Pokémon GO announced (2016, iOS and Android, co-developed with Niantic [Ingress])

See, if it somehow worked exactly like the trailer, I'd be hype as hell for this, but the reality is so much lamer.

Well, we could say the same thing for the actual Pokémon games on Nintendo portables. If they somehow worked out as in the show etc..

Yet, the games are very abstract collecting/role playing games with turn based and often random combat encounters, while the show fills in the gaps with narration to create a more or less "realistic" fictional world out of the concept. Not too dissimilar to the trailer. ;-)

The abstract concepts from the trailer however are more or less tested/appealing already:
- geocaching (catching Pokémon)
- training of a Pokémon team (at least the trailer implies that to me, as it's Pokemon)
- trading/battling with other player (tons of other mobile/browser games based on that concept)
- time limited collaborative events (Mewtwu appearing at a location, must be beaten by players apparently)

This is an excellent post.

Ingress events can be pretty big. The Mewtwo part at the end gives me hope that this will be just as big

True, there are cool things about it, I'm not denying that, but the fact it won't be like the trailer shows is just sad.

Also, games came before the anime so it's illogical to make that complaint about the games ;)

The Mewtwo part had me wondering if the bigger events would be like a raid boss almost. Where the boss pokemon has insane health and everyone is using their best on it it wittle it down.

I think such things were already used in mobile games. I don't play them much, but for example Valkyrie Crusade has Archwitch system. That's basically raid boss, yeah. So I think TPC is implementing something similar as well.

Lmfao! I actually am disappointed too! I expected something a little more revolutionary from Nintendo! Even if it's on mobile!

This isn't Nintendo's mobile game. This was a deal between a US startup and the Pokemon Company that would release next year, with Nintendo staff heading the development the accompaning peripheral.

The actual Nintendo mobile game is set to RELEASE this Fall.

Holy fuck, Pokemon AR.
With catching
Trading
Battling
Raid style boss battles?

Give it to me now. How are people not more excited?

Awesome then. I look forward to that.

Yup I'm sold, the social aspect of Go alone is going to be fucking insane. Large events filled with players conversing and battling on their phones and 3DSs for a while until a huge real-world event starts, theater releases of the movies in Japan culminating not with a digital distribution, but a legendary for all to fight before or after the movie.

This thing could be absolutely huge.

Some thoughts:

- I love that there is a physical component to it other than the phone. I don't want to walk around and always look at my phone. That's not fun and bad for the battery life.

- Isn't it interesting how almost all of the people in this trailer are grown-ups or at least teens? The only kid in there plays the game with her father. Is that the Pokémon Company acknowledging that their initial fan base has grown up now or do they want Pokémon in general to appeal to a more mature audience with this?

- The trailer itself is very slick and not really "Nintendo-like", if that makes sense.

- Wondering if there's NNID connectivity so you could connect it to the next Pokémon game on NX.

- So what are they gonna do with all that GPS data? Sell it to a service like Google Maps?

The same complaint can be levelled at many CGI trailers. They're often enough overdone, but still show elements present in the game's mechanics more or less accurately.

"Sorry boss I gotta head out for a few minutes to battle with Mewtwo."
A friend of mine was called into his boss' office some time ago and wondered what that was about. All his boss wanted, was my friend's tablet to do something in Ingress. A lot of people in that company were (or still are? idk) pretty much on an Ingress trip.

One last edit:

Haven't people been clamouring for a Pokemon MMO? This is probably the closest we'll get. ;-)

Just wasted 20mins watching Ingress videos, I still don't get how this is a "clone" just because it has the same loose idea?
Like saying Eve Online is a World of Warcraft clone.

It looks pretty fun, I like how she got into a random real time battle without noticing in the video.

I'm talking about those tiny bits of the game itself they shown in the trailer and that is on the horuhe's picture as well:

Yeah that's just the model in a real world setting. The 3D models in the main games are that quality, that's why it struggles at times

Hm? Doesn't look like a real world to me.Too cartoony and saturated. More like well-rendered 3D background. I don't think they'll go with AR for this game despite what was shown in the trailer. They'll probably use GPS data to determine where you are (forest area, seaside etc) and render surroundings based on that. But I'll probably wrong :) Maybe they'll still go for AR, those games on the 3DS probably weren't for nothing.
