Pokemon X and Y, 7 months later

I liked the game, but it could have used more endgame stuff. I was hoping something would be discovered when the Pokebank allowed for old Pokemon to be brought in, but I never saw anything.

I still get lost in Lumiose City. I really don't like that place. The controls in there are so bad and everything looks the same.

It's a masterpiece. The best Pokemon by far.

But people need to understand that Pokemon is no longer a singleplayer series: it's all about multiplayer now.

First Pokemon game that I started playing and never finished, something was just off about it. Really wished you could take the rollerblades off for one (sorry if I'm wrong and you actually could). The story was much weaker than black and white, which I thought was really compelling for a Pokemon game. Hopefully omega ruby and alpha sapphire fix the performance issues.
You could use the dpad and walk around just fine.

First Pokemon I ever played--played --despite being 35. I just was never that interested in the series, but took a chance on it since I was running out of stuff to play on 3DS.

I liked it alright. I'm that that much into collecting things, so the "gotta catch them all" thing didn't bite me too hard. Think I caught 300 some when I finished. Also not into online stuff so didn't do any battles.

The campaign was ok, but I'd rather play more story driven RPGs. So I doubt I'll buy any future entries. I can see the appeal for the collector types and those who play online for sure though.

Now see, I have this as a huge positive for X/Y. I found Black/White so foreign they didn't even feel like Pokemon games and I couldn't bring myself to even get half way through them I was so bored. I just did not like not knowing any Pokemon at all, it felt like I was playing an off brand game or something.

That was point. BW was meant to put old players in the same situation that they were in back when they played their first Pokemon game. I personally loved it. It was really interested what a modern Pokemon game would be like if GF had to run off a clean slate for the entire roster of a new region. As I've mentioned in an earlier post, I've replayed BW a bunch of times because of how much replay value the Unova Dex had.

It's a masterpiece. The best Pokemon by far.

But people need to understand that Pokemon is no longer a singleplayer series: it's all about multiplayer now.

It always been multiplayer. I don't that's a good excuse for XY's bland SP.

I enjoyed it after skipping the past few gens (Ruby/Sapphire the last), but haven't finished either game.

Issues were:

  • Story was sort of nonsenical and disappointing in comparison to the rest of the game
  • The minigames. I like that I can make my Pokemon more effective in game, but the games are time consuming, repetitive, and too much trouble given what they're worth.
  • Same goes for the Training minigames. I'm also not big on the meta games. I enjoy strategy and complex systems, but it felt rather odd for these games. I understand it's better than the odd, luck systems of the past, but it just feels like a facet of the game that needs to evolve past what it is or turn into something else.

I'll likely revisit it once I start moving through back logs.

Not great.

Only a handful of new Pokemon mixed in with a ton that I've caught before in multiple games. Terrible story. Ugly, pixelated graphics, and dull art style. Only the battles were 3D, but it screwed the frame rate.

Everything about it felt cobbled together and rushed, and lacking the usual Nintendo polish.

First generation where I finally felt like I was getting tired of Pokemon. So easy, awful "friends"/"rival(s)", boring selection of Pokemon, bland art style, mediocre soundtrack, disgusting post-game, Lumiose City in general, awful attempt at a touching story ...

Just a massive, massive letdown, especially after Black and White, which I immediately adored and actually made me feel the opposite way and think "How could I ever get tired of Pokemon!!!????"

Thank God for Omega Ruby/whatever Sapphire.

I enjoyed them. I will say I enjoy the Destiny Knot and have actually gotten into breeding competitive Pokemon this time around. I've actually found shinies in the wild (after getting the shiny charm) and my first shiny ever came from breeding (just testing out the Destiny Knot) a Fennekin. Got me all excited and much more into breeding shinies this generation too.

My problem though is I don't trade with random folks this generation like I did in Black. Removing of the symbols (smiley face, sad face, etc) really just made that whole affair a much more frustrating process. I shouldn't have to set a box aside and name Pokemon with phrases (assuming person on other side can even read the language you speak) to get points across. I hope Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby fix that back to last gen.

Edit: Should note due to breeding changes, it's made it my most played generation ever. I own US X and Y and a JPN copy of X. I am nearing cap time in my US copy of X.

XY got a lot right (pokemon designs, diversity in the overworld, number of pokemon obtainable in the main game, trainer designs, huge metagame/breeding fixes), but also failed to bring in many of amazing innovations seen in BW2, such as difficulty levels, a huge expansive postgame, a much improved story, etc etc. It also did a shitty job handling the enemy team; at first I felt Team Flare was funny, but their style gimmick never evolved beyond that--a gimmick.

Their admins were faceless goons and their scientists had no explanation to who they were. Lysandre was a good character but the actual story was awful and 50% of all Team Flare stuff in the game was shoved into a single portion near the end. Also, AZ seemed to have no reason to exist and Malva being part of Team Flare was never explained aside from one mention in the dialogue.

However, despite all this I'm not worried for the rest of gen 6, as the first game of a generation is always the weakest and always lacking in content. I'm sure ORAS and Z will be leagues ahead of XY.

X was my first pokemon game since Crystal.

Was a little disappointed that you cant go explore the other regions like how Crystal did it. Besides that it was fantastic and I loved how easy it was to get all the pokemon. Before it was such a hassle.

I can understand that. Funnily enough, one of the biggest reasons I hate(d) on Gen 3 was for a similar feeling you experienced with Gen 5 it seems. The big difference is that R/S did some weird cherry picking to create it's Pokedex leading you to believe that all 300+ were just somewhere around the corner. The reality was that if you didn't get FR/LG you were pretty SOL if your favorites weren't in those games proper. B/W allowed you to go back to a Red/Blue era in terms of not knowing what you'd find around the corner but had enough modern things going for it to not make it feel like a complete retread.

Online was nice, it's on new hardware and online was really awesome.

Overall it was kind of week. Like a repeat of 4th gen.

The worst SP in the whole series, but fairly good MP. That's my final thoughts on it.

Probably the biggest offender of menu lag and load times. Running from a wild battle would leave you with a black screen for almost 5 seconds; extremely irritating.

Talked with a friend about it a while back, came to the conclusion that it basically feels like a free to play game that happened to cost me $45 upfront. It was not, and is not, a good game in any sense of the word but it wasn't a horrible one either; it simply exists.

Cloud Strife's list of Pros/Cons

Pros:

-Pretty as fuck
-Best starters since Gen IV
-3D was great (meaning non-sprite, not the 3D tech)
-Lots of Old Pokemon to buff up the Dex
-Champion music was dope
-Online features were great
-Friend Safari
-Super Training and Hordes for EVs
-First Pokemon game I played blind, made it a lot more enjoyable

Cons:

-Shitty frame-rate
-Only 69 new Pokemon (wtf), I've literally used almost all previous Pokemon in-game at least once so while the huge Dex was great for newcomers or returning fans to the series, it sucked for m
-Only 3 Legendaries (exclusing Mewtwo, Birdies, and events), wtf
-Gym Leader music sucked
-Shitty pacing (like two hours between Gym 1 to 2 then like 3 Gyms in a row in under an hour)
-Shitty Story (Lysandre was boring, Team Flare was boring, their goal was boring) which was especially disappointing considering Gen V's departure from the storytelling norm of simplicity
-Made me feel tired of the whole 8 Gyms Elite 4 formula, first time every I started to get sick of how a Pokemon game felt after beating it
-Please get rid of IVs
-Kalos City
-Game was SO EASY even with EXP. Share turned off.
-Rivals were boring. Dancing, MY OWN POKEMON BATTLE, and Let's Make Memories!!!!! Shoulda kept it at the Opposite Gender rival only
-Fairy type underwhelming for new additions (Florges was okay but the rest were horrible design-wise)

Weird seeing so many people angry at the large numbers of old Pokemon. I thought it was almost a return to GSC-style form on that front. The problem is that in GSC they used the fact that they already had "Generic bird", "Generic rat", "Generic bug" left over to put more interesting spins on some of those concepts (Like Hoothoot). In X & Y we still get those things with not that much unique about them. It was stupid in the other games but at least it made sense because they were replacing Pokemon you couldn't get, here's it's just lazy/a bad habit.

I only just got back into the game after a long break and just recently beat the E4 and now trying to complete my Pokedex.

Some Positives
The GTS is a major improvement. Being able to filter out most legendaries and event pokemon (though wish it did all legendaries) is a godsend to get rid of the dumb requests. Also the ability to only show trades where you have something to offer is great.

Wonder Trade is excellent for a nice surprise every now and then. Whenever I do a bunch of breeding, I trade them off and sometimes get nice surprise in return.

Mega Evolutions and Fairy Pokemon really help out the game IMO

The exp share for all team helps a lot in leveling up Pokemon, esp for the Pokedex. Does make the game slightly easier, but you can always turn it off.

Some Negatives
Sadly not as much post-game content. Really a shame, only a few areas to level up high level Pokemon.

Trying to get Zapdos/Moltres/Articuno is a huge pain in the ass to get. You have to randomly find them 10 times roaming the world before you can even catch them.. Who's bright idea was that?...

Compared to other Pokemon gens, not that many legendaries. Barely any if you exclude the Gen 1 legendaries here....

Overall, I'm really enjoying the game, hoping to finally max out the Pokedex.

Anyone who says there wasn't a post game obviously didn't play Battle Maison and get 50+ wins on all 5 types of battles.

I'm not saying that the post game was good, but it wasn't exactly easy to beat the Supers in Battle Maison. That being said, I'm looking forward to OR/AS post game way more because X/Y left me wanting more battles.

Mismagius isn't Ghost/Fairy :(

I really enjoyed the new breeding mechanics and multi battles are fun. Though I do hate the frame rate drops and how Pokemon have to stay in the air because of Sky Battles.

I liked it, but the exp share basically destroyed any challenge the game might've had. Being 10 levels ahead of a gym leader without grinding is a little disturbing.
I was under the impression that this was a optional setting that could be disabled. Am I wrong?

The exp share for all team helps a lot in leveling up Pokemon, esp for the Pokedex. Does make the game slightly easier, but you can always turn it off.
Okay, so I'm correct. How is this a complaint then? It would be like complaining Doom is too easy after I type IDKFA.

Least favourite mainline Pokémon game for me, much preferred the high quality sprite work from the previous games compared to low quality 3D models and terrible camera angles, lumiouse city obviously being the biggest offender there. Ignoring the art style/tech issues it had, gameplay wise it still felt like a step back from black/white, and the main 'hook' the game has going for it, the mega evolutions, did nothing for me personally, to the point that I'm hoping omega/alpha don't include them, however given the different look to the legendaries in the releases art, I'm not hopeful.

It's still an okay game, since it doesn't deviate too far from the formula, I'd struggle to recommend it over any other mainline Pokémon game however.

There certainly is a post-game, but it's kinda lacking. Esp as Battle Mansion doesn't reward you with experience.. Which makes the place useless for me currently as it can't help me with my Pokedex quest at all that much :(

This is how I see it. Cept the part about catching things in previous games...since Y was my first.

After finishing the league I basically dropped it completely.

-Little to no post game was incredibly disappointing.
-Megaevolutions are a concept I just hate, especially when looking at some of the pokemon that got them that really didn't need more boosts.
-Kalos as a region was boring.
-All the cafes in Luminose and most of them don't do shit.
-Not enough clothing options, but it was a good start. No iconic items like Ash's hat was a letdown.
-Not enough new pokemon, only 70 new pokemon compared to B/W 156. I found myself using a lot of the older pokemon simply because I didn't care for many of the new ones.
-If you're going to have a bunch of old pokemon at least give some of them some new evolutions then, not megas please.
-Fairy seemed to be really under-utilized in this. Only a few pure fairy pokemon, some others who were suddenly made that type but there weren't that many fairy moves.
-The story was fucking horrible, jesus christ.
-No move tutors, or none that were actually useful. Seriously getting moves only through breeding is such a tedious process, what the hell were they thinking with that shit?

This is probably my least liked mainline game. HGSS and B2W2 reign supreme for now. The one good thing we got out of all this is Hawlucha and the fact that #teamBroakie won in the end, as I always expected.

EDIT: Going to agree with the following that others have said;

-Shitty rivals.
-Really easy game, even if I did enjoy the exp.all.
-Pretty awful pacing.
-Graphics were ok, but Lumiose city was just a mess.
-Lacking in polish, the drop that happens during battles was something I was not expecting and honestly left me pretty bummed.

Another point I thought was good was the lack of legendaries. I don't know why people suddenly want to have a bunch of those things like in the previous gens when there were like 20 of them. The less there are the better, two boxart legends, the third one for the second game, a psychic or mew analogue, and a trio. That's all that is needed. Fuck Gen V had like a trio, a quartet, then three more event pokemon and a bunch of other unnecessary shit. No thank you.

Found the game to be terrible.

They made the meta game a lot easier to get into but the games are still basically the same shit. I would have been satisfied with a much faster battle system but this game couldn't even deliver on that front. Battles still feel incredibly slow unless you turn off animations. Have these guys never seen any of the 3D SMT games? Battles are quick and convey all the proper information.

The main thing that got me was how incredibly easy the campaign was. Especially after hearing about the previous games having a hard mode. Why is it these guys are always taking steps back? Also, EXP share... what the fuck where they thinking? They could have at least adjusted NPC levels too be much higher. I recall at a certain point I exchanged my entire team and still managed to outlevel the NPCs...

Megaevolutions are bull shit too... Yes, let's take this game with hundreds of unique monster and let's handicap 99% of them!

Fair point. In my case, it was simply because I used all of these Pokemon in my team. Over the past 14 or so years I've literally used every Pokemon at least once. I was hoping for Unova-like additions numeric-wise but that was probably too much to expect given the jump to 3D.

Camera in lumiose city is complete ass and so is the design of the city. Unlike other pokemon games where places are regularly apparent by view most of the shops look the same. The routes between towns also feel much smaller and the game has passable post game content. 7/10 for me

Yeah that was one of the most frustrating things for me. It was such a terrible angle I got lost any time there was a story related trigger there.

Unpolished and a broken leveling system that pretty much ruins the game. Even without using the exp share it was a joke.

It was a fun trip back into the world of pokemon, but I will not be buying another one for a long time.

Almost everything about the game is tedious as hell, even just normal battles loading up or opening your bag to heal a pokemon feels like it takes way too long, especially when you have to do it over and over. There's no way to speed up battle animations and even turning them off doesnt realy speed it up that much.

Music was also pretty good for the most part.

I find myself thinking these things as well

it's my favorite generation by far. The only thing I have to say is that, for a first-party game, you could have reviewed the slow downs. Seriously. I'm okay with 3D not being everywhere, but FGS, get a constant framerate!

Then there's minor gripes here and there. Probably just personal preferences.

Obviously I liked it. I beat it and will probably still put a good amount of time into it (from what I hear there's not much post game... but battling my friends will keep me interested for a while). But honestly I wonder why I like it at all. Almost everything about the game is tedious as hell, even just normal battles loading up or opening your bag to heal a pokemon feels like it takes way too long, especially when you have to do it over and over. There's no way to speed up battle animations and even turning them off doesnt realy speed it up that much.
It's a thing about every video games these days. Cool looking over practical use and/or gameplay. Can't go around it.

Oh yeah. No new evolutions in the stead of Mega's also pissed me off. Not like I can use more than one Mega in my party so the "but we got Megas" argument doesn't hold sway with me.

Story and world were straight up vanilla, but the other changes were all for the better.

Somehow I enjoyed it the least of all the mainline games, and it feels a bit rushed. But the foundation is good for the future

There certainly is a post-game, but it's kinda lacking. Esp as Battle Mansion doesn't reward you with experience.. Which makes the place useless for me currently as it can't help me with my Pokedex quest at all that much :(

There are other great places to train. Battle Maison is for the challenge of getting all 5 trophies. Personally, I wish BM was more like pokemon stadium/online. What I mean by this is, I wish I could go in with a team of 6 and see the opposing team of 6. Then depending on the battle type (singles, doubles, etc) choose my leads and which pokemon to bring into battle. It got annoying real fast in BM when you lead the same pokemon for 50 battles in a row. Especially since eventually you are bound to get a team that is lucky enough to have all your weaknesses. Basically it brings too much luck into the game, as if pokemon wasn't luck based enough as it is.

I liked it, but it's my least favorite and probably the worst in the series. If im being honest to myself it was quite disappointing.

Hard to believe they found a way to make the main game even easier, and maaaaaaan the performance/lack of 3D.

the MP is great and all, and it's nice to see added and better features for that, but im still a main game guy, even if just for nostalgic reasons, and that aspect was severely lacking.

Yeah Nub, you were a legend in those parts for the breeding months I spent afterwards. Thanks for all your contributions while I was playing after the main game. The amazing community really helped give the game longevity for me past its brief prime.

As for the upcoming titles: Bluntly, I really dislike Gen III, always have. But with modern improvements and mistakes (hopefully) learned from Pokemon X/Y's first steps, perhaps GameFreak can make it worth my while this time around.

(Future Alpha Sapphire owner signing out)
As you were you. I still have your perfect Beldum that you traded me when you were going for a shiny Beldum and had a bunch of spares.... I think I might take some time out tomorrow to finally level it up :P

Megaevolutions are bull shit too... Yes, let's take this game with hundreds of unique monster and let's handicap 99% of them!

That didn't happen. Mega evolutions made some pokemon actually relevant now and some mega evolutions are arguabley worse than non megas (Garchomp). Megas are not the top tier end all be all.

What I will say however is that if a pokemon doesn't have a 3 level evolution already, its kind of dumb not to just give it a true evolution. The only thing I can see is design choices coming into play. Arguably megas don't look that different from their original. Like evolving Mawile to Mega Mawile, they look pretty darn similar compared to Wartortle and Blastoise for example. And I can see how GF might want to iterate on a design instead of overhaul the design by giving it a true evolution.

While I don't take issue with mega evolutions in themselves, I'm not a huge fan that they effectively ate into the new pokemon count. Especially since mega evos were heaped onto already popular competitive pokemon (i.e. Garchomp, Lucario, Scizor, Gengar, etc) that didn't at all need any sort of buff. Ultimately I would have preferred if monsters like Pinsir, Heracross, etc got proper evolutions instead, even if that would mean we'd be without the glory of monsters like Mega Ampharos. That said, I understand the concept of mega evolutions as "adding a new dynamic" as well as the way to kinda-sorta add new pokemon without adding an "actual" new pokemon and adding to the total of monsters needed to collect, which is now admittedly over 700.

Post game content is, as many others have said, too light. And, especially with the new exp share mechanic factored in, the game's way too easy. It felt like too much has been streamlined as far as story progressed went, as well.

However, I'm overall a fan of the streamlining done at the end of the day, as the changes to breeding mechanics (on top of ones that Gen 5 introduced, as well as reusable TMs) have made breeding and raising pokemon infinitely easier. What used to take days and days to do can now be done in a single afternoon. Instead of having ~10 battle ready pokemon to use against my friends, I now have two full boxes.

And while maybe ~450 pokemon for a regional pokedex is a bit too much, I am still very happy that they went with a number significantly higher than 150. There's ~720 pokemon now, you shouldn't have to plod through five straight routes of the same three pokemon and be limited to two subpar fire pokemon for the entire pre-E4 story.

I hope with the next gen they let me fully customise my character as well as give me the ability to give my Charizard a tophat.

I was under the impression that this was a optional setting that could be disabled. Am I wrong?

Okay, so I'm correct. How is this a complaint then? It would be like complaining Doom is too easy after I type IDKFA.

Always the backwards mislogic. Typing IDKFA turns OFF god-mode here.

Bought XY 3 times.

Only Pokemon game I bought more than once for reasons that weren't "I lost the first cart I had", assuming we're counting third versions as different games.

+Great battle graphics
+Really appealing art style in the overworld
+Overworld has some nice views
+Solid level design
+Liked the angle shifts in the overworld
+So FAST - I gave up on Diamond because the game was so fucking slow. But this game... the roller blades were an excellent idea. Everything just seems so quick.
+Liked the idea of the rivals - bunch of friends proceeding through the world together, but...

-Rivals were undeveloped
-Overworld lacks 3D - this is a big one for me cause the world seemed designed specifically for 3D. So many instances of the game giving you a view of things off in the distance
-Art style in the more open areas did not hold up
-Hoard battles, sky battles were not very fun
-Team Flare: God, complete garbage. They need to stop with this "Team XXX" nonsense and tell a good story. Team Flare was so pointless, and their motivation was complete garbage. They didn't even have that large a role compared to teams of the past games.
-So easy - most trainers barely had any pokemon and were super easy to kill.
-Lumiose City was a fucking travesty.
-Main character is super ugly.

It was my first Pokemon game since Diamond, and I really enjoyed it - renewed some faith in the franchise, to be honest. But it definitely needed more work in some areas.

Fuck Lumiose.

Game was really fun but I can't really bring myself to go through the post game or replay it for whatever reason.

The best Pokémon by far. Shitty story? It was never about the story, no one ever cared about it, it's all about breeding, trading, battling etc.

The mechanics are a HUUUGE improvement over the last games. It's never been easier to build a competitive team. People miss the point about the exp share, if you think it breaks the game just turn it off, it is there exclusively to save time from grinding. It is a blessing for the ones that want to breed for egg moves.

Not counting the remakes, these are probably my favorite games in the series, albeit they do have a lot of issues. To summarize:

+ Kalos was a well designed region (although it was a geographical regression after how exotic Hoenn and Sinnoh were)
+ The newer Pokemon were all consistently good
+ The graphics were gorgeous
+ The battles moved fast
+ Mega evolutions and the new type up chart completely changed the dynamic of the game
+ The Super Training, Pokemon Amie, and Player Search System, were all great additions; the latter especially breathed new life into the series, making it a persistently connected multiplayer game
+ The music was great, although this does represent the weakest entry in the series.
+ Customization options were great
- Lumiose was a mess, as was the camera control
- The story was laughably bad, and it stuck out like a sore thumb after how good the Black/White games were
- The game was too easy. There was literally no challenge, and as a result, no sense of progression or accomplishment. This, perhaps more than anything else, hurts the game
- The level curve is completely broken, a problem compounded bythe EXP Share
- Too many technical issues- no 3D, framerate that resembles a slideshow, bugs, glitches, loading screens, you name it. This is something that needs a lot of work.
- Absolute lack of a post game kills the lasting value of the game, and is a shocking regression (why, for example, is there no Elite Four Second Challenge?)
- As mentioned above, it was the weakest soundtrack in the series.

If I had to rank the games, here is how I would do it:

  1. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver
  2. Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen
  3. Pokemon X/Y
  4. Pokemon Black/White
  5. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire
  6. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
  7. Pokemon Black 2/White 2
