Pokemon X and Y, 7 months later

Loved it. My favorite Pokemon games so far. It has it's problems (lack of postgame, frame rate could be better, etc.), but damn, everything else about the game from the 3D graphics, the music, the changes to the metagame, variety in wild Pokemon, and many more things for me. Really really hope I see a Pokemon Z (or X2/Y2 or whatever) in the future; XY was close to being the "perfect" Pokemon game for me.

What's wrong with Lumiose City?

It's incredibly confusing to navigate because of the lack of a fixed camera and repetitive textures. They need to give the option to swap between cool camera angles and a fixed placed overhead camera really badly in future games. There's some locations in X and Y that were really, really hurt by this lack of options. Especially Lumiose City and Azure Bay.

Things I liked:
Technically better systems and battling methods
Freedom of movement on grid worked pretty well
3D Pokémon models
Poison being super effective against Fairy (the only thing I really asked for of Gen. 6)
Exp. All meaning no real grinding
The Grass starter's final evolution

Things I didn't like:
France/European theme
City/non-battling stuff
The characters and NPC interactions
Too many Pokémon around
The moe artstyle
3D overworld graphics
Exp. All making it not a challenge
Music (sounded like off copycat of older music)

Things I didn't care about:
Catching more Pokémon (too many to care about)
The story
Playing the game (feels like the same game I've already played so many times)

I stopped playing after Lumiose City and just gave the game and 3DS to a friend. I don't think I'm really into Pokémon anymore.

I maaaybe would get Omega Ruby. Gen. 3 rocked.

I loved it. Pangoro and Tyrantrum are now among my favorite Pokemon. The graphical update was great, and I loved traversing the world. I also liked a lot of the new Water Pokemon, which is always a plus because Water is my favorite type.

Disappointing/underwhelming in terms of music, graphics, performance difficulty, amount of new Pokemon, story, implementation of things (i.e. Fairy-type, ride-able Pokemon, sky battles), and the biggest offender of them all, lack of post-game content (hoping Z can surpass it by a large margin). EDIT: Lumiose sucked big time. And so did the rivals. The only rivals I didn't like at all and thought had no redeeming value.

It made good strides in online connectivity. Mega evolution is a very interesting mechanic. They made getting into competitive Pokemon much easier. Battles look good (outside of all of that aliasing). The general speed of the game is good (its pacing is not that great at some parts, but is good for the most part). The interface is all fluid and fast. Pokemon-Amie is a great new feature. Small touches like being able to have Pokemon bred on to the mother's Poke Ball is really cool. The Pokemon variety is great (though you can easily miss out on any new Pokemon).

Has some good stuff, but the negatives outweigh the positives for me.

Probably one of my least favourite generations. Kalos is uninteresting and has the worst Pokemon designs since gen 3. The story was garbage, which was a shame after B/W.

However, I appreciate the 3D graphics and improved breeding system. I'm glad that I'm not cheating anymore.

- Pacing issues.
- Framerate issues.
- Disappointingly easy.
- Story was a major letdown, coming from Black & White.
- Very little postgame content.
- I have a maxed out Trainer Card but I don't really feel like I accomplished anything.

BUT...

+ Fantastic gameplay enhancements (breeding is so much better now, Fairy-type is great, box management is the best so far, EVs are visible), Pokémon has never played this good.
+ WONDER TRADE!
+ I loved the Looker sidequest. Made Looker one of my favourite characters in the series. Kinda made up for the poor main story.
+ That tearjerker ending.

Still very much worth playing, but I couldn't help but feel disappointed after Black & White.

I should also note that this is the first time that I actually took a several month break in the middle of a new Pokemon playthrough. Normally, these games are my life until I at least beat the E4, but after the fifth gym I just got bored and focused on other games until Bank's free trial opened up and put me in a rush to finally beat the game.

In comparison, I played BW1 about three times before BW2 came out and I just finished a 4th playthrough of White about a month ago.

I think as an overall single player experience, they were still not on par with basically every other Gen, BUT the things they did for the gameplay in terms of balancing, enhancements and additions are fantastic, and worth playing just for that. I love the new Fairy Type, and the the new Pokemon introduced were FAR better than the abominations from Gen IV (and even some from Gen V).

So yeah, very much enjoyed.

Will probably play Omega Ruby more though.

After the hype died down I realized it was a very mediocre game.

The additions to the metagame, making it easier to competitively train, and the PSS making it feel like the game was always alive and making it easier than ever to battle and trade were huge pluses however.

- Story was a let-down after BW/BW2's surprisingly good saga.
- Rivals sucked.

Yup, the two biggest flaws for me. I stopped playing Pokemon after Ruby/Sapphire, picked it up again with Black/White but only really got into the game again with Black2/White2 (which was super fun!). So I was actually pretty hyped for XY and felt super let down. Worst rivals ever, they were so bland I couldn't even hate them (stuck to rolling my eyes and sighing whenever they appeared). At least the Pokemon designs were a little better than BW, although I haven't really liked Pokemon designs since Ruby/Sapphire.

I had more fun with the dressing up and photo taking than I thought I would though.

An amazing step in the right direction, but after 350 hours I got burned out on the game. Im hoping alpha sapphire rekindles the fire.

I had a blast engaging in the x and y community though, battling with people almost every night for 3-4 months straight.

Also, my Pinsir is probably sad that I left him (Mega Pinsir ftw).

The campaign and story itself were straight up bad. The characters were all really, really terrible (the worst rivals in the series by a wide fuckin margin, there is no contest). A stark lack of content after completion. The worst soundtrack in a Pokemon game by far. Lack of 3D outside of battles was such a bummer too.

But, the sheer amount of Pokemon available in Kalos to build a team out of, the improvements made to gameplay mechanics, the Fairy type, Friend Safaris, all the online features, a majority of the new Pokemon introduced, the region itself, being able to customise your character, Super Training and Pokemonamie... I thought that, as far as new mechanics go, XY did a great job. It's just a damn shame the actual campaign was so lousy, because it brings the whole experience down for me.

I have high hopes that the third version will at least fix the post game issues and maybe beef up the story some more.

-Music was good, but still a noticeable step back from B/W/2
-Lumiose was terribly annoying
-Most routes seemed small
-Ridiculously noticeable frame rate chugging in certain battle scenarios
-Story was an incredible letdown after B/W going out of it's way to switch things up
-Least amount of post-game since gen III

Definitely still enjoyed them, but I had my issues. I'm sure OR/AS and whatever 3rd version they come out with will tidy things up, but when I compare X/Y to B/W as first gen entries, there's such a big divide. Maybe X/Y and D/P is a more fair comparison, but even then I'd still say D/P did a better job of introducing their generation.

Great European theme. Music was a pleasure to listen to. Pokemon models were BEAUTIFUL. EXP share allowed me to really experiment with different Pokemon, as opposed to sticking to the same 6 the whole game. I enjoyed a lot of the aesthetics in towns and even routes.

That said, the game is far too short. It also takes its plot too seriously with the Team Flare (especially the leader) near the end. I enjoyed it most when Team Flare was a silly bunch of flamboyant jokers, but when they got into the whole mythos stuff, it was like BW again in that the plot's difficult to take seriously. Pokemon really was made for a more whimsical experience, so I wish the writers wouldn't be so dramatic.

Also, I'm still waiting for my jerk-ass rival again. :/ I don't want buddies, Gamefreak!

Game needs a better mechanic than EXP Share. With it on, it's too easy, with it off, it's frustrating. Wish the trainers were a bit smarter and had better Pokemon too.

Lack of post game content killed it for me. They added a lot of great features though like player customization, more accessible EV training, and EXP All (though they should have adjusted the difficulty for it).

Yeah Nub, you were a legend in those parts for the breeding months I spent afterwards. Thanks for all your contributions while I was playing after the main game. The amazing community really helped give the game longevity for me past its brief prime.

As for the upcoming titles: Bluntly, I really dislike Gen III, always have. But with modern improvements and mistakes (hopefully) learned from Pokemon X/Y's first steps, perhaps GameFreak can make it worth my while this time around.

I maaaybe would get Omega Ruby. Gen. 3 rocked.

I know what you mean, but that's a hilarious criticism of a Pokemon game.

It felt like a half-step evolution of what I think the series needs. But all the added internet and poke-care features were great.

I really liked it for the most part, but it was too easy. The new Exp All is overpowered. Even my HM Pokémon that I never used in battle ended up being overleveled by the time I got to the Elite Four.

A third version with tweaked difficulty and more post game would be fantastic.

I enjoyed it.

This is going to sound silly though, but the story sucked.

I can agree with that. 5 years ago I wouldn't have cared if a Pokémon game's story was bad, but I liked B/W's story and after that X/Y's didn't stack up.

It's a good game, but it's still kind of disappointing. Here are my problems with it:

  • The game is really easy.
  • The story is kind of lame, but it's a Pokemon game so I don't really care.
  • The graphics outside of battles aren't that great.
  • The framerate is really bad.
  • The game lacks 3D in most places, but I don't use 3D that much so this isn't a big deal to me.
  • The Streetpass functionality could have been great but they totally dropped the ball. This is my biggest disappointment.
  • The PSS interface is really weird. I can't believe they put annoying pop-ups in the game.
  • Sky battles and horde battles aren't fun.
  • Super Training isn't very fun either.
  • Not that many new Pokemon, although I skipped the previous gen so there were still a good amount of new Pokemon for me.
That said, I still had fun with it. Since they're not gonna fix any of these things in a patch, I guess I'll have to wait and see if they fix this stuff in the eventual Pokemon Z or whatever they call it.

still look at it as a transition game. liked it overall, but the postgame lacked in comparison to previous ones

I loved the game early on. The large gap in doing stuff between the first and second gyms was very cool. But after that its just like boomboomboom and then you're at the league. Some of the other gym leaders that really didn't factor much into the plot kind of felt forgettable. That old man dude that was the grass gym leader was totally awesome.

Overall, the game was really fun. The online features being right there on the bottom screen was great, and Wonder Trade is a great feature I hope to see return. (and i hope limiting the ability of trading out things like Event mons with special ribbons is removed)

I think my absolute biggest gripes with the game is the Streetpass and Miiverse. First of all, there's absolutely no excuse to not have Miiverse integration as far as posting images from the games go. That's something I'd expect a third party game to have, not a Pokemon game, let alone a game from Nintendo's second biggest franchise. Plus, you can already take pictures in the game..why can't we post them? Speaking of which, It would have been nice to have random trainer's Miiverse posts appear in the bottom screen at points too. Keep the "Passerby" and have their posts pop up so you can read. If pictures were there, that's even better.

As for Streetpass, it feels like it wasn't even given that much thought. You get Pokemiles when you pass someone, but..how often would you pass someone from a different region than you? How would you EVER get more than 1 per person unless you went to a con or something? I mean, even in Japan I can't see that you'd get someone from some other region. Pokebank at least kind of rectified this with the ability to get BP from moving mons around, and that would have been acceptable to the one Pokemile I get whenever I pass someone. Pfft, I can get 100 Pokemiles in a few minutes by Wonder Trading!

Hopefully ORAS will have fix these problems; give us Miiverse integration and do something cool with Streetpassing. I figured in XY, they should have had a "Streetpass" box where you could deposit 10 Pokemon and trade them with people who also have mons in there. Otherwise..I dunno you could get a present or something from them; a berry, an item, a decoration for Amie, etc.

With ORAS (hopefully) bringing back Secret Bases, it'd be a wasted opportunity to not have them integrated into Streetpassing; Pass by someone and their SB would appear in your game where you can battle them. After 10, it starts going back and rewriting over them (unless you save their base) just like in Animal Crossing.

+ Megas are cool as all hell
+ Interface changes are well implemented
+ Changes to sub mechanics like IV breeding were WONDERFUL
+ Friend Safaris
+ Customizable trainers is seriously fun/engrossing
+ Online stuff/social aspects are well done
+ Fairy type is interesting

+/- Pokemon models are great but there are still a lot of weird canned animations and "lack of" animations here and there (see anything using Fury Attack or other multihit attacks); also colors are too desaturated
+/- Number of new Pokemon without counting Megas was a bit on the small side even if we got great newbies

- Main campaign is a series of "huh, now we're doing X, I guess"
- The soundtrack (with a few exceptions) is way weaker than the previous generation's offerings.
- B&W campaign and pacing emphasized the strengths of the series by playing with the idea of meeting only region specific Pokemon on the first run through; X/Y felt like it didn't have enough "new" to cover the wide area of land that was Kalos
- While YMMV, the main story in X/Y is very by the book while B&W had enough genre savviness to make a mostly by the book story line one that could still make anyone who played Pokemon up to that point get a good little dose of culture shock
- Post game is nearly non-existant unless you're a breeding fiend.

I enjoy X/Y a lot overall personally, but it has small hitches here and there that make my next fondest and most recent played Pokemon before it (the Unova games) challenge it fairly regularly.

Well it's fun to go through once. After that I think it becomes very boring if you don't want to play competitive multiplayer.

The game does improve some things, such as graphics and online infrastructure. Both of which were sorely needed. However I think it's dissapointing how poorly the game performs, it's not a visual stunner in any way, yet 3d is not available in most of the game, and in the places that it is available it sharply cuts framerate, which is pretty pathetic tbh.

While X/Y does improve in some areas like I said. It's also still like previous pokemon games to a ridiculous degree. The world is still designed around the old movement system of "up" "down" "left" "right", with only a few areas taking simplistic advantage of what a 3d engine offers. So while you can move your character more freely now, they're still running around in a world primarily build up for the old movement system

The progression through the game is also still like it's always been. You're a 10 year old kid starting out on your pokemon journey, you get the unsurprising choice of 3 different starter pokemon of the usual 3 types. You then go into the tutorial stage, where you get explained the same basic stuff that you've had to get explained the last 5 pokemon games as well. And then off on your journey to collect the 8 badges, while fighting the generic team evil of whatever region you're in this time. Then go beat the elite 4 and champion.

I've also given up hope that we're ever gonna see any kind of significat changes to the combat. Gamefreak are gonna stick with the combat system they designed to work on a gameboy, because fans have convinced themselves that turn based combat with pokemon who don't have the mental capacity to remember more than 4 moves at a time is clearly the only way pokemon could ever have a good combat system

There's plenty of other stuff in the game that have a similar lack of change. I don't understand how the hardcore and long time fans of the series seem to accept and defend the incredible lack of innovation and creativity on display in this series. Personally I want to see an amazing pokemon rpg on a home console. Let gamefreak stick to making the handheld games, that a lot of people obviously want to play. But let another team thats bigger, better and more innovative take a shot at a pokemon rpg on a home console.

I finally got this two weeks ago and I am so damn addicted. To note, my last played Pokemon game was Black and White when the 3DS launched (which I subsequently sold a week later for profit as I found no use at the time for it), so it has been awhile since I've played a Pokemon game but this feels like a huge step in the right direction.

Biggest changes is obviously 3D, it is just so damn awesome seeing the Pokemon I've come to love in actual 3D instead of sprites, was just mind blowing and still is after playing it straight for two weeks. Another big change is the UI, it just feels far more responsive and has a lot of little features that really fixed some of the more clunkier past UI. Being able to use a last used item is just great, and also being able to restore Pokemon directly through a button is just great.

Other changes include the camera angle changes when healing Pokemon at a Center which was so cool, the main city and how vibrant and full it was, berries being tweaked to be far more interesting, items held changes, Pokemon now have buffs or debuffs while in battle and just a whole heap more that I can't think off the top of my head.

I haven't given multiplayer a good whack, but what I did try was a lot of fun. I actually played the multiplayer before I even purchased it for my 2DS and that's what really hooked me into purchasing it. Was a lot of fun, and being able to link up via Internet was really cool. Also liked the Streetpass implementation, very cool.

Overall Pokemon X (and Y) has been a lot of fun. I can't put it down and its even stopped me logging onto Animal Crossing (my poor, poor village). I just want to keep going that one step further.

A major letdown in terms of everything but the new engine / 3D environment, and Fairy type.

Most of the new Pokemon are really badly designed, the region was a pain to traverse and lacked interesting environments, the story (which is always weak in Pokemon games, I know) was almost nonexistent, megas are largely awful, there was no post game, and they were the easiest games in the series.

But for those who just get the games to battle online, I suppose they serve their purpose.

7 months? Geez. I just remember it being March of last year and I was deciding to buy a 3DS for this.

Thought it was the best mainline game (not counting the remakes or 3rd versions) since Gen 3. Had a lot more personality and the pokemon designs for the most part were pretty great. Loved the Pokemon variety since I always disliked having a small selection of Pokemon in prior titles. The streamlined process was also pretty good. With the variety and exp share, I was able to raise nearly an entire box of Pokemon throughout my journey which was nice. Lack of postgame really hurt the game though but thats pretty typical for most of the titles at the start of each gen.

The newly 3D designed Pokemon look really nice. Amie was a nice addition and I hope it becomes a mainstay for the series. Character customization was very much welcomed as well and I want it to be further expanded upon in terms of options and variety available.

Literally just sitting down at the computer after beating the elite 4. It's the first pokemon game I've played since the OG titles. I was surprised by how much... hasn't changed...

Obviously I liked it. I beat it and will probably still put a good amount of time into it (from what I hear there's not much post game... but battling my friends will keep me interested for a while). But honestly I wonder why I like it at all. Almost everything about the game is tedious as hell, even just normal battles loading up or opening your bag to heal a pokemon feels like it takes way too long, especially when you have to do it over and over. There's no way to speed up battle animations and even turning them off doesnt realy speed it up that much.

Then the story isn't really existent except for like a small percent of the game and even then it doesn't really make sense.

Ugh, I don't mean to sound like I'm crapping on the game, like I said, I like it, but I'm sort of baffled that after how many years after the original, the game is mostly the same. There's obviously a bunch of new things introduced but they're hit or miss.

Well anyway, that's my rambling two cents.

Okay this felt way too negative, I decided to add things I liked about the game. Graphics! Everything just looks super clean. When the animations are turned on, they're very nice. Also, the online stuff actually blew me away. I'm so used to Nintendo games having absolute barebones online. THe mega evolutions were a pretty neat idea and there were some cool designs like Gengar (but again, with the animations taking so long I rarely ever use them outside of online battles). Music was also pretty good for the most part.

Definitely a step in the right direction. Destiny knot, females passing down egg moves and pokeballs, friend safari and hordes for HA, they made breeding so much easier. And EV training with hordes too, it's great. I've been playing since the release day and I still breed something new every now and then.
The PSS is also very nice. It's cool to see other players around and what they are doing.

- B&W campaign and pacing emphasized the strengths of the series by playing with the idea of meeting only region specific Pokemon on the first run through; X/Y felt like it didn't have enough "new" to cover the wide area of land that was Kalos

Now see, I have this as a huge positive for X/Y. I found Black/White so foreign they didn't even feel like Pokemon games and I couldn't bring myself to even get half way through them I was so bored. I just did not like not knowing any Pokemon at all, it felt like I was playing an off brand game or something.

The campaign in every Pokemon game is an easy, boring grind. Let's be honest. I'm playing through Platinum now for the first time and I'd rather be hatching eggs and battling in X/Y.

Not sure why those who aren't into breeding/competitive are still playing the series.

+ I really liked the new poke designs, there wasn't a real BAD one.

+ Fast combat

+ Better typing balance (although Bug and Ice got kinda shafted)

+ Good music

+ Character customizing

+ At will PvP and trading

+ Streamlined breeding and EV training that wasn't just raw gamer bribery

+ Megalutions help some forgotten Pokes (Banette, Ampharos) be forces again.

- Megalutions make other high tier Pokes FUCKING MONSTERS that didn't need the boost

- No endgame compared to Gen V

- Relatively uninteresting world

- Insultingly easy, nothing puts up a fight (especially with your 3+ Mega team)

- massive chug in frame rates when alots going on in battle

Was good enough for 3rd in my GOTY, but 1-6 was extremely tight.

Makes the past games nearly unplayable. Some aspects need work, technical in nature mostly, buy I never want to go back to the 2D games after this. My biggest issues were missing 3D, movement feeling a little finicky, and framerate drops, but I imagine they'll all be fixed with the Gen 3 remakes anyway. Also Lumiose City sucked. But besides that, it had good music, art, and environmental design, fun gyms, and the actual battling is by far the most fun it's ever been.

Complaints about lacking content are fair, but the vast improvements to battling and trading online are enough of a post game for me, honestly. Not even upset about the Wifi shutting down now.

Sort of invalidates the console Pokémon battle simulators too, which is cool because they always felt silly to me anyway.

Edit: Also need to shout-out to the characted customization (long time coming) and streamlining of menus. The bag isn't 47 compartments with 89 useless touchscreen apps anymore! Huzzah!

First Pokemon game that I started playing and never finished, something was just off about it. Really wished you could take the rollerblades off for one (sorry if I'm wrong and you actually could). The story was much weaker than black and white, which I thought was really compelling for a Pokemon game. Hopefully omega ruby and alpha sapphire fix the performance issues.
