Pokemon X & Y should come with a Game Boy mode

You heard me.

I played the series since Yellow, and I'll be honest, the 8-bit Pokemon era is just by far the happiest times I had with the series as well as the Stadium games.

They toyed with the idea with the Game Boy music mode in HG/SS, now take it to the next level by remaking the entire game in 8-bit, both in original and Game Boy Color, complete with their respective VC frames (don't forget the super secret original GB VC GREEN SCREEN mode by holding L & R and press Y was it?). This of course includes music and sound effects (just rip the ones in GSC).

Granted X & Y do seem to have some instances that might be difficult to replicate (if you want to make it GB authentic), like the hoard battles (just say your attacks hit each target, like Beat Up would hit your entire party?). But I can see most others translating perfectly, I could be wrong though.

Also, surely it wouldn't be expensive or time consuming would it? I mean they could probably do this now in their sleep with the tools they have today. Did they say if it was difficult to do the 8-bit music in HG/SS?

What do you think?

Nostalgia.

This sounds like a terrible waste of time and resources.

Just have the ability to have any Pokemon follow you and we'll be good Game Freak.

No. After the most innovative and iconic game in the series Sapphire I was done with anything 2D Pokemon/retro.

3D has been a long time coming. I don't want to be reminded of the old days

8bit is vile just give me orchestrated music

If you are wondering if it is objectively possible for the game to have this feature, it's not. It's only two months until the game goes gold, all the features are locked down.

If you are only throwing around the idea of a future Pokémon game having this feature, I agree it would be pretty neat. But it sounds like a technical headache.

It's not I don't like the change to 3D, I just would like them to give us an option if it's feasible. My nostalgia goggles are glued to my face. :(

Unless they created tools that draw or compose automaticaly I really doubt it would be any diferent from the old days.

With the environments as unsightly as they are in X/Y, it would make for quite the acceptable alternative. I'd switch back to 3D for battles, however.

I'm not so sure it would be entirely simple to redraw every single pokemon, town and area, as well as their respective animations.

It sounds like a little bit too much effort for something I'm not sure many people would really appreciate. It would be really cool for a while but I personally wouldn't choose 8-bit graphics over the originals.

Yeah, it's probably not too expensive or time-consuming to double the number of assets in the game.

How would making 8-bit sprites and audio be double? You're putting together full-quality 3D models and music and environments with 8-bit sprites that are for the most part quite small.

HG/SS had the GB Sounds because they knew a large portion of the people playing it wanted the nostalgic feeling of listening to the original music. They should not do anything even close to that with the new games.

What you are describing would be a massive undertaking, and would not be worth it. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it would generally be a terrible idea. Those resources could be put to making the core game better instead of providing something for nostalgia goggled players.

Sprites are vile. And Pokemon is made for 3D period. From this day forward all of them will finally be 3D and slay.

Seethe

But how is Sapphire the most iconic, and innovative, title in the series. I mean most iconic seems like it would be Red/Blue/Green/Yellow.

Edit: I would dig a chiptune soundtrack.

it'd be neat, just as a tribute to the series' heritage, but it doesn't seem worth the effort honestly.

It'd have made a lot more sense to do in Gen IV or even V, where they could've pulled it off without having to rework things in major ways.

There is literally no point. It's an utter waste of time and resources.

The GB Player was a case of using the original tracks, and arranging the handful of new pieces with the Game Boy soundfonts. This would require the reconstruction of the entire game world from top to bottom; a 3D game world at that. It simply cannot reasonably be done.

Good luck adequately representing Castelia or Lumiose with Game Boy graphics.

They actually had to re-record all the old music for some reason.

Take the nostalgia goggles off and embrace the future, I know it's scary but it is needed to make way for new things.

Changing ALL the art of the game to 4 bit would be like scrapping the whole art, and having to redo over 600 pokemon in 4 bit, towns, EVERYTHING in 4 bit, would take months and months. We are talking collision testing, graphical errors, and all that.
Wont happen.

i don't see people asking for a SM64 mode in new 3D Marios like SM3DLand, a an Arcade DK mode for the new DKC games, a SSB64 mode for SSB4 or a 8-bit mode for new Zelda games.

what makes people want ancient visuals in Pokemon games so much? no other Nintendo series seems to be in this situatiuon and most of their series are older than Pokemon.

Ha, ha! We finally get a fully polygon Pokemon, and the first thing you desire is to back to bit graphics. Fu...

Sprites are beautiful. People would love a return to older art style for games like Yoshi's Island 3DS or Link to the Past 2.

but these games you listed have predecessors that actually look good because they're games with 16-bit visuals.

what the OP wants is the equivalent of going back to SMB1, NES Zelda or NES Metroid visuals instead of the much better visuals seen in their sequels like SMW, ALttP or Super Metroid. that doesn't look any good anymore and it is a waste of resources even if it is optional.

There are people who adore the look of the 8-Bit Zelda, Marios and Metroid though. A big example of people preferring 8-Bit to 16-bit is the classic Mega Man series. I think the majority of fan opinion is that 1-6,9 and 10 look better than 7's, Forte's and 8's 16/32-bit graphics.

Personally I think G/S/C still looks great. The color choices were just so good and the sprites were great looking -- front and back. I also really like Gen V's look.

Thats all I want

I swear, Pokemon fans are just as bad as Transformers fans when it comes to nostalgia. Constantly screaming "GEN ONE" without trying any future iterations despite the fact they might be superior to the original.

You should TMNT to that too. Epically when a lot of them do not even know there was a comic book before that cartoon they latched on to.

" why are they doing that, they didn't do that in the old show they always ruin everything, trying to be new"

" its based of the comic book "

" what comic book"

All pokemon fans aren't like that though the annoying gen one hard cores are a minority to be quite honest.

They are also the kind of people that haven't played the Pokemon games in many years.

No offense but it would be totally stupid to spend millions on a mode that only the most deranged fans would ever play. 99% of the fanbase wants the series to finally move beyond the trappings of Red and Blue, not revert back to them.

I see what you're trying to say, but to be fair, people do ask for a more SM64-type Mario; 8-bit Zelda is probably just top-down Zelda, which I'm sure someone other than me has asked for; nobody asks for Smash 64 because all it was was Classic and Versus modes which are still around (and they're too busy asking for Melee 2).

Speaking on graphics alone though, yeah, something about Pokemon sprites just keeps the nostalgia flowing.

I hope people realize that I said as an option and not instead?

Exactly. This still have to redo EVERYTHING. Artists would have to work for months to change every thing in the game, for an Optional thing that 1-3% of the population will use.
Nope. Wont happen.

I'd rather them not waste development resources on something so inconsequential on the game's core gameplay, especially given how much of a jump this game is and the length of development between Black/White 2 and X/Y.
