Psyduck quickly is to have a friend who has powered through the game and acquired one via Dream World or via transferring from an older Pokemon game trade you one.

Hey, guys.

I haven't played Pokemon since RBY but I've got a Pokemon Black DSi bundle and a standalone copy of White pre-ordered and I'm using my $10 credit from Amazon to get Heart Gold (My friend has Soul Silver) and I'm curious as to which other Pokemon games I should look into getting. Should I go with Diamond and Pearl, just Platinum, all three, or none?

I remember nicknaming my Bulbasaur "Bub" in my first runthrough of Blue. He was rocking Vine Whip, Razor Leaf, Solar Beam and Cut. Ah, the memories. I also think I nicknamed my Blaziken as Blazing Ken because I thought it sounded funny.

Oh God, the wait is unbearable. I won't be able to play it on my DSi because (of course) my DSi is Australian and my copy of the game will be US-region. I'm having to wait until my 3DS arrives from the US.

If you're interested in the fourth gen (D/P/Pt), just going with Platinum is fine. It's the best version of those three.

Aren't they region-free unless they have DSi specific features, which I didn't think this game had?
